NJIT is New Jersey’s public polytechnic, sitting in Newark about 10 miles from Manhattan. It admits roughly two out of three applicants, and the Fall 2026 class averaged a 3.65 GPA, a 1339 SAT and a 30 ACT. Admission is test-optional, NJIT superscores when you do send scores, and applications go through the Common App.
The thing to understand about NJIT money: almost all of it is decided when your student is admitted. There’s no big scholarship application season. Your student’s merit award shows up in the admission package, and the dollar amounts aren’t published ahead of time.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at NJIT (Read This First)
Test-optional does not apply to the Honors College. Honors and accelerated-program applicants must send SAT or ACT scores. NJIT also “strongly encourages” scores because some endowed scholarships may require them.
Honors has one deadline: February 1. Accelerated programs close November 1. Miss those dates and the biggest scholarship pool (Honors awards up to tuition and fees) is off the table.
Some awards shrink when others show up. The Faculty Scholarship pays “up to tuition minus other tuition-based awards,” so a new tuition award can shrink it instead of adding to it.
The Dean’s Scholarship needs a FAFSA every single year and allows only one appeal if renewal slips.
New York and Pennsylvania families: the Highlander Gateway Scholarship covers the entire out-of-state tuition gap if your student earns any NJIT merit award. Confirm it’s running for your student’s entry year.
Deposit by May 1 or the award is gone. NJIT treats the tuition deposit as accepting the scholarship. The FAFSA priority date is March 1.

Average federal net price: $16,504 per year.
This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, for in-state students only, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. 📌 Regional Tuition & Waiver Options
Highlander Gateway Scholarship (New York and Pennsylvania). Starting with first-year students who entered in Fall 2026, NJIT covers the entire gap between out-of-state and in-state tuition for New York and Pennsylvania residents who earn any NJIT first-year merit scholarship. There is no separate application. It renews for four years (three for accelerated programs, five for Architecture) with a 2.5 GPA, full-time enrollment and continued NY or PA residency. Confirm it is still offered for your student's entry year.
NJIT does not take part in a regional tuition exchange such as the Academic Common Market, so students from other states pay the full non-resident rate unless merit closes the gap.
New Jersey Families: Know About the Garden State Guarantee
If your family’s adjusted gross income is $65,000 or less, New Jersey’s Garden State Guarantee brings tuition and mandatory fees to $0 in your student’s third and fourth years at NJIT. It’s a “last-dollar” program, so it fills whatever is left after other grants and scholarships. There’s no separate form. It runs entirely off the FAFSA (or the NJ Alternative Application) and the state’s NJFAMS portal, so missing a HESAA deadline is what knocks families out.
FAQ: Cost of Attendance at NJIT
Why does out-of-state cost almost twice as much?
Tuition for non-residents is $38,226 versus $18,352 for New Jersey residents in 2026-27, a gap of about $19,900. Fees ($4,074) and the on-campus housing and food estimate ($18,900) are the same for everyone, so the whole difference is tuition.
Is there any way for out-of-state students to pay in-state rates?
Only for New York and Pennsylvania right now. The Highlander Gateway Scholarship covers the full tuition gap for NY and PA residents who earn any NJIT merit award. NJIT isn’t part of a regional exchange like the Academic Common Market, so students from other states rely on merit to close the gap.
What if my student commutes from home?
NJIT budgets $9,000 for housing and food for students living with parents, plus $7,600 in other indirect costs. A lot of North Jersey families commute, and it can cut the bill by more than half compared with living on campus.
Did tuition go up this year?
Yes. In-state tuition and fees rose about 6 percent for 2026-27, from $21,162 to $22,426. The board approved it in July, after most students had already registered, so build a similar bump into your four-year math.
Is the average net price really around $16,500?
That’s the federal average for students who received grant or scholarship aid. Families with strong merit or real financial need often pay less. Families with neither should plan closer to the published cost.
Do architecture students pay more?
Tuition is the same, but NJIT’s books and supplies allowance is $4,800 for first-year architecture students versus $2,900 for other majors. Architecture is also a five-year degree, so plan for that extra year.
November 1: Accelerated program applications due (test scores required).
November 15 / December 15: Early Action I and II. Merit is reviewed at admission.
February 1: Honors College deadline, the only route to Honors scholarships.
March 1: FAFSA priority date and rolling admission deadline.
May 1: Tuition deposit due. This is how you accept the scholarship.
Parent rule of thumb: if Honors is even a maybe, treat February 1 as your real deadline and get test scores sent before then.
Automatic Merit Scholarships at NJIT
Every admitted first-year student is reviewed for merit automatically. There’s no separate scholarship application. NJIT doesn’t publish dollar amounts or GPA and test cutoffs, so you’ll see your student’s number in the admission package. NJIT superscores the SAT and ACT, and while scores are optional, they’re strongly encouraged for some endowed scholarships.

Entry criteria: NJ resident, combined SAT 1100+ or ACT 24+, a C+ average or better in core courses, strong math and science grades, and first-time full-time status. EOF students must fall under the state income limits (for 2026-27, for example, $64,300 gross for a household of four). Students above the limit can join as EOP students but pay for the summer program. Support includes an intensive pre-freshman summer program, winter session, counseling, tutoring and research opportunities. EOP students may be considered for various scholarships.

Automatic Merit FAQs (NJIT)
How much merit will my student get?
NJIT doesn’t publish its merit amounts or cutoffs. The award is set at admission based on grades, course rigor and any scores submitted, and it arrives with the acceptance.
Which application round do we need for merit?
NJIT doesn’t set a separate merit deadline. Early Action I (Nov 15), Early Action II (Dec 15) and Rolling (Mar 1) applicants are all considered. Applying early mostly gets you the answer, and the number, sooner.
Should my student send test scores?
If they help, yes. NJIT superscores, so your student’s best section scores count. NJIT also says scores may be required for certain endowed scholarships, and the Honors College requires them.
What does it take to keep the award?
Dean’s and Faculty Scholarships require full-time enrollment, a 3.0 GPA (3.2 for Honors students) and Satisfactory Academic Progress. The Dean’s Scholarship also needs a FAFSA every year and allows only one appeal. The Highlander Gateway needs a 2.5 GPA and continued NY or PA residency.
Why did my student’s Faculty Scholarship go down?
It’s designed to pay up to tuition minus your other tuition-based awards. When another tuition award comes in, this one adjusts so the total doesn’t go over tuition.
What is the Highlander Gateway worth?
At 2026-27 rates, about $19,900 a year, which is the full gap between non-resident and New Jersey tuition. It covers NY and PA residents who earn any NJIT merit award and sits on top of that award.
NJIT doesn’t run a big essay-and-interview scholarship weekend. Its competitive money comes from three places: National Merit Finalist status, the architecture design competition, and the Albert Dorman Honors College (covered in the Honors section below). If your student is aiming for full tuition, those are the doors to knock on.

❓ Flagship / Competitive Scholarship FAQs
What does NJIT give National Merit Finalists?
A four-year scholarship meant to cover tuition and fees, minus any other tuition-based awards. In plain English, the bill for tuition and fees goes to zero. Your student has to stay full-time with a 3.0 GPA. See our National Merit guide for how the PSAT timeline works.
Does my student have to list NJIT as their first choice with National Merit?
NJIT’s scholarship page doesn’t say so. Ask Financial Aid (finaid@njit.edu) once your student is a Semifinalist so you’re not guessing.
How does the architecture design competition work?
It’s a five-year award for incoming architecture students worth half to full tuition. NJIT doesn’t post the brief or judging criteria, so contact the Hillier College of Architecture and Design early. The required portfolio is the starting point.
Can National Merit and Honors awards add up to more than tuition?
Not on the tuition side. They fill in around each other until tuition and fees are covered. Housing awards like the Honors Residential Scholarship are separate and can still help.
Does NJIT offer athletic scholarships?
Yes. NJIT plays NCAA Division I as the Highlanders, and athletic awards vary by sport. Contact the athletics department directly.
🧠 Parent Strategy: The Money After the Merit Letter
NJIT’s merit award is just the opening number. The smaller awards come from places most families never check. Here’s the order to work through:

Once enrolled, claim your NJIT login and set up ScholarshipUniverse. Answer every profile question.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ
Is the Garden State Guarantee really free tuition?
For NJ families with adjusted gross income of $65,000 or less, yes, but only in the third and fourth years (60 to 128 credits) and only after other aid is applied. AP and dual-enrollment credits count toward reaching year three.
What is EOP, and does it pay for college?
NJIT’s Educational Opportunity Program is mainly support: a summer program before freshman year, tutoring, counseling and research opportunities. Students may also be considered for scholarships. To qualify, students need New Jersey residency, an 1100+ SAT or 24+ ACT, and household income under the state EOF limits. Students over the limit can still join as EOP students, but they pay for the summer program.
What is ScholarshipUniverse?
NJIT’s scholarship-matching portal. Your student builds a profile and gets a list of vetted outside scholarships they qualify for, with dollar amounts. It only works if the profile stays updated.
Are there awards just for architecture and design students?
Yes. The Hillier College gives Portfolio Prizes for the best creative portfolios submitted with the application, plus named awards for incoming students. Some, like the Hanini Group award, renew for five years.
Who qualifies for the Guttenberg Scholarship?
It’s $2,500 a year for four years, but restricted. Priority goes to New Jersey students with physical disabilities, then students from Paterson inner-city high schools, then students who lost a parent on September 11. Contact the EOP office or the Honors College.
The Albert Dorman Honors College is where NJIT’s biggest merit money lives. Admission is separate from regular admission, and it plays by different rules: test scores are required, and there is exactly one deadline.

Honors College FAQs (NJIT)
Is Honors admission automatic for high achievers?
No. Your student has to answer the Honors questions on the Common App and meet the February 1 deadline. Strong grades alone won’t get them considered.
Can my student skip test scores for Honors?
No. NJIT requires SAT or ACT scores for Dorman Honors and accelerated programs, even though regular admission is test-optional. Dean’s Scholars is the honors option that doesn’t need scores.
How much do Honors scholarships pay?
NJIT lists Honors Merit Awards as worth up to tuition and fees, and the Honors Residential Scholarship as $500 up to full housing and food for students living on campus. Exact amounts come after acceptance.
What GPA keeps Honors scholarships?
A 3.2, which is higher than the 3.0 required for regular merit.
If my student isn’t admitted to Honors as a freshman, is that the end of it?
No. Dean’s Scholars can apply to Dorman after their first or second year and get priority in that review.
NJIT is a tech school through and through, and that’s the point. It’s one of only three R1 research universities in New Jersey, the top research tier in the country. Its location next to the New York City job market is a big part of why its graduates do well. The rankings NJIT is proudest of are about value: it’s ranked as the best-value public university in New Jersey and among the top public colleges nationally for career placement.
Nationally Known Programs: Engineering and Computing. The Newark College of Engineering is ranked among the top 80 undergraduate engineering programs nationally, with civil and biomedical engineering standing out. The Ying Wu College of Computing covers computer science, data science and cybersecurity, and it’s the pipeline into the region’s finance and tech employers.
Architecture and Design: The Hillier College offers a five-year professional architecture degree plus industrial, interior and digital design. Its game design program is nationally ranked.
Business: The Martin Tuchman School of Management blends business with technology and ranks nationally for entrepreneurship.
Pre-Health: Pre-health students can go through the Honors College, including an accelerated BS/MD path with Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.
Math and Sciences: The Jordan Hu College of Science and Liberal Arts covers mathematics, biology and the physical sciences for students who want research or graduate school.
Parent takeaway: if your student wants engineering, computing, design or business with a heavy tech side, NJIT gives you a research-university education at public-school pricing, with the NYC job market a train ride away.
NJIT is a straightforward deal with a few hidden rules. The school is a public, research-heavy tech university at in-state prices, with New York City’s job market right next door. Most of the money is decided the moment your student is admitted, and NJIT won’t tell you the numbers ahead of time. That makes the decisions you control the ones that matter most.
If your student has strong scores, send them, and seriously consider Honors before February 1. That’s where awards up to full tuition live, and test-optional doesn’t apply there. If you’re in New York or Pennsylvania, the Highlander Gateway can erase the out-of-state premium entirely. If you’re a New Jersey family under $65,000, the Garden State Guarantee can make junior and senior year tuition-free. Whatever the award letter says, watch how the pieces fit together: NJIT fills tuition up to the bill, not past it, so outside money and housing awards are where you pick up extra ground.
Your kid did everything right. That does not mean the money follows.
Most families build a college list first and think about scholarships second, which is backwards. This free four-part series shows you where the money actually comes from, and how to build a list around it.
