📣 What Changed for the Fall 2027 Class

If you read about Mizzou scholarships a year or two ago, set that aside. For students starting in Fall 2027, Mizzou stopped tying its automatic merit awards to ACT and SAT cutoffs. Awards are now based on two things: the Mizzou Core GPA (grades in core English, math, science, social science, foreign language and one fine art, with no plus or minus) and how hard a schedule your student took compared with what their high school offers. Students who send scores and students who apply test-optional get the same consideration.

The catch: Mizzou no longer publishes a chart that tells you which award a given GPA earns. You will find out when merit notices go out in late January.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Mizzou (Read This First)

  • December 1 is the date that matters, and December 15 is the trap. Apply by Dec. 1 for merit, but the official transcript has to land by Dec. 15. High schools can take two weeks to send it, so request it before Thanksgiving.
  • Out-of-state awards only cover the out-of-state portion of tuition. They cannot touch housing, meals or the in-state part of the bill.
  • Gaining Missouri residency later can cost you money. Students who switch to resident status lose the nonresident scholarships they were given at admission, and they cannot pick up the resident-only Land Grant or MU Grant either.
  • Level 2 plus Border State is not as good as it looks. The $3,000 Border State Award only stacks with the Level 2 awards. Level 1 at $21,500 still beats any Level 2 combination.
  • Live in a county that touches Missouri? Check it. The Tiger Border County Award pays up to $21,500 a year, far more than the $3,000 Border State Award, but it cannot be combined with anything else.
  • Missouri residents: send your ACT superscore to the state yourself. Bright Flight accepts superscores, but the state does not get them automatically.

FAQ

Is this college test-optional? Yes, for admission. University of Missouri is test-optional for admission, but scholarships can work differently (see the next question).

Do you need test scores for scholarships at University of Missouri? Mizzou says test-optional students get the same scholarship look for most awards, but Stamps, Discovery Fellows and Brazeal ask for at least a 32 ACT or 1420 SAT.

What is the middle 50% ACT/SAT? ACT: 23-30; SAT: N/A.

Average net price? About $22,169/year after aid.

Does this school use waivers/reciprocity? Yes. Institutional waivers are available.

💰 Cost of Attendance at University of Missouri: 2026–2027 Rates

Figures verified against official sources in October 2026.

📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest University of Missouri has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.

Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly $600 to $1,600 more than the in-state total below. $1,100 to $2,800 more than the out-of-state total below.

In-State: billed cost per year
$31,942
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $16,162
Housing & meals (typical) $15,780
Total billed cost $31,942
Out-of-State: billed cost per year
$55,104
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $39,324
Housing & meals (typical) $15,780
Total billed cost $55,104

That is $23,162 more per year than Missouri residents pay, before any waivers or scholarships.

Average federal net price: $22,169 per year. This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, for in-state students only, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.

Out-of-state families: this average does not include you. Run the college's own net price calculator for a number based on your situation.

📌 Regional Tuition & Waiver Options

Mizzou does not list the Midwest Student Exchange Program (MSEP) or any other regional tuition exchange on its cost or scholarship pages. Out-of-state savings come through automatic merit awards that apply to the nonresident portion of tuition: Mark Twain (up to $21,500 a year), Black & Gold for children of Mizzou graduates (up to $21,500), the Tiger Border County Award for students living in a county that touches Missouri (up to $21,500), and a $3,000 Border State Award for residents of Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Tennessee. Students can petition for Missouri residency after 12 months, but gaining residency cancels the nonresident scholarships awarded at admission.
Why Your Bill May Not Match the Table

Mizzou charges a flat tuition rate for 12 to 18 credits a semester, but the rate depends on the major. For 2026-27, in-state tuition and fees run about $16,162 to $20,290 a year, and out-of-state runs $39,324 to $43,452. The table above uses the lower figure. Engineering, business, nursing and other higher-tier majors land toward the top of that range. Housing and dining are estimated at $15,780 for everyone, and books, travel and personal costs are on top of that.

FAQ: Cost of Attendance at the University of Missouri

How much does Mizzou cost per year?
For 2026-27, billed costs (tuition, fees, housing and dining) run about $31,942 to $36,070 for Missouri residents and $55,104 to $59,232 for out-of-state students, depending on major. Books, travel and personal spending are extra.

Why does tuition change by major?
Mizzou has three undergraduate tuition tiers tied to your student’s primary major. Two students in the same dorm can pay different tuition if one is in engineering and the other is in history. If your student switches majors, the rate can change too.

Is Mizzou part of the Midwest Student Exchange Program (MSEP)?
Mizzou does not list MSEP or any regional tuition exchange on its cost or scholarship pages. Its out-of-state discounts come through automatic awards instead: Mark Twain, Black & Gold for children of Mizzou graduates, the Tiger Border County Award and the Border State Award.

Can an out-of-state student switch to in-state tuition?
Yes. Students can petition for Missouri residency after living in the state for 12 months, and summer travel outside Missouri is limited to 14 days during the petition period. But read the fine print: students who gain residency lose the nonresident scholarships they were awarded at admission. For a student holding a $21,500 award, switching may save little or nothing. Run the numbers with Student Financial Aid first.

What does the $22,169 average net price mean?
That is the federal average that families actually paid after grants and scholarships, before loans. It blends in-state and out-of-state students. Pell-eligible Missouri residents can pay far less because of the Missouri Land Grant, and out-of-state families without large merit awards usually pay more.

Can low-income Missouri families get tuition covered?
Yes. The Missouri Land Grant covers whatever tuition and mandatory fees are left after other grants for Pell-eligible Missouri residents who file the FAFSA on time. It does not cover housing or meals, and starting with Fall 2027 freshmen, eligibility has to be set in the first year.

Do scholarships go up when tuition goes up?
No. Mizzou’s merit awards are fixed dollar amounts for up to eight fall and spring semesters. If tuition rises, the gap your family pays grows a little each year. Summer classes are not covered.

  • December 1, 2026: Admission application in, fee paid, transcript requested. Also the deadline for Honors scholarships and the Mizzou Scholarship Application Portal.
  • December 15, 2026: Official transcript (and any test scores) must be received for priority merit.
  • Late January 2027: Merit scholarship notices begin.
  • February 1, 2027: FAFSA priority deadline for need-based aid, including the MU Grant and Missouri Land Grant.

Parent rule of thumb: get everything into Mizzou’s hands by Thanksgiving week. The university is closed the Thursday and Friday of Thanksgiving.

Automatic Merit Scholarships at the University of Missouri

These awards come with admission. There is nothing extra to fill out. For Fall 2027, Mizzou bases them on the Mizzou Core GPA and course rigor, not test scores, and it does not publish cutoffs for each level. The two exceptions are the full-tuition National Merit and Perfect Score awards for Missouri residents. Apply by December 1 with official materials in by December 15.

Bright Flight Scholarship (Missouri Residents, State Program)
📅 Deadline: No application. The deadline is a test date: for a 2027 graduate, the qualifying score has to come from the June 2027 national test date or earlier. July does not count. MDHEWD needs six to eight weeks after each test date to receive scores, and approval letters start going out in the spring of senior year.

✎ ~30 ACT✎ ~1590 SATMissouri residents who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents with an ACT or SAT composite in the top 5 percent of Missouri test takers. For 2025 and 2026 graduates that meant an ACT of 30 or 31 (or SAT 800 math with 790 to 799 reading) for up to $1,000 a year, and an ACT of 32 or higher (or SAT 800 and 800) for up to $3,000 a year. Superscores count. The cutoffs are recalculated each fall, and the scores for 2027 graduates had not been published as of October 2026. The student must enroll first-time and full-time at a participating Missouri school in the academic year right after high school. Paid half in fall and half in spring, never in summer.

✚
Stacking & Combining
Bright Flight has no income test, and Missouri leaves it out when it checks Access Missouri against cost of attendance, so it stacks on top of need-based aid and the college's own scholarships.

💡
Strategic Detail
A state merit scholarship for Missouri residents attending a Missouri college. For recent graduating classes, a 32+ ACT earned up to $3,000 a year and a 30 or 31 earned up to $1,000; the state resets cutoffs each fall based on the top 5 percent of Missouri test takers. Superscores count, but the state does not receive them automatically: students must send their ACT superscore using code 2379. Paid for up to 10 semesters with a 2.5 GPA.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
Missouri students at roughly a 30 ACT or higher who listed at least one approved Missouri school when they tested. ACT now sends superscores to MDHEWD, but check the Student Portal to make sure the higher number arrived, and if it did not, send it from the ACT account using code 2379. Students lose it by taking a gap year without a written deferment, counting on a July test, or transferring without calling MDHEWD at 800-473-6757, option 4. Keeping it takes a 2.5 cumulative GPA after the first year, for up to 10 semesters or a bachelor's degree.
One award, not a pile. Colleges apply your student's single best automatic award. Automatic scholarships almost never stack with each other, though some stack with housing, departmental, or outside money. The stacking notes on each card tell you which.

Automatic Merit: FAQs (University of Missouri)

Do ACT or SAT scores matter for Mizzou merit scholarships?
For most automatic awards, no. Mizzou says students who submit scores and students who apply test-optional get the same scholarship consideration. Scores still matter for the Perfect Score Scholarship, National Merit, the Honors College awards (Stamps, Brazeal, Discovery Fellows) and the state’s Bright Flight scholarship. Homeschooled students, GED or HiSET holders, and students at unaccredited high schools must submit an official score to be considered for merit.

What is the Mizzou Core GPA?
It is a GPA Mizzou recalculates from your student’s core classes only: English, math starting with Algebra I, science, social science, foreign language and one fine art credit. Plus and minus grades are ignored, so a B+ counts the same as a B. Courses like personal finance, yearbook and general science do not count.

How does course rigor change the award?
Mizzou compares how many of the hardest core classes your student took (AP, IB or dual credit) against what their high school offers. In Mizzou’s own example, two students with the same GPA at similar schools get different amounts because one took twice as many AP and dual credit classes. A student at a school with few advanced options is not penalized for what was not available.

Can my student stack Mizzou merit scholarships?
Mostly no. Students get one merit award. The exception is the $3,000 Border State Award, which adds to Mark Twain Level 2 ($11,500 total) or Black & Gold Level 2 ($14,000 total) for students from Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Nebraska, Oklahoma or Tennessee. The Tiger Border County Awards cannot be combined with anything.

What is the Black & Gold Award?
It is Mizzou’s legacy award for out-of-state students whose biological, adoptive or stepparent graduated from Mizzou. Level 1 pays $21,500 a year, the same as Mark Twain Level 1. Level 2 pays $11,000, which is $2,500 more than Mark Twain Level 2. The parent must have earned a Mizzou degree, not just attended.

Does a National Merit student need to list Mizzou as first choice?
Missouri residents do not, and Semifinalist status is enough for the full-tuition package. Out-of-state students must be named Finalists and declare Mizzou as their first choice with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Declaring by May 1 adds $1,000.

How do students keep these scholarships?
Stay full time (12+ credits), stay enrolled every fall and spring, meet satisfactory academic progress and keep at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA. Awards last up to eight fall and spring semesters and do not pay for summer classes.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)

Mizzou’s competitive awards come in two flavors. The Stamps Scholarship is a true head-to-head competition with essays, recommendation letters and interviews, and it pays the full cost of attendance. The Mizzou Scholars and Columns Awards are “competitive” only in the sense that Mizzou picks winners from the admission file. Your student does nothing extra beyond applying by December 1.

✅ Can You Stack Scholarships at Mizzou?

Aid Type Stacks with Merit? Mizzou Parent Translation
Automatic Merit One award only Your student gets one merit award. The lone add-on is the $3,000 Border State Award, and only with a Level 2 award.
Mizzou Scholars / Columns Replaces These take the place of the automatic award. Columns Awards cannot be combined with any other MU grant or scholarship.
Stamps Replaces Covers the full cost of attendance, so other aid is adjusted to stay under that cap.
Portal / Departmental Awards Usually yes Donor and department awards from the Mizzou Scholarship Application Portal are the gap fillers, as long as total aid stays under cost of attendance.
Bright Flight (MO residents) Yes Mizzou lets the state’s Bright Flight scholarship ride on top of its merit awards.
Need-based grants Calculated after The Missouri Land Grant fills whatever tuition is left after other aid. It does not add on top. File the FAFSA by Feb. 1.

Out-of-state families should know one quirk: the Columns Awards start at $15,000, which is less than the $21,500 Level 1 automatic awards. Since Columns replaces rather than adds, it helps most for students who would otherwise land at Level 2.

❓ Flagship / Competitive Scholarship FAQs

What is the deadline for the Stamps Scholarship at Mizzou?
The Premier Scholars application is due December 1, and your student must already be admitted to Mizzou and the Honors College. The Honors College strongly encourages applying to both by November 1 so the scholarship application shows up in time.

How many students win Stamps?
Only a handful. About 100 quarter-finalists submit a video interview in mid-December, about 20 semi-finalists are invited to an on-campus interview weekend in February (families pay their own travel), and finalists are named around March 1. The class of 2030 has eight Stamps Scholars. International applicants are not currently considered.

Does the Mizzou Scholars Award need a separate application?
No. Mizzou dropped the supplemental application. The committee picks Missouri residents straight from the admission file, so a December 1 application and a transcript in by December 15 is all it takes. The award is $11,000 a year.

What is the difference between the Columns Award and the Columns Scholars Award?
Both are for out-of-state students, start at $15,000 a year and are picked at admission with no application. Columns considers geography, legacy and academics. Columns Scholars considers geography and academics. Columns Scholars requires a 3.25 college GPA to renew, while Columns requires 2.75.

Can my student get a competitive award and an automatic award?
No. Mizzou’s competitive awards replace the automatic award instead of adding to it.

What should students prepare for the Stamps application?
A 500 to 750 word essay and two recommendation letters, at least one from a teacher or counselor. Families can use our Essay Toolkit and Brag Sheet Builder to get organized.

🧠 Parent Strategy: Three Things Mizzou Will Not Do for You

Merit shows up on its own. These do not. If your student skips them, the money just goes to someone else.

  1. Open the Mizzou Scholarship Application Portal from the Application Status Page and finish the general application by December 1. (Mizzou retired ScholarshipUniverse, so ignore older advice that mentions it.)
  2. File the FAFSA by February 1. Missouri residents are not considered for the MU Grant or Missouri Land Grant without it, and both are decided in the freshman year.
  3. Send the ACT superscore to the state (code 2379) if your Missouri student’s best composite is a superscore. Bright Flight will not see it otherwise.

Parent translation: the automatic award is the floor. These are the steps that turn a $5,000 award into a much smaller bill.

💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

What is the Missouri Land Grant?
It covers whatever tuition and mandatory fees are left after Pell, state grants and select scholarships for Pell-eligible Missouri residents admitted as freshmen. It does not cover housing or meals. For Fall 2027 freshmen and later, it has to start in the first year. A student who becomes Pell eligible as a sophomore cannot pick it up.

Who gets the MU Grant?
Missouri residents admitted as first-time freshmen who file the FAFSA by the priority deadline. Mizzou evaluates it automatically using grades and financial information, and amounts vary. It is only offered at admission, so missing the FAFSA deadline as a senior can lock your student out for all four years.

How does Bright Flight work with Mizzou?
Bright Flight is Missouri’s state merit scholarship for residents scoring in the top 5 percent of state test takers. For recent classes that meant a 32+ ACT for up to $3,000 a year or a 30 to 31 for up to $1,000; the state resets cutoffs every fall. Mizzou lets it stack with merit. Scores have to be earned by the June after graduation.

What is the Boomba Tiger Scholarship?
A $5,000 award only for alumni of the Missouri Scholars Academy, the three-week summer program at Mizzou for gifted students before junior year. Students apply through the same Premier Scholars application used for Stamps, due December 1.

When is the Honors Housing Award due?
Mizzou lists two dates: February 15 on the award page and December 1 on the Honors admission page. Use December 1. The award covers a full year of Honors housing and dining for Pell-eligible students admitted to Honors.

Can current Mizzou students still earn scholarships?
Yes. The portal opens to continuing students each year (the continuing student deadline for 2027-28 is February 1), and programs like Deaton Scholars and ASH Scholars are open to students already on campus.

The Mizzou Honors College enrolls more than 3,000 students from nearly every major. The everyday perks are smaller classes, Honors advising, priority registration and priority Honors housing. Honors College FAQs (University of Missouri)

Is Mizzou Honors College admission automatic?
No. Students who meet the thresholds get access to the application, but they still submit a one to three page resume and a 500 to 750 word essay. Mizzou reviews holistically and says no score guarantees admission.

Can a test-optional student get into the Honors College?
Yes, with a 4.0 core GPA the application appears automatically. Below that, they can request one. Keep in mind the big Honors scholarships (Stamps, Brazeal, Discovery Fellows) do require a 32 ACT or 1420 SAT.

What does Discovery Fellows pay?
Starting in 2027-28, $7,000 a year, renewable for a second year, for about six to eight hours a week of research with a faculty mentor from the first semester. No prior research experience is needed.

What is the Brazeal Scholarship?
At least $15,000 a year for four years, plus $6,000 for study abroad and a freshman research placement. It requires a 32 ACT or 1420 SAT and comes through the Premier Scholars application.

Can out-of-state students win Honors scholarships?
Yes. Recent Stamps and Brazeal classes include students from Texas, Iowa, Nebraska, Tennessee, Hawaii and other states.

⭐ College Specialty

Mizzou is Missouri’s flagship, a big research university in a college town where student life still revolves around campus. Families tend to show up for one of two reasons: a specific program with a national name, or a strong merit package that makes a solid state school cheaper than staying home.

Nationally Known Program:
Missouri School of Journalism, founded in 1908 as the world’s first journalism school. Its “Missouri Method” puts students to work in real newsrooms, including a community newspaper and an NBC-affiliate TV station run out of the school. About one in ten Mizzou bachelor’s degrees is in journalism or communication, and journalism majors show up regularly among Stamps Scholars.
  • Business: The Trulaske College of Business is Mizzou’s largest source of bachelor’s degrees, about one in five.
  • Health professions and nursing: Health fields make up about 16% of degrees. The Sinclair School of Nursing and the College of Health Sciences benefit from MU Health Care, an academic medical center on campus.
  • Agriculture and animal sciences: As a land-grant university, Mizzou has a deep agriculture college (CAFNR) and a College of Veterinary Medicine, making it a natural fit for pre-vet and animal science students.
  • Engineering: About 7% of graduates, with biomedical, chemical, mechanical and industrial engineering well represented among recent top scholarship winners.
  • Research from day one: Programs like Discovery Fellows, Brazeal and ASH Scholars pay freshmen to work on real faculty research, which is unusual at a school this size.

✅ Wrapping It Up

Mizzou rewards the student who took the hard classes and did well in them. For the Fall 2027 class, test scores barely move the needle on most merit, so a kid with a strong core transcript and a modest ACT is in a better spot here than at most flagships.

Where Mizzou gets interesting is the out-of-state math. A student from a border county or with a Mizzou graduate parent can pull $21,500 a year, which turns a $55,000 sticker into something that competes with a home-state school. Missouri families have their own quiet advantages: Bright Flight on top of merit, and the Land Grant and MU Grant for families who file the FAFSA on time.

The whole plan comes down to December. Application in by the 1st, transcript in by the 15th, Honors and Premier Scholars applications submitted, and the scholarship portal filled out. Families who treat Thanksgiving as the real deadline almost always come out ahead.
