🎓 How UAlbany Admissions Works (Quick Version)

  • Early Action: November 15. It’s non-binding, and complete applicants get a decision by the end of December. It is also the cutoff for UAlbany’s competitive scholarships, so it matters for money, not just admission.
  • Regular Admission: February 1 priority date, with decisions by the end of March.
  • Common App or SUNY App. Pick one. UAlbany takes either.
  • Test-optional, and they mean it. UAlbany actually recommends applying without scores unless the scores tell a better story than the transcript.
  • Typical admit: a high school average in the high 80s to mid 90s (roughly 3.3 to 4.0).

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at UAlbany (Read This First)

  • Out-of-state families have to pick a lane. UAlbany’s Flagship Match (you pay your home state flagship’s in-state tuition) and its out-of-state merit scholarship plus Room Grant can’t be combined. For most states the Match is the better deal, but run the numbers below before you deposit.
  • Test scores won’t earn you a dime. Merit scholarships are test-blind. Submitting a great ACT may help admission a little, but it does nothing for scholarship money.
  • New York merit is “non-tuition” money, and that’s a good thing. It pays for fees, housing and books, so it layers on top of TAP and Excelsior instead of replacing them.
  • Competitive awards need two steps. Apply Early Action by November 15, then file a separate scholarship application by January 1. Miss either one and you’re out.
  • The FAFSA date is December 1, earlier than most families expect.
  • Housing awards have strings. The Room Grant disappears if your student moves off campus or into Empire Commons.

💰 Cost of Attendance at University at Albany: 2026–2027 Rates

Figures verified against official sources in October 2026.

📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest University at Albany has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.

Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly $600 to $1,400 more than the in-state total below. $1,000 to $2,500 more than the out-of-state total below.

In-State: billed cost per year
$27,921
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $10,716
Housing & meals (typical) $17,205
Total billed cost $27,921
Out-of-State: billed cost per year
$49,981
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $32,776
Housing & meals (typical) $17,205
Total billed cost $49,981

That is $22,060 more per year than New York residents pay, before any waivers or scholarships.

Average federal net price: $17,949 per year. This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, for in-state students only, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.

Out-of-state families: this average does not include you. Run the college's own net price calculator for a number based on your situation.

📌 Regional Tuition & Waiver Options

UAlbany is not part of a regional tuition exchange, but it offers something more useful to many families: the Flagship U.S. Match. Out-of-state students can attend for the in-state tuition and fees of their home state's flagship university instead of UAlbany's out-of-state rate. The catch is that the Match cannot be combined with UAlbany's out-of-state merit scholarship or the $2,500 Room Grant, so compare both offers before you commit. See UAlbany's flagship list by state.
🧮 Out-of-State? Do the Flagship Match Math First

UAlbany’s out-of-state tuition and fees run $32,776 a year. With the Flagship Match, you pay your home state flagship’s in-state tuition and fees instead. With merit, you get $10,000 to $16,500 off (plus a $2,500 Room Grant for some students). You can’t have both, so here’s the quick test:

Your merit offer The Match is the better deal if your home flagship’s in-state tuition and fees are under about…
$16,500 + $2,500 Room Grant$13,800
$16,500$16,300
$14,000$18,800
$10,000$22,800
No merit offerAlmost always take the Match

Look up your flagship on UAlbany’s state-by-state list, then check that school’s current in-state tuition and fees.

FAQ: Cost of Attendance at UAlbany

Can New York students go to UAlbany tuition-free?
Many can. New York’s Excelsior Scholarship covers remaining SUNY tuition for families with an adjusted gross income of $125,000 or less, as long as the student completes 30 credits a year and agrees to live (and if employed, work) in New York for as many years as they received it. Excelsior covers tuition only, so housing and meals are still on you. One heads-up: UAlbany leaves Excelsior out of its preliminary aid packages, so your first offer may look higher than what you’ll actually pay.

Does UAlbany’s merit scholarship reduce my Excelsior or TAP?
No, and this is one of UAlbany’s best-kept secrets. The New York merit award is “non-tuition” money that goes toward fees, housing and books. Excelsior only counts aid aimed at tuition, so the two stack instead of canceling each other out.

Does UAlbany offer in-state tuition to out-of-state students?
Not through a regional exchange. New York isn’t part of programs like NEBHE or WUE. Instead, UAlbany’s Flagship Match lets out-of-state students pay their home flagship’s in-state tuition and fees. For families from states with lower-cost flagships, that can cut tuition and fees roughly in half.

What isn’t included in the totals above?
Books, travel, personal expenses, course and lab fees, and a one-time $265 New Student Fee for freshmen. The housing figure assumes a standard double on one of the residential quads, and the meal figure assumes an unlimited plan, so other choices can move the number up or down.

Is the average net price really around $17,900?
That’s the most recent federal figure: what first-year students who received grant or scholarship aid paid on average after that aid. New York families with TAP, Excelsior or Pell often pay less. Out-of-state families without the Flagship Match or merit can pay much more.

Will tuition go up while my student is enrolled?
Possibly. SUNY’s Board of Trustees sets tuition and can change it. UAlbany’s merit awards are flat dollar amounts, so if costs rise, the award covers a little less each year. Plan for modest increases.

  • November 15: Early Action deadline. Required for competitive scholarships.
  • December 1: FAFSA priority date.
  • December: UAlbany Foundation scholarship application opens.
  • January 1: Competitive scholarship applications (like the Capital District Leadership Award) due.

Parent rule of thumb: treat November 15 as your real deadline. Applying early keeps every door open.

Automatic Merit Scholarships at UAlbany

Every first-year applicant is reviewed for merit automatically, with no extra application. Decisions are test-blind: UAlbany looks at the academic record only, so test scores don’t change the award. New York students can earn $1,000 to $7,000 a year. Out-of-state students can earn $10,000 to $16,500 a year, or take the Flagship Match instead.

Residency
Based on published cutoffs for entering freshmen. Always verify with the college before finalizing plans.
Start with your state. The awards in this first group come from the state, not the college. They are decided by residency and the FAFSA, and they stack on top of whatever automatic merit award the college gives below. If you live out of state, use the toggle above and these will step aside.

✚
Stacking & Combining
A last-dollar program: after TAP, Pell, and other tuition grants, the state pays whatever SUNY tuition is left, up to $7,070. Tuition only; fees, housing, and meals are not covered. The 30-credit rule is strict and the residency obligation is real. Stacks with campus scholarships that cover non-tuition costs.

🕵
Who Actually Wins
Most winners: Families between roughly $80,000 and $125,000, since TAP and Pell already cover tuition below that. The losses are on credits, not grades: a dropped class that leaves a student at 27 credits for the year ends the award, and a student who takes a job out of state after graduation owes the money back.

🕵
Who Actually Wins

UAlbany Merit Scholarship for New York State First-Year Students
📅 Deadline: Varies
✓ Renews (3 yrs)
$1,000–$7,000/yr
✔ Stackable
⚠  Automatic five-tier merit award reserved for New York State freshmen; allocated to fees, room and board, books, and personal expenses rather than tuition.
Renewable for three additional academic years with continuous full-time enrollment (at least 12 degree-applicable credits per semester), satisfactory academic progress, and continued eligibility for NYS tuition rates.

✚
Stacking & Combining
Because this award is non-tuition money, it sits on top of tuition aid like TAP, Pell and the Excelsior Scholarship instead of crowding it out. Excelsior is a last-dollar program that only counts aid not designated for non-tuition costs, so this award does not shrink an Excelsior payment. It also combines with the Capital District Leadership Award, eSports and band awards, and outside scholarships, up to cost of attendance.

💡
Strategic Detail
Five automatic merit tiers for New York State first-year students: $1,000, $3,000, $4,000, $5,000 and $7,000 per year. Decisions are test-blind, so submitted SAT or ACT scores do not affect the award (home-schooled applicants and Guaranteed Entrance to Upstate Medical applicants must still submit scores). This is a non-tuition award: it pays fees, room and board, books and personal expenses, not tuition. Total aid cannot exceed cost of attendance.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
New York students with strong grades in a rigorous high school schedule. With five tiers starting at $1,000, the award reaches well beyond the very top of the class. UAlbany reviews the academic record only; test scores play no role.

UAlbany Merit Scholarship for Out-of-State First-Year Students

⚠  Three named automatic merit tiers ($10K / $14K / $16.5K) for out-of-state freshmen; mutually exclusive with UAlbany's Flagship Match.
Renewable for three additional academic years with continuous full-time enrollment (at least 12 degree-applicable credits per semester), satisfactory academic progress, and continued eligibility for out-of-state tuition.

✚
Stacking & Combining
This is an either/or choice with the Flagship Match: a student takes this award (plus the $2,500 Room Grant if offered) or the Match, not both. The Match wins whenever your home flagship's in-state tuition and fees are lower than UAlbany's out-of-state tuition and fees minus your merit award and Room Grant. For most states that favors the Match; merit tends to win only for top-tier students from states with expensive flagships. This award does combine with the Capital District Leadership Award, eSports and band awards, federal aid and outside scholarships, up to cost of attendance.

💡
Strategic Detail
Three automatic merit tiers for out-of-state first-year students: $10,000, $14,000 and $16,500 per year, applied to tuition, fees, room and board. Decisions are test-blind (home-schooled applicants must submit scores). Renewable for three more years, for four-year values of $40,000, $56,000 or $66,000. Cannot be combined with the Flagship Match. UAlbany's page header for this section says these awards range from $1,000 to $7,000, which conflicts with the three tiers listed underneath; the named tiers are what we report.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
Out-of-state students with strong to outstanding academic records. Test scores are not considered. For most families the real question is not whether they get merit but whether merit beats the Flagship Match for their home state.

⚠  Automatic OOS program matching home-state flagship in-state tuition and fees; mutually exclusive with the UAlbany OOS Merit Scholarship and Room Grant.
Available to out-of-state students from all 50 states plus DC. The matched amount is set by the in-state tuition and fees of the student's home state flagship per the UAlbany Flagship Match state-by-state list.

✚
Stacking & Combining
Either/or with UAlbany's out-of-state merit scholarship and the Room Grant. The Match usually wins for families from states with lower-cost flagships. Merit can win for top-tier students whose home flagship charges more than roughly $13,800 to $22,800 in in-state tuition and fees, depending on the merit tier. State aid, federal aid and outside scholarships can still be added, up to cost of attendance.

💡
Strategic Detail
Out-of-state students can attend UAlbany for the in-state tuition and fees of their home state's flagship university, using UAlbany's published state-by-state flagship list (all 50 states plus DC). UAlbany's 2026-2027 out-of-state tuition and fees total $32,776, so the value of the Match equals that figure minus your home flagship's in-state tuition and fees. UAlbany describes the program as open to qualifying students but does not publish separate eligibility criteria. Cannot be combined with the out-of-state merit scholarship or the Room Grant.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
Most winners: Out-of-state families from states with lower-cost flagship universities, who often save more with the Match than with any merit tier. Confirm with UAlbany admissions that your student qualifies, then run the comparison before deposit day.

Must live in UAlbany on-campus housing (other than Empire Commons). Renewable for three additional years with full-time enrollment, satisfactory academic progress, and continued OOS tuition eligibility.

✚
Stacking & Combining

Strategic Detail
$2,500 per year housing-targeted grant for OOS freshmen with outstanding academic excellence. Applied toward on-campus housing only (Empire Commons is excluded). Must have completed UHS coursework with a grade of B or higher and maintained a high school GPA of 86 or higher on a 100-point scale. The 86/100 HS GPA threshold is reported in UAlbany source materials and does not map to the standard 4.0 scale.

✚
Stacking & Combining
Stacks with UAlbany merit scholarships and any state/federal aid up to cost of attendance. Small dollar amount but adds straight to the package since it's automatic.

Eligibility: B or higher in UHS coursework and a high school GPA of 86+ on the 100-point scale. Renewable for three additional years (potential four-year totals of $1,000 or $2,000). Non-tuition allocation.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
High school students who took UAlbany in the High School (UHS) courses, earned a B or better, and kept their overall high school average at 86 or higher. It is a small award, but it is automatic for students already in the UHS pipeline.
Data last verified Oct 1, 2026.* GPA/test bands are estimates based on official selectivity and prior cohort profiles. "Who Actually Wins" insights are pulled from external peer-sourced data where students and parents have reported real-world award results. Because colleges can change funding thresholds and deadlines at any time, always verify these details with the institution before finalizing your application strategy.

Note: UAlbany’s out-of-state section header says awards “range from $1,000 to $7,000,” but the three out-of-state tiers listed underneath are $10,000, $14,000 and $16,500. We report the named tiers. Confirm with admissions if your offer looks different.

Automatic Merit: FAQs (UAlbany)

How much merit can a New York student get?
There are five tiers: $1,000, $3,000, $4,000, $5,000 and $7,000 a year, renewable for four years. That’s up to $28,000 total. It’s non-tuition money, so it covers fees, housing and books and stacks with TAP and Excelsior.

How much can an out-of-state student get?
There are three tiers: $10,000, $14,000 and $16,500 a year, or $40,000 to $66,000 over four years. Some top students also get a $2,500 Room Grant for living on campus.

Can we get the Flagship Match and merit together?
No. It’s one or the other, and the Room Grant goes with merit, not the Match. For most states the Match saves more. Use the break-even chart in the cost section above.

Should we send test scores for scholarships?
They won’t help. UAlbany’s merit decisions are test-blind, so the transcript and the rigor of the high school schedule do the work. The exceptions are home-schooled applicants and Guaranteed Entrance to Upstate Medical applicants, who must submit scores.

Is there a separate scholarship deadline for automatic merit?
No. Merit is decided at admission. Applying Early Action by November 15 gets you a decision by the end of December, which gives you the most time to compare offers.

My student took UAlbany in the High School (UHS) courses. Does that count for anything?
Yes. Students with one UHS course get $250 a year, and those with two or more get $500 a year, as long as they earned a B or better and kept a high school average of 86 or higher. It’s automatic and adds on top of regular merit.

What does it take to keep the award?
Stay enrolled full time (at least 12 degree-applicable credits each semester), keep making satisfactory academic progress, and keep the same residency status. The Room Grant also requires living in eligible campus housing every year.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)

Here’s the honest picture: UAlbany doesn’t have a big full-ride or full-tuition competition. Its biggest dollars are the automatic merit awards and the Flagship Match. The competitive list is short. The Capital District Leadership Award ($5,000 a year) is only for seniors from 12 counties around Albany. The eSports scholarship works like a team tryout. UAlbany used to offer a set of $2,000 college-based competitive awards, but they’re no longer on the current scholarship list.

✅ Can You Stack Scholarships at UAlbany?

Aid Type Stacks with Merit? Parent Translation
Automatic Merit N/A You get one tier, decided at admission.
Flagship Match No Out-of-state merit and the Room Grant are off the table if you take the Match. Pick whichever saves more.
Competitive Awards (CDLA, eSports) Yes These stack with merit, but your student can only win one competitive award.
TAP / Excelsior (NY) Yes New York merit is non-tuition money, so it doesn’t shrink these tuition programs.
Foundation, Alumni and Outside Awards Usually They add on, but total aid can’t exceed cost of attendance. Report outside awards to Student Financial Services.

If your student is chasing essay-and-interview full rides, UAlbany isn’t that kind of school. Its value comes from a low in-state price, stackable New York aid and a strong out-of-state match program.

❓ Competitive Scholarship FAQs (UAlbany)

What’s the deadline for UAlbany’s competitive scholarships?
It takes two steps. Apply to UAlbany through Early Action by November 15, then submit the competitive award application in the UAlbany Applicant Portal by January 1. Finalists may be interviewed.

Who can apply for the Capital District Leadership Award?
High school seniors attending school in Albany, Columbia, Fulton, Greene, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Ulster, Warren or Washington counties. It’s $5,000 a year ($20,000 over four years), and renewal requires a 3.0 GPA and 12 credits each semester.

Does UAlbany have a full-ride or full-tuition scholarship?
Not as an institutional award. New York families from households earning $125,000 or less can get tuition covered through Excelsior. Out-of-state families get their biggest savings from the Flagship Match.

Can my student win more than one competitive award?
No. Students can apply for several, but UAlbany awards only one. Each one does stack with automatic merit.

How does the eSports scholarship work?
Earn a spot on the UAlbany eSports team and you get $1,000 a year, renewable for up to four years if you stay in good standing on the team.

What should my student prepare?
A clear leadership story with specifics: what they started, led or changed. Our Essay Toolkit and Brag Sheet Builder help organize it.

🧠 Parent Strategy: The Winter Money Calendar

Most of UAlbany’s extra money opens after your student applies, between December and March, while families are distracted waiting on decisions. Put these on the calendar now:

  1. On the application: check the EOP box if your family is a New York household that meets the income guidelines.
  2. December: the UAlbany Foundation scholarship application opens. It’s one form for hundreds of donor scholarships.
  3. February 1 to 20: Bertha Brimmer Legacy Scholarship (if a parent or grandparent went to UAlbany).
  4. Around March 1: UUP undergraduate scholarship (open to all SUNY students).
  5. Fall of freshman year: join the marching band or Spirit Band for $1,000 a year.

Parent translation: automatic merit is the base. These smaller awards are what close the gap on housing and meals.

💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships

None of these are automatic, and most families never hear about them. Several stack right on top of merit and New York aid. A few have narrow eligibility, so read the fine print on each card.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

What is EOP, and does it really help pay for college?
UAlbany’s Educational Opportunity Program is for New York students from lower-income households whose grades may sit a bit below the typical admit range. It combines admission, academic support and case-by-case funding. EOP applicants also don’t pay an application fee and can apply to up to seven SUNY campuses free.

Is the band scholarship only for music majors?
No. Every member of the Marching Great Danes or the UAlbany Spirit Band who registers for the ensemble course gets $500 a semester. There’s no separate application, so joining is the application.

When does the UAlbany Foundation scholarship application open?
In December, for the following school year. Many of these awards are need-based, so file the FAFSA first.

We’re a UAlbany alumni family. Is there anything for us?
Yes. The Bertha Brimmer Legacy Scholarship is $2,000 for incoming children or grandchildren of UAlbany graduates. Applications open February 1 and close February 20.

Does UAlbany help undocumented students?
UAlbany partners with TheDream.US, whose National Scholarship covers up to $33,000 toward a bachelor’s degree for eligible students who qualify for in-state tuition. The next round opens November 1.

Can current UAlbany students still apply for these?
Yes. The Foundation, Alumni Association Spirit and UUP scholarships are all open to continuing students, so check back every winter.

The Honors College at UAlbany

UAlbany’s Honors College is open to students in any major and is built around small, discussion-heavy seminars and a senior project with a faculty mentor. College Transitions named it one of the “50 Best Honors Colleges” in 2024. Here’s what families need to know up front: Honors at UAlbany comes with perks, not scholarship dollars.

  • How to get in: admitted students may get an invitation to apply. If you don’t, an accepted student can nominate themselves through the Honors College admissions page.
  • Already enrolled? Strong first-year students are invited to apply once first-semester grades post.
  • What you get: priority class and housing registration, Honors housing, dedicated advisors and an Honors librarian, plus research opportunities and research funding.

Honors College Scholarships

This institution does not offer designated Honors College scholarships at this time.

UAlbany does not currently list scholarships tied to Honors College membership. Honors students still receive the same automatic merit, Flagship Match and New York aid as everyone else.

Why Honors Still Matters for Money: priority registration helps students finish in four years, which keeps four-year merit awards and Excelsior on track. Excelsior requires 30 credits a year. The Honors College also runs an office that helps students apply for nationally competitive scholarships and fellowships.

Honors College: FAQs (UAlbany)

Is UAlbany Honors admission automatic?
No. Some admitted students receive an invitation to apply, and accepted students can also nominate themselves. Space is limited.

Does joining the Honors College come with a scholarship?
Not at UAlbany. The benefits are academic and practical: smaller classes, priority registration, Honors housing and research support.

Can out-of-state students join?
Yes. Honors is open to students from any state and any major, and it doesn’t affect the Flagship Match or merit awards.

Is there a deadline?
Follow the instructions in your invitation or on the Honors College admissions page. Apply soon after your admission decision, since space fills.

Are Honors classes harder?
They’re different more than harder. Honors seminars are small and discussion-based, and everyone is expected to contribute.

⭐ College Specialty

UAlbany is a research university (R1) sitting in New York’s state capital, and that location shapes what it does best. If your student is drawn to government, policy, law enforcement, security or weather science, this campus punches well above its price tag.

Nationally Known Program:
College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity (CEHC): the first college in the country to bring emergency preparedness, homeland security and cybersecurity together under one roof. Students train through realistic simulations and real disaster-response volunteer work, not just lectures.
  • Criminal Justice: UAlbany’s School of Criminal Justice offered the nation’s first PhD in criminal justice. Undergraduates learn from faculty who helped shape the field.
  • Political Science and Public Policy (Rockefeller College): Albany is one of the largest seats of government in the country, so internships at the Capitol and state agencies are a short ride away.
  • Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences: one of UAlbany’s signature research strengths, and a smart pick for students interested in weather and climate.
  • Business (Massry School of Business): business administration is one of the most popular majors on campus, with ties to the Capital Region’s tech, healthcare and finance employers.
  • Public Health, Psychology and Biology: big, well-traveled majors with research labs and clear pre-health pathways.

✅ Wrapping It Up

UAlbany is one of those schools where the sticker price hides how affordable it can be, and the path is different depending on where you live.

If you’re a New York family, the math is friendly. Tuition is low to begin with, Excelsior can wipe it out entirely for households under $125,000, and UAlbany’s merit award goes on top of that because it pays for housing and fees instead of tuition. If you’re from out of state, your big decision happens in the spring: Flagship Match or merit. For most states the Match wins, so look up your flagship’s in-state price before deposit day.

Either way, this is an R1 research university in the state capital, with nationally recognized programs in criminal justice, public policy and emergency preparedness. The families who get the most out of UAlbany apply Early Action, file the FAFSA by December 1, and don’t skip the Foundation application when it opens in December.
