🤠 What Makes OSU Different for Families

OSU is Oklahoma’s land-grant university, and it recruits hard across state lines. In fall 2025 it admitted about 79% of out-of-state applicants and about 74% of Oklahoma applicants, and 38% of that freshman class came from outside Oklahoma. Admission is rolling, so there’s no admission deadline to sweat. The dates that actually move money are the scholarship deadlines: November 1 and February 1.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Oklahoma State (Read This First)

  • November 1 is the real scholarship deadline. Horizon Scholars, CEAT Scholars, McKnight (round 1) and the W.W. Allen application all key off November 1. February 1 is the last date for full consideration, and OSU wants a fresh transcript with fall grades by then.
  • You only get one “assured” award. OSU gives you the single highest award from its Assured and Partnered lists (Achievement, Academic Excellence, Rising Scholar, National Merit). The one exception: Oklahoma’s Promise and the Cowboy Covenant stack.
  • ACT superscores count. SAT superscores aren’t mentioned. OSU accepts official ACT superscore reports for scholarships. Its scholarship pages say nothing about superscoring the SAT, so plan on your best single SAT sitting.
  • Test-optional costs in-state families more. With no test score, an Oklahoma student tops out at $1,000 a year. An out-of-state student can still get $6,000 to $9,000. Rising Scholar, National Merit and McKnight all require a score.
  • The Academic Common Market replaces your Achievement award. It’s only a win when your Achievement award is less than the roughly $16,260 out-of-state portion of tuition.
  • The big competitive programs don’t combine. CEAT Scholars can’t be paired with Horizon, Thoma, McKnight or W.W. Allen, so pick the one that fits your student best.

💰 Cost of Attendance at Oklahoma State University: 2026–2027 Rates

Figures verified against official sources in October 2026.

📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest Oklahoma State University has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.

Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly $500 to $1,400 more than the in-state total below. $900 to $2,200 more than the out-of-state total below.

In-State: billed cost per year
$27,240
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $14,740
Housing & meals (typical) $12,500
Total billed cost $27,240
Out-of-State: billed cost per year
$43,500
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $31,000
Housing & meals (typical) $12,500
Total billed cost $43,500

That is $16,260 more per year than Oklahoma residents pay, before any waivers or scholarships.

Average federal net price: $19,561 per year. This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, for in-state students only, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.

Out-of-state families: this average does not include you. Run the college's own net price calculator for a number based on your situation.

📌 Regional Tuition & Waiver Options

Out-of-state freshmen are automatically considered for the Out-of-State Achievement Scholarship, a partial waiver of nonresident tuition worth $9,500 to $15,000 a year with a test score, or $6,000 to $9,000 a year on GPA alone. Residents of the 15 SREB states can use the Academic Common Market for approved majors, which waives the full out-of-state portion of tuition (about $16,260 a year) and replaces the Achievement award. Competitive programs like Horizon Scholars and McKnight Scholars also carry a full out-of-state tuition waiver.
Out-of-State Savings at OSU

The out-of-state “extra” at OSU is about $16,260 a year ($31,000 vs. $14,740 in tuition and fees). Most non-residents never pay all of it. The automatic Out-of-State Achievement Scholarship knocks off $9,500 to $15,000 a year with a test score, or $6,000 to $9,000 on GPA alone. Families from the 15 SREB states should also check the Academic Common Market (ACM), which waives the full out-of-state portion for approved majors. Horizon Scholars and McKnight Scholars include a full out-of-state waiver too.

FAQ: Cost of Attendance at Oklahoma State University

How much does OSU cost per year?
For 2026-2027, tuition, fees and on-campus housing and food run about $27,240 for Oklahoma residents and $43,500 for out-of-state students. OSU’s full budget, which adds books, transportation and personal costs, is $34,590 in-state and $50,850 out-of-state.

How much more do out-of-state students pay?
About $16,260 a year in tuition and fees. Housing and food cost the same for everyone. That’s why OSU’s out-of-state merit awards are written as “partial out-of-state tuition waivers”: they chip away at that $16,260 gap.

Can out-of-state students get in-state tuition at OSU?
Yes, through a few doors: the Academic Common Market for approved majors, Horizon Scholars, McKnight Scholars, the out-of-state National Merit package, and the Rising Scholar Institutional Nominee award. For most families, the automatic Achievement scholarship gets them most of the way there.

Is the average net price really around $19,561?
That’s the federal average for full-time freshmen who received grant or scholarship aid in 2023-24. Out-of-state families and families with no need-based aid often pay more. Strong students who land a big Achievement award or a Rising Scholar package can pay a lot less.

Do freshmen have to live on campus?
Yes. OSU requires all first-time freshmen to live in university housing unless they qualify for an exemption. Admitted students hold their spot with a $300 enrollment deposit, and $250 of it is refundable until May 1.

Will tuition go up next year?
OSU has already posted 2027-2028 estimates. Tuition and fees hold at $14,740 in-state and $31,000 out-of-state, and housing and food rise to about $12,710. Those are estimates until the regents finalize rates in the spring.

📅 OSU Scholarship Timeline (Simple Version)

  • August 1: Competitive scholarship applications open in the OSU application portal.
  • October 1: FAFSA opens. OSU’s school code is 003170.
  • November 1: Early Opportunity scholarship deadline. Application, résumé and test scores in.
  • February 1: Priority scholarship deadline. Everything in, including a new transcript with fall grades.
  • May 1: Accept your scholarships or they can be canceled.
  • Friday before classes: Final scholarship deadline for updated scores or transcripts.

Parent rule of thumb: treat November 1 as your real deadline. One OSU financial aid page lists June 1 as the acceptance date, but the main scholarship page says May 1, so plan on May 1.

Automatic Merit Scholarships at Oklahoma State University

Your admission application is your scholarship application. OSU places students on a grid using GPA and ACT/SAT, and there’s no separate form. OSU uses your highest cumulative GPA, weighted or unweighted, on a 4.0 scale, and it accepts official ACT superscores. Out-of-state awards are much larger than in-state awards because they work as partial waivers of nonresident tuition.

Automatic Merit FAQs (Oklahoma State University)

What’s the biggest automatic award for out-of-state students?
The Out-of-State Achievement Scholarship tops out at $15,000 a year ($60,000 over four years) for a 32+ ACT or 1420+ SAT with a 3.75+ GPA. The lowest test tier (24-25 ACT, 3.0 GPA) still pays $9,500 a year.

How much do Oklahoma residents get?
The in-state Academic Excellence Award runs from $1,000 to $3,000 a year depending on your test score and GPA. Students with unmet need on the FAFSA get an extra $250 or $500 a year on top.

Can my student get merit money without a test score?
Yes. Out-of-state students earn $6,000 (3.25 GPA), $7,000 (3.5 GPA) or $9,000 (3.75+ GPA) a year on GPA alone. In-state students get $750 or $1,000. If your student has a decent score, sending it almost always pays more.

What is the Rising Scholar Automatic Qualifier?
It’s Oklahoma’s top state merit program, formerly called Academic Scholars. Residents who score at or above the 99.5th percentile on the ACT or SAT get a five-year full tuition waiver plus state cash, worth up to $124,400. The State Regents set the exact cutoff each fall.

What is an Institutional Nominee?
OSU can nominate up to 45 freshmen a year to the Rising Scholar program. You need a 32 ACT and 3.5 GPA, or a 3.9 GPA with top 2% class rank, or a 3.9 GPA with a 30 ACT. OSU says recipients tend to apply early and have about a 33 ACT and 3.9 GPA. The package is worth up to $44,400 in-state or $97,300 out-of-state.

What does OSU give National Merit Finalists?
Finalists who name OSU as their first choice get a five-year full tuition waiver plus cash, worth up to $140,400 in-state and $154,500 out-of-state. For out-of-state students the waiver covers both the in-state and out-of-state portions of tuition.

What is the Cowboy Covenant?
It’s $1,000 a year for up to four years for Oklahoma’s Promise students who show financial need on the FAFSA. Together with Oklahoma’s Promise, which covers tuition, it’s the only combination that breaks OSU’s one-award rule.

Are these renewable?
Yes. The assured awards are four-year awards. Keep up full-time enrollment and the GPA your award letter lists, because renewal terms vary by award.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)

OSU’s automatic grid does the heavy lifting, but its competitive programs are where the big leadership packages live. Almost all of them run through one place: the Scholarships tab in your OSU application portal, which opens August 1. For the best shot, OSU wants the application, updated test scores, a leadership and involvement résumé, two essays and a video response in by November 1.

Here’s how it breaks down at the kitchen table. Horizon Scholars is open to any major. McKnight is for out-of-state leaders, especially kids from rural towns. CEAT Scholars and W.W. Allen are for engineering. Spears Scholar Leaders is for business. The President’s Distinguished Scholarship and President’s Leadership Council are picked straight from the admission application.

❓ Flagship / Competitive Scholarship FAQs

When are the competitive deadlines?
November 1 for Horizon Scholars, CEAT Scholars, McKnight round 1, and the OSU application for W.W. Allen (whose five essays are due December 1). McKnight has a second round on February 1. President’s Distinguished and PLC are considered from applications received by the February 1 priority deadline.

What does Horizon Scholars actually pay?
$7,500 a year for four years, plus a $5,000 study abroad award and a $5,000 internship stipend. Out-of-state Horizon Scholars also get in-state tuition. Your student is eligible with a 3.75 GPA or a 27 ACT (1260 SAT) or a nomination, in any major, including undecided.

Who should apply for McKnight?
Out-of-state students with real leadership and service records, especially from rural communities. It pays a full out-of-state tuition waiver plus $5,000 a year for four years. Even though OSU is test-optional, McKnight requires one ACT or SAT score.

My student wants engineering. CEAT Scholars or W.W. Allen?
CEAT Scholars (3.5 GPA, 30 ACT) pays $3,500 a year plus enrichment and travel, and includes an interview weekend December 5 and 6, 2026. W.W. Allen is the long shot: two students a year, a 32 ACT, top 5% class rank, $7,500 a year, and a funded master’s year at Cambridge. You can’t hold both.

Is there anything special for business majors?
Yes. Choose Business as your college on the OSU application and fill out the involvement and leadership section. That’s how Spears School scholarships, including the Spears Scholar Leaders program, are awarded. There’s no separate form.

What should students prepare?
A tight leadership and involvement résumé, two short essays and a video response. Families can use our Essay Toolkit and Brag Sheet Builder to get those organized before November.

🧠 Parent Strategy: Your Application Choices Are Scholarship Applications

At OSU, a lot of the smaller money gets decided by boxes your student checks on the admission application. Missing them doesn’t cost you admission, but it can quietly cost you scholarships.

  1. Pick an actual major and college. OSU’s academic college scholarships are based on the major you list.
  2. Fill out the leadership and involvement résumé completely, even if it feels optional.
  3. Look for the “Consider Research” section in the portal and apply for Freshman Research Scholars.
  4. If a parent or grandparent graduated from OSU, send the Alumni Legacy Certification Form.
  5. From an SREB state? Look up your major on OSU’s Academic Common Market list before you file the FAFSA.

Parent translation: the automatic grid covers tuition. These gems cover the books, the plane tickets home and the summer research stipend.

💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships

These awards aren’t automatic, and a few of them only matter for certain families. When they fit, they can be worth more than the automatic grid.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

Is the Academic Common Market worth it at OSU?
It depends on your Achievement award. ACM waives the whole out-of-state portion of tuition (about $16,260 a year), but it replaces your Achievement scholarship rather than adding to it. A student with a $15,000 Achievement award gains a little. A student on the $6,000 GPA-only award gains about $10,000 a year.

Does the Alumni Legacy Scholarship stack?
No. It’s $5,000 a year, and OSU gives you only your single highest assured award. It mainly helps out-of-state students whose Achievement amount would be below $5,000, like a 3.0 to 3.24 GPA with no test score.

What is Freshman Research Scholars?
A $1,000 one-year scholarship that puts first-year students in a real research project with a faculty mentor, in any major. Apply through “Consider Research” in the portal by November 1, with a final deadline of February 1.

Can non-music majors get band money?
Yes. OSU confirms that non-music majors can hold Cowboy Marching Band scholarships or out-of-state tuition waivers through the band program. Amounts aren’t published, so contact the Director of Bands early.

What about money after freshman year?
Wentz Research awards pay $6,000 for a one-year research project once your student has 12 OSU credit hours and a 3.0 GPA. Niblack Research Scholars pays $8,000 for lab research after 28 credit hours. Students can hold one or the other in a given year.

Is there help for first-generation students?
Yes. OSU’s RISE and TRIO Student Support Services programs offer scholarship opportunities for students who actively participate, along with mentoring and advising. Roughly 20 to 25% of OSU students are first-gen.

Honors College FAQs (Oklahoma State University)

Is Honors admission automatic?
It is if your student checks the box and has a 3.85 GPA, or a 3.75 GPA with a 27 ACT or 1260 SAT. Students below that line can still be admitted through the holistic review form.

Does Honors come with a scholarship?
Not by itself. OSU doesn’t publish an Honors-only award. The big Honors-linked money is Thoma Scholars and the Oklahoma State Scholars Society, both of which need separate selection.

Can out-of-state students join Honors?
Yes. The eligibility rules are the same for everyone. Only the Scholars Society is limited to Oklahoma residents.

Which counties qualify for Thoma?
In Oklahoma: Beaver, Cimarron, Dewey, Ellis, Harper, Major, Roger Mills, Texas, Woods and Woodward. In New Mexico: Curry, Lea, Quay, Roosevelt and Union. Plus 26 Texas Panhandle counties. Students from Beaver, Harper, Texas or Woods county attending a nearby Kansas high school also qualify.

What is the Honors College Degree?
It’s the top Honors award, earned with at least 30 honors credit hours across general education and your major, including a thesis. Graduates get a special diploma, a transcript notation, and they’re the only undergraduates who wear a hood at commencement.

⭐ College Specialty

Oklahoma State is the state’s land-grant university and an R1 research school, and it still acts like one. The programs it’s known for are hands-on and career-driven: agriculture, engineering, business and hospitality. Families who come for football weekends in Stillwater often leave impressed by how practical the academics are.

Nationally Known Program:
Ferguson College of Agriculture. OSU ranks its agriculture college No. 5 among the 2024 Best Colleges for Agricultural Sciences in America, and agriculture makes up about one in ten OSU bachelor’s degrees. Animal science is one of the most popular majors on campus and a common path for students headed to veterinary school.
  • Spears School of Business: AACSB-accredited and the biggest program at OSU, with about a quarter of all bachelor’s degrees awarded in business.
  • Engineering, Architecture and Technology (CEAT): strong in petroleum, agricultural and industrial engineering. In U.S. News’ 2026 graduate rankings, petroleum engineering placed No. 14 and biosystems and agricultural engineering No. 21. OSU’s architecture and architectural engineering programs are among its Academic Common Market draws for out-of-state students.
  • Hospitality and Tourism Management: ranked 11th in the U.S. in the 2024 ShanghaiRanking global subject rankings.
  • Aviation: Aerospace Administration and Operations and related aviation programs are a niche strength, and they appear on OSU’s Academic Common Market lists for several states.
  • Unusual majors worth a look: Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology, Agricultural Communications and Geospatial Information Science are programs many neighboring states don’t offer.

✅ Wrapping It Up

Big picture? Oklahoma State is one of the better deals in the region for out-of-state families. The automatic Achievement scholarship takes a real bite out of nonresident tuition, even on GPA alone, and OSU admits more out-of-state applicants than in-state ones by percentage. Oklahoma families get smaller automatic awards, but they also get Oklahoma’s Promise, the Cowboy Covenant and the Rising Scholar packages that out-of-state students can’t touch.

The catch is timing and choosing. Get everything in by November 1, because that’s when Horizon, CEAT Scholars and McKnight make their first cuts. Then pick the one big program that fits your student, because they don’t stack with each other. Do that, and a land-grant degree in agriculture, engineering, business or hospitality can cost a lot less than the sticker price suggests.
