That’s on purpose. The University of California does not use SAT or ACT scores for admission or for scholarships, so there’s no test range to report. What matters is the GPA in UC’s A-G courses. For fall 2026, UC Merced admitted about 95% of first-year applicants, and the middle half of admitted students had high school GPAs between 3.57 and 4.16.
🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at UC Merced (Read This First)
The FAFSA is the real scholarship application. Most of UC Merced’s money is need-based. Fiat Lux, Blue and Gold, the Middle Class Scholarship, Bobcat Grants, and the institutional scholarship pool all run off the FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application filed by March 2.
MAAP has an October 7 trap. Students at partner high schools have to flag MAAP inside the UC application by October 7. Wait until the November 30 UC deadline and you miss the guaranteed admission and the $3,000 a year that comes with it.
The Regents Scholarship is not automatic. Everyone admitted is considered, but only a small group is picked, and the UC personal insight essays do all the work. There’s no second chance with a separate application.
Fiat Lux is a floor, not a bonus. It guarantees at least $25,000 a year in total free money. It does not add $25,000 on top of your other grants.
Out-of-state families pay full freight. No WUE, no tuition waiver, and no nonresident merit scholarship we could find. Budget about $79,000 a year in direct costs.
Test scores won’t help. UC is test-free for fall 2027, even though UC Merced’s own apply page still shows a “Test Optional” icon. Don’t spend money on extra test dates for this school.
FAQ
Is this college test-optional? Yes, for admission. University of California, Merced is test-optional for admission.
What is the middle 50% ACT/SAT? ACT: N/A; SAT: N/A.
Average net price? About $12,744/year after aid.
Does this school use waivers/reciprocity?
No broad regional reciprocity path.

📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest University of California, Merced has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.
Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly
$800 to $2,000 more than the in-state total below.$1,600 to $4,000 more than the out-of-state total below.
In-State: billed cost per year

Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters

Out-of-State: billed cost per year

Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees
$56,294
Housing & meals (typical)
$23,180
Total billed cost
$79,474
That is $39,270 more per year than California residents pay, before any waivers or scholarships.
Average federal net price: $12,744 per year.
This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, for in-state students only, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.
Out-of-state families: this average does not include you. Run the college's own net price calculator for a number based on your situation.
The UC Tuition Lock (Tuition Stability Plan)
Here’s something most families don’t know: UC freezes systemwide tuition and student services fees for up to six years from the term your student starts. The rate you see for your entering class is the rate you’ll pay for that whole stretch. Housing, food, and campus fees can still move, but the biggest line on the bill stays put. That makes four-year budgeting at UC Merced a lot more predictable than at most public universities.
FAQ: Cost of Attendance at UC Merced
What does a year at UC Merced really cost a California family?
For students starting in 2026-27, the bill UC Merced actually sends is about $40,200 for on-campus living: $17,024 in tuition and fees, $15,154 for housing, and $8,026 for food. The official cost of attendance is $48,654 because it also counts books, transportation, personal expenses, and health insurance. Those extras aren’t billed by the school, but they’re real money.
How much more do out-of-state students pay?
Non-residents add $39,270 in Nonresident Supplemental Tuition. That brings direct costs to roughly $79,500 and the full cost of attendance to $87,924. UC Merced doesn’t take part in WUE or any regional tuition exchange and has no broad out-of-state waiver, so plan on the full number unless your student lands the Regents Scholarship or outside money.
Is there free tuition for middle-income California families?
If your family earns under $100,000 and qualifies for aid, UC’s Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan guarantees systemwide tuition and fees are covered. Plenty of websites still say $80,000, but UC Merced’s own page lists $100,000. Families above that line should still file, because the state’s Middle Class Scholarship is built for exactly that group.
Will tuition go up every year we’re there?
Not the tuition part. Under UC’s Tuition Stability Plan, systemwide tuition and fees stay flat for up to six years from when your student enrolls. Housing and food rates are set each year and can rise.
Can we skip the $2,996 health insurance charge?
Yes, if your student already has comparable coverage. Every UC student is automatically enrolled in UC SHIP and charged for it unless they submit an online waiver showing equivalent insurance. Put that on your summer to-do list, because it’s an easy $3,000 back in your pocket.
How much does living at home save?
A lot. UC Merced’s at-home budget is $36,052, compared with $48,654 on campus, mostly because housing drops from $15,154 to $3,956. For Central Valley families within driving distance, that’s about $12,600 a year. One catch: Fiat Lux Scholars must live on campus their first year.
October 7: MAAP interest must be flagged inside the UC application (partner high schools only).
November 30: UC application deadline. This is also when Regents Scholarship consideration and the institutional scholarship pool lock in.
March 2: FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application. This one date drives Fiat Lux, Blue and Gold, the Middle Class Scholarship, Cal Grant, and Bobcat Grants.
June 1: Any documents the financial aid office requests (required to keep Fiat Lux).
Parent rule of thumb: at UC Merced, March 2 matters more than any merit cutoff. Circle it now.
Automatic Merit Scholarships at UC Merced
Let’s be straight with you: UC Merced does not have a GPA-and-test-score grid where hitting a number guarantees a dollar amount. The closest thing is MAAP, which guarantees $3,000 a year to qualifying seniors at partner high schools. Beyond that, every admitted student is automatically considered for the institutional scholarship pool, but nothing is promised. The real money at UC Merced comes from need-based aid, covered further down this page.

Strategic Detail
The Middle Class Scholarship is a California state award run by the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) for UC, CSU, and community college bachelor's students whose family income and assets fall under state limits. The award is a formula: cost of attendance minus other gift aid, minus an $8,154 self-help contribution, minus a family contribution for dependent households earning over $100,000. Amounts vary widely and can be adjusted during the year.
🕵

How to Apply
By October 7 of senior year, start the UC application and complete About You, Campuses and Majors (select Merced), the High Schools page under Academic History, and Scholarships and Support Programs. If UC Merced is the only campus, do not submit; UC Merced notifies students by mid-October and completes the application for admitted students with the fee waived. If applying to other UCs or SJV PRIME+, finish and submit the full UC application by November 30.
Selection criteria: MAAP is criteria-based, not comparative — meet the academic thresholds (UC A–G + 3.0 weighted UC GPA) and submit both applications on time, and admission plus the $3,000/year scholarship are guaranteed.
💡
Strategic Detail
MAAP pairs guaranteed admission with a $3,000 per year scholarship, renewable for up to four years while the student stays eligible. It is open only to seniors graduating from about 57 partner districts and schools, mostly in the Central Valley plus partners in Sacramento, the Bay Area, and the Inland Empire. Requirements are 15 yearlong A-G courses with a weighted GPA of 3.0 or better. The guarantee does not extend to selective programs such as Fiat Lux, the University Honors Program, or SJV PRIME+.
🕵

Because colleges can change funding thresholds and deadlines at any time, always verify these details with the institution before finalizing your application strategy.
Note: SAT and ACT scores are not used for any UC Merced scholarship. MAAP uses the weighted UC GPA in A-G courses; the institutional pool uses the GPA on the UC application.
Automatic Merit FAQs (UC Merced)
Does UC Merced guarantee merit money for a certain GPA?
Only through MAAP, and only for seniors at partner high schools. Everyone else is considered for institutional scholarships based on their UC application and FAFSA, but there’s no guaranteed amount.
How does MAAP actually work?
If your student’s high school district is a MAAP partner, they indicate interest inside the UC application by October 7 of senior year. Students with 15 yearlong A-G courses and a weighted 3.0 GPA get guaranteed admission plus $3,000 a year, renewable for up to four years. If UC Merced is the only campus, UC Merced finishes the application for them and waives the fee.
Is my student’s school a MAAP partner?
The list covers about 57 districts and schools, heavy in the Central Valley (Fresno, Modesto, Merced, Visalia, Madera, Turlock, and more) with partners in Sacramento, the Bay Area, and the Inland Empire. Check the official MAAP page in the links section before October 7.
What GPA does my student need for institutional scholarships?
At least a 3.25 for most awards as an incoming student. After that, donor criteria such as major, hometown, or background decide who gets matched to which fund.
Do SAT or ACT scores help with scholarships?
No. UC does not use test scores for admission or scholarship selection for fall 2027 applicants.
Isn’t the Regents Scholarship automatic?
Everyone admitted is considered automatically, but it’s a selective award chosen on essays and achievements. We cover it in the competitive section below.
UC Merced has exactly one flagship competitive award: the Regents Scholarship. There’s no separate application, no interview, and no finalist weekend. Every admitted student is considered, and the selection committee reads the same UC application everyone submits. Translation: the four personal insight essays are your student’s scholarship essays.

Strategic Detail
Every admitted first-year and transfer student is considered, but only a small group is selected. Regents Scholars are eligible for a $7,000 annual honorarium regardless of financial need. If a scholar still has in-state need after that, UC Merced adds university scholarships and grants to cover it. Freshmen hold the award for four years (eight semesters), transfers for two. It is unique to UC Merced and does not transfer to another UC. Keeping it requires a 3.25 cumulative GPA and at least 12 units per semester.

Most winners: The top slice of the admitted class. ❓ Regents Scholarship FAQs
Is there a separate application for the Regents Scholarship?
No. Every admitted first-year and transfer student is considered automatically based on the UC application submitted by November 30.
How much is the Regents Scholarship worth?
Scholars are eligible for a $7,000 honorarium each year no matter what their family earns. If they still have in-state financial need, UC Merced adds university scholarships and grants to cover it. That makes it far more valuable for families with need.
What does the committee look for?
Grades, the quality of the UC personal insight essays, depth of activities, recommendations, leadership, hardships overcome, and distinctive personal achievements. The essays are where students can separate themselves.
When will we find out?
Regents Scholars are notified in March or April before enrollment.
What does it take to keep it?
A 3.25 cumulative GPA and at least 12 units every semester. Freshmen keep it for four years, transfers for two, with no extensions.
Can my student take it to another UC campus?
No. The UC Merced Regents Scholarship stays at UC Merced. Other campuses run their own Regents programs with different rules.
🧠 Parent Strategy: At UC Merced, Paperwork Is the Scholarship Application

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ
Can my student apply for Fiat Lux?
No, it’s invitation only. UC Merced picks first-year California residents with at least a 3.0 GPA who qualify for both Pell and Cal Grant, using the admission application and FAFSA. If an invitation arrives, it comes with a requirement to live in the Fiat Lux community on campus that first year.
We make $110,000. Is there anything for us?
Yes. You’re over the Blue and Gold line, but the state’s Middle Class Scholarship was designed for families in your range. It’s calculated by formula from your FAFSA, so the only way to know is to file by March 2.
We live in Merced. What’s the Gateway Scholarship?
Gateway is backed by a $9 million endowment and funds at least 36 incoming students a year, with preference for Merced high school graduates. The path starts early: students can connect with Gateway coordinators as early as ninth grade, so ask your high school counselor now.
Does UC offer aid for Native American students?
Yes. The Native American Opportunity Plan covers in-state systemwide tuition and fees for California residents enrolled in any federally recognized tribe, including tribes outside California. File the FAFSA or CADAA, and UC reaches out for tribal enrollment documents.
Is there ROTC at UC Merced?
Air Force ROTC only, through a crosstown agreement with Fresno State’s Detachment 035. Cadets stay full-time at UC Merced and drive to Fresno several times a week for classes and training.
Can current students still find money?
Yes. Continuing students submit the Continuing Student Scholarship Application in ScholarshipUniverse, which opens February 1. They need a 3.0 cumulative GPA, and departmental awards in that same portal favor upperclassmen with strong grades in their major.
UC Merced runs a campus-wide University Honors Program rather than a separate honors college. The big difference from most schools is timing: students apply after they’re admitted to UC Merced, not alongside the main application. There’s no minimum GPA to apply, which makes it one of the more open honors programs in the UC system.
Who can apply: Incoming first-years and transfers once they’re admitted, plus rising second- and third-year UC Merced students in the spring
When: As soon as the UC Merced admission notice arrives; applications stay open until seats fill
What’s in the application: Short responses plus one “Creative Product” of your student’s choosing
Staying in: A 3.10 cumulative UC GPA, checked every semester

Because colleges can change funding thresholds and deadlines at any time, always verify these details with the institution before finalizing your application strategy.
Honest note: the Honors Program does not come with an admission scholarship. Its money is project funding once your student is in, typically $100 to $1,000 per request for research, conferences, study abroad, or internships.
Timing Note: Honors applications for the next fall open when UC Merced admission decisions go out. There’s a priority consideration date, so have your student apply as soon as the admission email lands. Late applicants can still get in while seats remain.
What Honors Actually Gets Your Student
Priority registration: At a growing campus, getting the classes you need on time can keep a four-year plan on track.
Honors Living Learning Community: Optional, but a nice landing spot for first-years who want a built-in study group.
Dedicated advising: Honors advisors help map out research and grad school plans.
Transcript recognition: Completion is noted on the final transcript.
University Honors Program FAQs (UC Merced)
Is it an honors college?
No. It’s the University Honors Program, open to students in every major across the three schools.
Do we apply when we submit the UC application?
No. Your student applies on the Honors website after receiving the UC Merced admission notice.
Is there a GPA cutoff to apply?
No minimum GPA is required to apply. Once in, students need a 3.10 cumulative UC GPA to stay.
Does Honors mean a bigger scholarship?
Not at admission. Honors Scholars can request supplemental funding for experiences like research travel and internships, but scholarship dollars for tuition come from the Regents, MAAP, and need-based programs covered above.
Do Honors students have to live on campus?
No. The Honors Living Learning Community is an option, not a requirement.
UC Merced is the youngest campus in the University of California. It opened in 2005 and earned top-tier R1 research status in 2025, which is remarkably fast for a university. It’s also one of the most consistent national leaders in social mobility: students who receive Pell Grants graduate at rates that match or beat their classmates. If your student wants a UC degree, small-feeling research access, and a campus built for first-generation families, this is the place where all three meet.
Signature Program: SJV PRIME+ BS to MD: An eight-year path from a UC Merced bachelor’s degree straight into medical school at UCSF, with clinical training at UCSF Fresno. It’s designed to train doctors who will stay and practice in the San Joaquin Valley. Students apply as high school seniors through a supplemental application, and the full UC application has to be submitted by November 20 to get access.
Engineering and Computer Science: Strong in bioengineering, computer science, and mechanical engineering, with undergraduates pulled into faculty research early.
Environmental Science and the Sierra Nevada: Yosemite is about two hours away, and the Sierra Nevada Research Institute gives students real fieldwork on water, fire, and climate.
Biological Sciences and Public Health: A natural pre-med pipeline, and the majors that feed SJV PRIME+.
Cognitive Science: One of the campus’s standout research areas, blending psychology, computer science, and linguistics.
Management and Business Economics: Housed in the Division of Management and Information, which UC Merced is working to turn into the Ernest and Julio Gallo School of Management. That school is proposed, not yet approved.

Here’s the honest picture. UC Merced isn’t a merit-scholarship school, and it doesn’t pretend to be. What it does better than almost anyone is make a University of California degree affordable for families who need help. For California families, that means a guaranteed floor of $25,000 a year in free money through Fiat Lux, free tuition under Blue and Gold, a locked tuition rate for up to six years, and a graduation rate that doesn’t drop for lower-income students.
The game plan is simple. If you’re at a MAAP partner school, flag it by October 7. Have your student pour real effort into the UC essays, because that’s the whole Regents Scholarship application. Then file the FAFSA or Dream Act application by March 2 no matter what you earn. If you’re out of state, go in with clear eyes: without a Regents award, you’re looking at full nonresident pricing.

Your kid did everything right. That does not mean the money follows.
Most families build a college list first and think about scholarships second, which is backwards. This free four-part series shows you where the money actually comes from, and how to build a list around it.
