Here is the first thing most families don’t realize about the University of Delaware: it is Delaware’s flagship, but it doesn’t feel like a home-state school. About two out of every three first-year students come from out of state. That shapes everything about the money. UD has a published merit chart with real dollars for out-of-state students, an income-based promise for Delaware families, and a short list of invitation-only Honors awards at the top, including one genuine full ride.
The catch is that UD doesn’t publish cutoffs. You won’t find “3.7 GPA and 1300 SAT gets you Trustee.” UD recalculates your student’s GPA its own way and drops them into a tier, so the best you can do is know the ranges, apply early, and read the offer carefully when it comes.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at the University of Delaware (Read This First)
Nov 1 is the real money deadline. Honors College consideration, and with it the du Pont, Valencia and 1743 awards, only goes to students who apply Early Action by November 1. Apply in January and those doors are already closed.
Your GPA isn’t UD’s GPA. Merit tiers come from UD’s own GPA calculation, not the number on the transcript. Two students who look alike on paper can land in different tiers.
The first offer is the offer. UD says it leads with its best merit offer, and it does not take appeals for more merit money. Only need-based appeals are possible.
Outside scholarships can shrink UD aid. UD applies outside money to unmet need first, then loans, and then it can reduce UD aid. It also warns that merit may be reduced if an outside award is meant to cover tuition.
Some majors cost more than the sticker. For students admitted from Fall 2025 on, UD adds a yearly differential charge: Engineering $4,000, Business $3,000, Nursing $2,500, Honors College $2,000 and Music $1,250. It isn’t in the basic cost table.
Delaware families: file the FAFSA even if you think you earn too much. First State Promise covers full tuition and fees under $75,000 in family income, and there is no other form to fill out.

Two Things the Table Doesn’t Show
First, the table covers what UD bills you directly. UD’s full cost of attendance adds books, transportation and personal costs, which brings a 2026-2027 year to about $39,154 for Delaware residents and $65,884 for out-of-state students. Second, some majors carry a yearly differential charge on top of tuition (Engineering $4,000, Business $3,000, Nursing $2,500, Honors $2,000, Music $1,250 for students admitted Fall 2025 or later). How much more does an out-of-state student pay at UD?
About $26,700 more a year in direct costs. Tuition is $15,740 for Delaware residents and $42,470 for everyone else, and both pay the same $2,550 in fees and the same housing and food rates. UD’s out-of-state merit chart exists to close part of that gap, which is why the out-of-state merit amounts are so much bigger than the in-state ones.
Does UD offer an out-of-state tuition discount or reciprocity?
Not in any broad way. UD takes part in the Academic Common Market, but only for one major (Latin and Iberian Studies) and only for students from Louisiana and Virginia. For almost everyone else, the discount is merit.
What is a differential charge, and will my student pay one?
It’s an extra yearly charge for programs that cost more to teach. For students admitted starting Fall 2025, it’s $4,000 for Engineering, $3,000 for Business, $2,500 for Nursing, $2,000 for the Honors College and $1,250 for Music majors. A Business major in the Honors College would pay both.
Is the average net price of about $17,800 realistic for us?

We live in Delaware. Could UD be close to free?
Possibly. Under First State Promise, Delaware freshmen with family income under $35,000 get a package covering tuition, fees, standard housing and food, and families between $35,000 and $75,000 get full tuition and mandatory fees covered. You only need the FAFSA. Assets over $50,000 (not counting your home) can affect it. Details are in the Hidden Gems section below.
How much does tuition go up each year?
From 2025-2026 to 2026-2027, in-state tuition rose about 3% and out-of-state tuition about 4%. UD merit awards are set dollar amounts per year, so the bill can creep up a little each year even when the scholarship stays the same. Budget for it.
What if my student commutes from home?
UD estimates a Delaware commuter’s full cost of attendance at about $27,210 for 2026-2027. Keep in mind that need-based aid can be lower for students living at home, because their cost of attendance is lower.
November 1: Early Action deadline. This is the only way in for Honors College and the Distinguished Scholar awards (du Pont, Valencia, 1743).
January 15: Regular deadline. Every admitted student is still reviewed for automatic merit, but the Honors and Distinguished Scholar doors are closed.
Late January: Honors College invitations go out. Selected Honors admits are invited to campus to interview for the top scholarships.
Late February: Delaware’s B. Bradford Barnes full ride closes (state application, Delaware seniors only).

Automatic Merit Scholarships at the University of Delaware
Every admitted first-year student is reviewed for merit automatically, with no separate application. UD places students into one of five tiers using its own recalculated GPA and everything in the application, and it publishes no hard cutoffs. Out-of-state amounts are much larger than in-state amounts because they’re built to offset non-resident tuition. Testing is optional; if your student submits scores, UD superscores the SAT and uses the highest single ACT composite.

Do we need to fill out a scholarship application?
No. The admission application is the scholarship application. UD reviews every admitted first-year student for merit using what’s in the file.
What GPA or test score gets the Trustee Scholarship?
UD doesn’t say. There are no published cutoffs for any tier, and UD calculates its own GPA rather than using the one on the transcript. The honest answer is that the strongest students in the admit pool land Trustee, and everyone else lands somewhere on the chart below it.
Do test scores matter for merit if UD is test-optional?
Submitting is optional for admission, and UD says merit is based on all the materials in the application. It doesn’t publish how scores affect tier placement. UD’s three biggest scholarships, the Eugene du Pont, Marichu C. Valencia and 1743 awards, are invitation only. There’s no form. The path is: apply Early Action by November 1, say Yes to Honors College consideration, get admitted to Honors, and then hope for an invitation to interview on campus. UD says it’s looking for students who show leadership potential and a high degree of intellectual curiosity.
The du Pont is the prize: a true four-year full ride covering tuition, standard room and board, and comprehensive and student center fees, plus a textbook stipend and an enrichment grant, and it’s open to out-of-state students as well as Delawareans.
Valencia and 1743 need a closer look, because the headline numbers are four-year totals, not yearly amounts. Here’s what they work out to per year:

How do we apply for the Barnes full ride?

Is there a separate Honors application?
No. Your student answers the Honors question on the UD application and applies Early Action by November 1. UD reviews every Early Action applicant who says Yes and invites qualified students after admission.
What if we apply Regular Decision?
Then your student won’t be considered for Honors as an incoming freshman, and that also takes the du Pont, Valencia and 1743 awards off the table. This is the single most expensive deadline mistake at UD.
Does joining Honors come with a scholarship?
Not automatically. The main Honors money is the invitation-only Distinguished Scholar awards. Other Honors funding is enrichment money for things like research and internships, not tuition. And Honors adds a $2,000 yearly charge.
Can out-of-state students get into Honors?
Yes. Honors is open to all applicants, and out-of-state Distinguished Scholars get the larger Valencia and 1743 amounts.

The University of Delaware is a research university with roots going back to 1743, and for a mid-sized flagship it has some surprisingly specialized strengths. A few of them are among the best in the country, and one or two you will struggle to find anywhere else. If your student is interested in any of these, UD deserves a serious look regardless of where you live.
Nationally Known Program: Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering: UD’s chemical engineering program is consistently ranked among the very best in the nation, including at the undergraduate level, in a state whose economy was built on the chemical industry. For a student set on chemical engineering, this is a top-tier program at a public school’s price. Remember the $4,000 yearly engineering differential charge when you run the numbers.
Hospitality Business Management: UD’s hospitality program in the Lerner College of Business is ranked among the top in the U.S. Students run Vita Nova, an on-campus fine-dining restaurant, and rotate through jobs at the Courtyard Newark hotel right on campus.
Art Conservation: One of only a handful of undergraduate art conservation programs in the country, and UD’s is taught by working professional conservators. It mixes chemistry, art history and studio work, and it’s a pipeline to graduate programs in museum and conservation work.
Marine and Earth Sciences: The College of Earth, Ocean and Environment offers majors in marine science, environmental science, meteorology and climate science, and more, with a marine campus in Lewes on the Delaware coast.
Nursing and Health Sciences: A popular, career-focused path. Nursing carries a $2,500 yearly differential charge.
Public Policy: The Biden School of Public Policy and Administration offers a B.A. in public policy for students interested in government, nonprofits and public service.
World Scholars: A four-year program that starts with a first semester abroad in Rome, Madrid, Athens, Auckland or Newcastle (engineering), plus a second semester abroad later. Tuition is the same as Newark, but there’s a $9,500 program fee for the semester abroad, and your aid package applies.

The University of Delaware is really two different deals depending on your zip code. For Delaware families, it can be one of the best values in the country: First State Promise covers tuition and fees under $75,000 in family income, the Flex Pathway campuses offer a tuition-free start, and the state even funds a full ride. For out-of-state families, UD competes with a published merit chart worth up to $15,000 a year, and that gap matters, because out-of-state tuition is more than $26,000 higher.
Either way, the move that matters most is the same: apply Early Action by November 1 and say Yes to Honors. That one date decides whether your student is in the running for the du Pont full ride and the other Distinguished Scholar awards. After that, file the FAFSA, read the merit offer carefully (UD doesn’t negotiate it), and ask before you let an outside scholarship quietly replace UD money. If your student is headed for chemical engineering, hospitality or art conservation, UD is a school worth fighting for.
