The catch is that everything runs on one date. March 1 is when the admission application, the transcripts, and the scholarship portal application all have to be in. 🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at UNT (Read This First)

  • The merit grid runs on unweighted GPA. Your student’s 4.4 weighted GPA is not the number UNT uses. Pull the unweighted figure off the official transcript before you assume anything about which box you land in.
  • Class rank is half the formula. A 3.9 unweighted student outside the top 25% of their class gets nothing from the Excellence grid. At a competitive high school this catches families completely off guard. Only about 39% of UNT’s enrolled freshmen were in the top quarter of their class.
  • Test-optional for admission, but scores still pay. A 30 ACT or 1350 SAT adds $1,000 a year on top of your Excellence award. UNT does not superscore, so it has to come from one sitting, and official scores have to arrive by July 1, four months after everything else is due.
  • Out-of-state families: $1,000 is the magic number. Any competitive UNT scholarship of $1,000 or more drops you to the in-state tuition rate. That is worth roughly $12,840 a year, more than the largest merit award UNT hands out. Even the smallest $1,000 Achievement Scholarship triggers it.
  • Selective Service compliance is required for that waiver. Texas law ties it to registration. It is a box most families never think about until the money is on the line.
  • An $8,000 Excellence award is a side door into the Honors College. Land at $8,000, $10,000, or $12,000 and you are admitted to Honors automatically with no Honors application. Almost nobody knows this.

📌 Regional Tuition & Waiver Options

The Texas Competitive Scholarship Waiver is the single biggest cost lever for non-Texas families at UNT. If your student receives a competitive UNT scholarship worth $1,000 or more for the academic year, they pay the in-state tuition rate instead of the non-resident rate for that year, including the following summer.

In 2026-2027 terms that is roughly $12,840 a year in savings, which is larger than the biggest automatic merit award UNT gives. And the trigger is low: even the $1,000 UNT Achievement Scholarship qualifies.

Two things to watch. Students must meet Selective Service requirements to receive the waiver (Texas Education Code 51.9095), and the waiver must be maintained by keeping the underlying scholarship. The waiver also does not cover the Out-of-State Teaching Fee charged to non-residents who take UNT courses while living outside Texas.

FAQ — Cost of Attendance at the University of North Texas

Why is out-of-state tuition roughly double the in-state rate?
Texas taxpayers subsidize the in-state rate, and non-residents do not get that subsidy. But UNT is unusual here. The Texas Competitive Scholarship Waiver means a non-resident who earns any UNT competitive scholarship of $1,000 or more pays the in-state rate for that year. That is the whole gap, closed by a fairly small award.

Is the $1,000 waiver threshold really that easy to hit?
For most admitted students, yes. Any Excellence Scholarship qualifies, and the smallest one is $2,000. Even students who miss the Excellence grid entirely are automatically evaluated for the $1,000 Achievement Scholarship, which clears the bar exactly. The requirement is that it be a competitive scholarship of at least $1,000 for the academic year, and that you keep meeting the terms to renew it.

Does the waiver cover online courses?
No, and this trips people up. Non-residents who take UNT courses while living outside Texas are charged an Out-of-State Teaching Fee instead of tuition and instructional fees, and the competitive scholarship waiver does not touch that fee. The waiver is built for students who actually move to Denton.

Do all majors cost the same?
Mostly, but not entirely. The G. Brint Ryan College of Business carries a $15 per credit hour differential tuition rate for undergraduates, and starting Fall 2026 that also applies to merchandising, hospitality, and tourism programs. Music and lab sciences can carry their own course fees. Budget a little extra if your student is heading into one of those.

Does my student have to live on campus freshman year?
Generally yes. UNT requires first-year undergraduates who enrolled the semester after high school graduation and are taking 9 or more hours to live on campus. Commuter exemptions exist and are reviewed case by case through UNT Housing. Plan on the on-campus housing and food figure for year one.

Why is the average net price so much lower than the sticker total?
Because almost nobody pays sticker. Between the automatic Excellence and Achievement awards, the TEXAS Grant, Pell, and UNT’s own grant funds, most Texas families land well under the published number. The federal average net price reflects what families actually paid after grants and scholarships, with no loans counted.

Do scholarship amounts go up as tuition goes up?
No. Your Excellence award is a fixed dollar figure that stays flat for up to four years while tuition and housing tend to drift up each year. Build a small annual increase into your four-year plan rather than assuming today’s gap is the gap you will have as a senior.

📅 The UNT Timeline (Simple Version)

  • October to January: Apply for admission. Earlier is better, because funding is limited and priority goes to the earliest applicants.
  • January 12: Terry Foundation Scholarship application closes. This one is weeks ahead of everything else.
  • January 15: FAFSA or TASFA priority date.
  • February 15: The date that matters if your family might qualify for Emerald Eagle Scholars.
  • March 1: The big one. Admission, transcripts, and the General Scholarship Application in the Eagle Scholarship Portal all due.

🎯 The Easiest $4,000 Most Families Leave on the Table

If your student qualifies for any Excellence Scholarship and can produce a 30 ACT or 1350 SAT, UNT adds a flat $1,000 per year on top. That is $4,000 over four years for submitting a score. Two things to know: UNT does not superscore, so it has to come from one test date, and the score has to be officially submitted by July 1, months after your student has already accepted their offer. Fewer than 1 in 10 enrolled UNT freshmen even submit an ACT score, so this money is sitting there.

Which GPA does UNT actually use?
The unweighted GPA on your official high school transcript, standardized to a 4.0 scale. Not weighted, not the one on your student’s report card app. Pull the transcript and check before you predict a box.

What if my student’s school does not rank?
UNT will make the scholarship determination from the unweighted GPA and a review of the academic record. You lose the precision of the grid, but you are not shut out.

Are these guaranteed?
Close, but UNT is careful with its wording. Excellence and Achievement are described as competitive merit awards subject to available funding, with priority to the earliest applicants. In practice the grid is the grid, but the honest advice is to apply in the fall, not in late February.

Can they stack?
You receive one Excellence award, not several. But the test score bonus stacks on top of it, and both stack with departmental awards, donor scholarships, state grants, and federal aid up to your total cost of attendance.

What does it take to keep the award?
Continuous fall and spring enrollment with at least 12 UNT hours per semester, a 3.00 cumulative UNT GPA, and 24 completed UNT hours each academic year. UNT recommends 15 hours a semester so students actually finish in four years, since the award runs out at eight semesters.

When do we have to accept?
By May 1. Instructions come with the award notice through your student’s EagleConnect email, so have them check it. A surprising number of offers expire in an unopened inbox.

Does the merit award help with housing?
Indirectly. It applies to your bill, and your bill includes housing and meals if you live on campus. But nothing here is earmarked for housing, and freshmen are generally required to live on campus, so budget the full living expenses figure.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)

UNT’s competitive tier is small but the top of it is enormous. There is no broad essay-and-interview scholarship program the way you would find at a school like Alabama or Oklahoma. Instead there are three full-ride paths, each with a narrow and specific gate, plus a large pool of smaller donor awards that anyone can apply for with a single application. If your student clears one of the three gates, UNT becomes one of the least expensive good options in the country.

They are not ranked by prestige. They are ranked by which door your student can actually walk through.

  • National Merit Finalist leads to the UNT Meritorious Scholarship. The only requirement past Finalist status is naming UNT as your first choice with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. No committee, no competition against other applicants. UNT publishes four-year values of $128,000 for Texas residents and $177,000 for non-residents, covering tuition, mandatory fees, on-campus housing and a seven-day meal plan, textbooks, and an annual stipend.   • Terry Foundation Scholarship is for Texas students with a leadership record and financial need. It is a last-dollar award covering the full cost of attendance including books and on-campus living. UNT nominates a shortlist to the Terry Foundation, which makes the final selections.
  • Texas Leadership Scholars is a statewide program run through the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. About 250 students are chosen across every participating Texas public university each year. It covers all board-designated tuition and fees plus a housing and food scholarship.

All three also carry automatic Honors College admission at UNT. And all three are Texas-only except the Meritorious Scholarship, which is open to anyone who reaches Finalist.

Two that deserve a second look
  • Emerald Eagle Scholars is the largest award on this list and it has no application at all. If you are a Texas family at or under $65,000 in total income and TEXAS Grant eligible, UNT identifies you from your admission file and your FAFSA and invites you. The UNT Honors College works differently from most, and the difference is worth money. At a lot of schools Honors is a separate application you either win or lose. If you are a Texas family with real financial need, Emerald Eagle Scholars covers tuition and fees for four years and requires no application at all, just a February 15 admission file and a March 15 FAFSA. And if you live outside Texas, one $1,000 scholarship drops you to the in-state rate, which is a bigger swing than any merit award on the page. Only about 4% of UNT’s freshmen come from out of state, which tells you how few families have run that math.

The practical advice is simple. Pull the unweighted GPA and the class rank off the official transcript and find your box on the grid. Work your calendar backward from January 12, not March 1. Have your student open the Eagle Scholarship Portal and answer every question in it, including the Honors checkbox. And if a 30 ACT is within reach, get it and submit it by July 1, because that is $4,000 for a test score you may already be close to.
