Rolling admission is not your deadline. To be reviewed for University Scholarships, Frederick Honors priority, and the Rees-Chancellor’s Scholars Program, the application and every required piece need to be in by December 1.
Pennsylvania families have an even earlier date. Stamps and Nordenberg both run through the PA Scholars application, which is due November 15 along with the full admission application.
The essay is “optional” for admission but required for money. No personal statement or Common App essay means no scholarship review.
Silence means no. Pitt only contacts students who are getting a scholarship, anytime from late October through March 1. If March comes and goes without a letter, there isn’t one coming.
The award won’t grow. University Scholarships are a set dollar amount that stays flat while tuition rises, and every recipient pays a $300 enrollment fee by May 1 to lock it in (even full-ride winners).
Some groups aren’t in the main pool. University Scholarships are for U.S. citizens and permanent residents, and spring admits aren’t considered at all. International students have their own pool with a February 1 deadline.
Pre-med and pre-health “guarantees” need test scores. Starting with this cycle, the Medicine, Dental Medicine, and Physician Assistant guaranteed admission programs require SAT or ACT scores, and the Medicine guarantee needs the application in by mid-October.

What’s the full cost of a year at Pitt, not just tuition and housing?
Pitt’s own estimate for students living on or off campus adds housing ($10,374), food ($6,118), books ($596), transportation ($1,088), and personal expenses ($2,398) to tuition and fees. All in, that’s roughly $44,400 a year for a Pennsylvania student in Arts and Sciences and about $66,100 for an out-of-state student. That bigger number is what your aid letter will measure against.
Is the housing number what Pitt will actually bill?

What is Pitt Pell Plus?
If your student qualifies for a federal Pell Grant, Pitt adds its own money on top. There’s no application. It comes through the FAFSA, and it shows up in the aid offer. Pitt doesn’t publish a set amount.
How does a first-generation student get into Kessler Scholars?
It’s invitation-only. After admission, Pitt emails eligible first-gen students in Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Business, Nursing, Computing and Information, and Public Health. Students fill out a short questionnaire and interview. Scholars get at least $2,000 a year plus extra money to cover remaining need, a summer bridge program, and four years of coaching.
We’re in Pittsburgh Public Schools. Is there something for us?
Yes. Every PPS valedictorian and salutatorian is guaranteed admission to a Pitt campus and at least a $2,000 scholarship, and Pitt meets full need for those who are Pell-eligible. Admission to professional schools like Nursing or Engineering isn’t guaranteed, and a University merit scholarship replaces the $2,000 rather than adding to it.
Is there help if money gets tight near graduation?
Yes. The Pitt Finish Line Grant is a one-time grant for students in their final one or two terms with an unpaid balance, a current FAFSA, and a family income of $65,000 or less. Pitt reaches out directly, so keep the FAFSA filed every single year.
Does joining the marching band come with money?
It does. Every member of the Pitt Varsity Marching Band gets a modest scholarship that grows each year they stay in, regardless of major. The Band Alumni Council also funds separate scholarships for current members.
Are these renewable?
It depends on the award. Kessler and the band scholarship run year to year, while things like the OCC Advantage Grant and Finish Line Grant are one-time. Check each card above.
The Frederick Honors College (FHC) is Pitt’s honors home, based on the top floors of the Cathedral of Learning. It isn’t automatic. Your student checks a box on the Pitt application to be considered, and Pitt decides separately. About 700 first-year students are admitted into the Honors Degree program each fall.
Typical admit: SAT around 1450 to 1500 and/or ACT around 34, with about a 3.80 unweighted GPA (no minimums).
Priority deadline: December 1, with every required piece in.
Decisions: after general admission, and no later than March 1 for priority applicants.
What students get: priority registration starting their first spring, a personal FHC advisor, a transcript notation, and priority (not guaranteed) access to first-year honors housing.

A second chance for students who didn’t get merit
The David C. Frederick Scholarship is built for FHC students who did not receive an admissions scholarship and are working a job to pay for school. Sophomores with a 3.5+ GPA can apply for $12,500 a year for junior and senior year. It’s a real reason not to give up on Pitt money after a quiet March.
Frederick Honors College FAQs (University of Pittsburgh)
Is there a separate honors application?
No separate essay. Your student indicates interest in the Frederick Honors College on the Pitt application, and Pitt reviews the same file: weighted GPA, curriculum, test scores if sent, activities, and the essay.
Does getting into honors come with a scholarship?
Not on its own. FHC admission opens the door to Rees-Chancellor’s consideration and to funding later on, but it doesn’t carry an automatic dollar amount.
Can students join honors after their first year?
Yes. Pitt offers upper-division and transfer entry to the Honors Degree program, so a student who isn’t admitted as a first-year can try again once at Pitt.
What kind of money is there once a student is in FHC?
Research and creative fellowships during the year and summer, the Frederick and Keefe awards (up to $6,000 for a public service internship away from home), the Stewart award ($1,000 for junior year), and about 15 donor-funded awards matched through PittFundsMe.
Is honors housing guaranteed?
No. FHC students get priority access to the first-year honors living community, but placement isn’t guaranteed. Rees-Chancellor’s Scholars are the exception: their honors housing is guaranteed.
Pitt is a big research university in the middle of a city, and its reputation leans hard toward health and science. It sits right next to a major academic medical center (UPMC), and that shapes everything from what students major in to the research jobs they can land as undergrads. Students stick around, too: about 92% come back for sophomore year, and about 86% graduate within six years.
Nationally Known Strength: Health sciences and pre-med. Pitt’s schools of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Dental Medicine, Public Health, and Health and Rehabilitation Sciences are all on one campus. For pre-health families, Pitt’s guaranteed admission programs into its own medical, dental, pharmacy, nursing, and therapy programs are a big draw, but they’re selective and some now require test scores.
Biological sciences: about one in eight Pitt bachelor’s degrees, and the backbone of the pre-med path.
Engineering: the Swanson School of Engineering, with bioengineering as a natural fit next to the medical center.
Business: the largest share of degrees on campus, with a guaranteed path into Pitt’s master’s and MBA programs for strong applicants.
Computer science: housed in the School of Computing and Information, close to 10% of degrees.
Psychology: one of the most popular majors, and a common pairing with pre-health or neuroscience plans.
Philosophy: a quieter standout. Pitt’s philosophy and history and philosophy of science programs have a strong national reputation that many families don’t expect.

Your student either has a complete, thoughtful application in by December 1 (November 15 for Pennsylvania families chasing Stamps or Nordenberg) or they’ve quietly taken themselves out of the running.
