🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at the University of Louisville (Read This First)
December 1 is the real scholarship deadline. Honors, the three mentored scholarships (Grawemeyer, MLK and McConnell) and UofL’s other competitive awards all close December 1, well before the regular admission date. Scores or grades that show up after December 1 may not count toward competitive review, so get testing done early in senior year.
No superscoring, for admission or for money. UofL uses your student’s best single test sitting. A great math score from June and a great reading score from September won’t be stitched together.
Test-optional merit comes with strings. Students can earn scholarships without a score, but only with a high weighted GPA and a real load of AP, IB, Cambridge or dual credit classes. Scores are only used when they help.
For out-of-state families, your zip code sets the price. Border Benefit, Regional Scholars and National Scholars are very different amounts, and your student gets one of them, not a combination. Starting Fall 2027, all of Tennessee qualifies for Border Benefit.
Two dates carry the money: admitted by April 1, FAFSA by February 15. Automatic awards are guaranteed only for students admitted by April 1. The need-based Cardinal Commitment Grant is locked at its first-year amount and requires the FAFSA by February 15 every single year.

Out-of-state families have more ways to shrink UofL's price than most flagships offer. Indiana Tuition Reciprocity: residents of Clark, Crawford, Floyd, Harrison, Perry, Scott and Washington counties in Indiana are billed the Kentucky in-state rate for approved programs. Border Benefit: first-time freshmen who live in or attend school in Illinois, the rest of Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia or West Virginia automatically receive an award that lowers tuition to the in-state rate. Starting with Fall 2027 entrants, all of Tennessee qualifies. FAQ: Cost of Attendance at the University of Louisville
Why does out-of-state cost about $16,000 more, and who actually pays that?
For 2026-27, full-time tuition is $13,614 for Kentucky residents and $29,960 for everyone else, a gap of $16,346. A lot of out-of-state families never pay that full gap. Students from seven Southern Indiana counties are billed the in-state rate, Border Benefit lowers tuition to the in-state rate for students from nearby states, Regional Scholars takes $12,000 to $16,000 off for several East Coast and California markets, and the Academic Common Market covers approved programs for SREB-state residents.
Which Indiana counties get in-state tuition at UofL?
Clark, Crawford, Floyd, Harrison, Perry, Scott and Washington counties. Students from those counties are billed the Kentucky rate for approved programs, which is why they aren’t eligible for Border Benefit. It’s a different deal, not a smaller one.
Does my student have to live on campus?
UofL has a first-year live-on policy and a second-year residential requirement. Students from commuter-eligible counties can live at home: in Kentucky that’s Bullitt, Hardin, Henry, Jefferson, Meade, Nelson, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer and Trimble, plus the seven Southern Indiana reciprocity counties. For a Louisville-area family, commuting is the single biggest way to cut the bill.
What’s the least expensive dorm, and is the housing figure above exact?
UofL’s projected 2026-27 rates run from $3,337 a semester for a Louisville Hall double to $3,986 for a Belknap Village double ($7,972 a year), with apartment-style options well above that. Meal plans are extra, and students in traditional halls are automatically assigned a standard plan. Treat the housing and meals number in the table as an estimate for a standard room and meal plan, not a quote.
Are there extra charges for certain majors?
Yes, and engineering is the big one. Speed School charges a differential fee of $40 per credit hour on most undergraduate engineering courses this year (it was $20), plus a $50 per semester technology and makerspace fee. The College of Business adds $75 per semester, and music majors pay a $175 fee. None of these show up in a basic tuition quote.
Can we trust UofL’s net price calculator?

How do Kentucky state grants fit in?
KEES and the need-based CAP Grant both count in UofL’s packaging. If your student receives a Pell Grant, a CAP Grant and KEES, UofL’s Cardinal Commitment Grant covers the rest of tuition. See our Kentucky aid page for how KEES is earned in high school.
Will tuition stay the same all four years?
No. Kentucky resident tuition went from $6,695 to $6,807 a semester this year, about 1.7%. Plan for small increases each year, and remember the Cardinal Commitment Grant is locked at its first-year amount, so it won’t grow with tuition.
