💡 How Hopkins Pays for Students (the 60-second version)

Hopkins is need-blind for U.S. applicants, meets 100% of demonstrated need, and does not put loans in its aid packages. Starting with 2026-27, families earning up to $200,000 pay no tuition, and families earning up to $100,000 pay nothing at all. About half of undergraduates get need-based aid, and Hopkins says over 80% graduate debt-free. Merit money exists, but it is tiny by comparison: a few dozen awards a year, chosen from the admission file.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Johns Hopkins (Read This First)

  • Merit swaps out need aid. Hopkins applies a merit award first, then fills the gap with need-based money. If your family already qualifies for aid, a Hodson award mostly changes the label on the money, not the total you pay.
  • The income tiers assume “typical” assets. Savings and investments above about three times your income can shrink the offer. Retirement accounts and the equity in your home do not count.
  • Testing is required again. Recent class profiles were test-optional, but this cycle requires the SAT or ACT. Hopkins superscores both.
  • Outside scholarships have a ceiling. The first $4,500 a first-year wins replaces summer savings and work-study. Anything above that lowers the Hopkins grant dollar for dollar. Pell and state grants work the same way once need is fully met.
  • Miss the aid deadline, lose the guarantee. The CSS Profile and FAFSA are due Nov 15 (Early Decision I) or Jan 15 (Early Decision II and Regular Decision). Maryland families also need the FAFSA in by March 1 for state grants.
  • International students get one shot. If they do not apply for aid at admission, they can never apply later.
  • The Tuition Promise skips Peabody. It covers the arts and sciences and engineering schools only. Peabody Conservatory has its own aid program.

FAQ

Is this college test-optional? No. Johns Hopkins University is test-required for admission.

Do you need test scores for scholarships at Johns Hopkins University? Hopkins has no automatic merit, but SAT or ACT scores are required for admission again and every merit award is picked from the admission file. Hopkins superscores both tests.

What is the middle 50% ACT/SAT? ACT: 35; SAT: 1530-1565.

Average net price? About $18,809/year after aid.

Does this school use waivers/reciprocity? No. It is a private school, so everyone pays the same rate.

💰 Cost of Attendance at Johns Hopkins University: 2026–2027 Rates

Figures verified against official sources in November 2026.

📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest Johns Hopkins University has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.

Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly $1,800 to $4,500 more than the total below.

✔ Same price for every student, no matter which state you live in.

All students: billed cost per year
$90,637
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $68,670
Housing & meals (typical) $21,967
Total billed cost $90,637

Average federal net price: $18,809 per year. This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.

🎯 What Families Actually Pay: The Johns Hopkins Tuition Promise (2026-27)

Hopkins published its own chart of typical costs by family income. These assume typical assets and are what most families in each band pay per year.

Family Income Typical Hopkins Scholarship Typical Parent Cost
Up to $100,000$91,000$0
$100,000 to $125,000$75,000$13,000
$125,000 to $150,000$68,000$19,000
$150,000 to $200,000$65,000$22,000
$200,000 to $250,000$45,000$43,000
$250,000 to $300,000$33,000$54,000
$300,000 to $350,000$28,000$61,000
$350,000+$21,000$66,000

Above $100,000, students are also expected to cover about $1,800 a year in personal costs. Hopkins treats these bands as guidelines, so aid tapers off gradually rather than dropping off a cliff at each line. This table replaces the federal net price shown above for most families, since that federal figure was measured before the Tuition Promise started.

🧾 What the Table Above Leaves Out
  • One-time $500 matriculation fee in the first year.
  • Student health insurance: $3,624 a year, billed automatically unless you waive it with your own coverage.
  • Books ($1,377), personal costs ($1,606), and travel ($738) are in Hopkins’ budget but never show up on the bill. Total first-year cost of attendance is $94,858.
  • Housing goes up after freshman year. Sophomore on-campus housing runs $14,444 versus $13,073 for first-years. Moving off campus later usually costs less, and the aid offer adjusts.

FAQ: Cost of Attendance at Johns Hopkins

Is Johns Hopkins really tuition-free for families under $200,000?
Yes, starting with the 2026-27 year, as long as your family has typical assets and you file the CSS Profile and FAFSA on time. Under $200,000 your remaining costs are mainly housing, food, and personal expenses. Under $100,000 Hopkins covers those too, so parents pay $0.

What does Hopkins mean by “typical assets”?
Generally, savings and investments worth less than three times your annual income. Cash, brokerage accounts, college savings plans, second homes, and business value count. Your primary home’s equity and retirement accounts like 401(k)s and IRAs do not.

Do Maryland residents pay less at Johns Hopkins?
No. Hopkins is private and charges everyone the same $68,670 tuition. Maryland families can add state grants by filing the FAFSA by March 1, but for students whose need is already fully met, those grants replace Hopkins money rather than adding to it.

Why is the federal net price $18,809 if so many families pay less?
That number comes from federal data on past students, collected before the Tuition Promise began. It is a backward-looking average. The income table above is the better guide for a student starting in fall 2027.

Will my aid drop if my income goes up next year?
Possibly, since U.S. families reapply every year. Hopkins says it takes a big jump to matter. Its own example is a family going from $90,000 to $110,000 whose aid would not change.

Will we have to take out loans?
Hopkins does not include loans in its aid offers. Families can still borrow by choice, and Hopkins offers a no-interest payment plan to spread the bill out.

Does financial aid cover summer classes?
Not the same way. Hopkins meets full need for fall and spring only. Summer aid is limited and goes to the students with the highest need first.

📅 Hopkins Money Timeline (Simple Version)

  • Early fall of senior year: QuestBridge National College Match application (low-income students only).
  • November 15: CSS Profile and FAFSA due for Early Decision I applicants.
  • January 15: CSS Profile and FAFSA due for Early Decision II and Regular Decision. Current students refile by this date too.
  • March 1: FAFSA deadline for Maryland state grants (Maryland residents only).

Parent rule of thumb: file the aid forms with the application, even if you think you earn too much. At Hopkins the forms are the scholarship application.

Automatic Merit Scholarships: Johns Hopkins University

Johns Hopkins does not offer automatic merit scholarships. There is no GPA or test score that earns a guaranteed award. The closest thing Hopkins has to “automatic” money is the Tuition Promise: if your family’s income and assets fall in the right range and you file on time, the aid follows. You will find those guarantees in the Hidden Gems section below.

Residency
Based on published cutoffs for entering freshmen. Always verify with the college before finalizing plans.

This institution does not offer designated Automatic Merit scholarships at this time.

Note: Any state grant cards that appear here come from your home state’s programs. At Hopkins, state grants and Pell count toward your package, so for students whose need is already fully met they replace Hopkins money instead of lowering what you pay.

Automatic Merit: FAQs (Johns Hopkins)

Does Johns Hopkins give automatic scholarships for high test scores?
No. Every Hopkins merit award is chosen by a committee from the admission file. A perfect SAT does not trigger any guaranteed money on its own.

Then what is guaranteed?
Need-based aid. Hopkins meets 100% of demonstrated need, charges no tuition to families earning up to $200,000, and asks $0 from parents earning up to $100,000, assuming typical assets.

Do test scores affect financial aid at Hopkins?
Not directly. Scores are required for admission and are part of the file merit committees read, but need-based aid is based only on your finances.

Do I need to apply separately for Hodson, Westgate, or Clark?
No. All first-year applicants are considered automatically, and winners hear with their admission decision. There is no appeal if you are not chosen.

We live in Maryland. Is there anything extra to do?
Yes. File the FAFSA by March 1 to be considered for Maryland grants, since that date is later than Hopkins’ own deadline and easy to forget once you think you are done.

Does aid renew automatically?
For U.S. students, no. You refile the FAFSA and CSS Profile every year. International students apply once, and their aid stays at the same level for four years.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)

Hopkins runs a small set of named merit awards, all picked at admission with no separate application: the Hodson Trust (fewer than 20 a year), the full-tuition Westgate (up to 2 engineers a year), the Clark Scholars engineering cohort, and the need-plus-merit Hodson-Gilliam. Here is the part most families miss: Hopkins applies merit first and then fills the rest with need-based aid. If you already qualify for need-based help, a merit award mostly replaces Hopkins money you would have gotten anyway.

✅ Can You Stack Scholarships at Hopkins?

Aid Type Lowers What You Pay? Hopkins Parent Translation
Merit (Hodson, Westgate, Clark) Mostly for families above the aid range Merit is applied first, then need-based money fills the gap. For aided families it usually swaps one kind of Hopkins money for another.
Hodson-Gilliam Somewhat Part of it replaces the first-year work-study expectation, so your student does not have to earn that piece.
Outside scholarships Up to $4,500 (first-years) The first $4,500 replaces summer savings and work-study ($5,300 for returning students). Above that, the Hopkins grant shrinks dollar for dollar.
Pell, state grants, ROTC Usually not If your need is already fully met, these replace Hopkins money dollar for dollar. Your total aid stays the same.
GI Bill / Yellow Ribbon Yes, for tuition At the 100% level, the VA and Hopkins cover full tuition. VA money does not reduce the parent contribution in a need-based package.

Bottom line: at Hopkins, the big money is need-based and it is very generous. Treat a merit award as a bonus that matters most to families who would not qualify for need-based aid, and do not turn down a strong need-based offer elsewhere expecting Hopkins merit to close a gap.

Johns Hopkins does not publish the dollar amount, and third-party figures disagree, so we list it as varies. Renews for four years with a 3.0 GPA, and the amount stays the same every year.

💡
Strategic Detail
Johns Hopkins says merit money is applied first and the need-based Hopkins Scholarship fills whatever gap is left. For a family that already qualifies for need-based aid, winning Hodson mostly swaps out Hopkins need money instead of lowering the bill. It moves the bottom line most for families above the aid range. Winners join the Hodson Scholars Program (cohort events, peer mentoring, a leadership team, and Baltimore service projects). There is no appeal process for merit decisions.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
Most winners: Fewer than 20 first-years a year out of about 50,000 applicants. Winners stand out on leadership and community impact, because nearly every admitted student already has top grades and a 1530+ SAT. Funded by the A. James and Alice B. Clark Foundation. Johns Hopkins does not publish the amount. Its own pages disagree on what kind of award this is: the financial aid and admissions lists call it need-based (renewable for up to three more years), while the Clark page calls it a merit scholarship. The Match mainly changes timing and adds a binding commitment.

❓ Flagship / Competitive Scholarship FAQs

How many Hodson Trust Scholarships does Hopkins give?
Fewer than 20 a year to incoming first-years. The award renews for four years with a 3.0 GPA, and the amount stays the same. Hopkins does not publish the dollar figure.

Who gets the Westgate Scholarship?
Up to two entering engineering students a year, chosen for an outstanding record plus things like independent research, science fair results, and leadership. It covers full tuition for four years with a 3.0 GPA in the engineering school.

What does being a Clark Scholar involve?
Clark Scholars are engineering students (U.S. citizens or permanent residents) who take Clark courses every year in design, leadership, and business, plus summer sessions before freshman year. They need a 2.8 GPA to keep it. Hopkins’ own pages describe it both as merit and as need-based, so expect it to work inside your aid package.

Can we appeal if we don’t get a merit scholarship?
No. Hopkins awards all merit scholarships at the time of admission and says there is no appeal process. You can appeal a need-based aid offer, though.

Is Hopkins a QuestBridge partner?
Yes. For the National College Match, Hopkins most strongly considers families earning $80,000 or less with typical assets. A match is binding and comes with a full four-year scholarship.

Does Johns Hopkins offer National Merit or Stamps scholarships?
No. Hopkins is not a National Merit college sponsor and not a Stamps partner. National Merit Finalists can still win the one-time $2,500 award or a corporate award from the National Merit organization and bring it to Hopkins as an outside scholarship.

How should my student prepare?
Since merit is chosen from the admission file, the essay and activities carry the weight. Our Essay Toolkit and Brag Sheet Builder help organize leadership and community work, which is exactly what Hodson readers look for.

🧠 Parent Strategy: “We Make Too Much” Is the Most Expensive Assumption at Hopkins

Hopkins’ best money is hiding behind two forms most middle-income families never file. A family earning $180,000 with normal savings pays no tuition here, but only if Hopkins sees the paperwork.

  1. Run the Hopkins Net Price Calculator with your tax return in hand.
  2. File the CSS Profile (code 5332) and FAFSA (code E00473) by Nov 15 for Early Decision I or Jan 15 for Early Decision II and Regular Decision.
  3. Watch for IDOC emails asking for tax documents, and upload them quickly.
  4. Maryland families: file the FAFSA by March 1 for state grants.

Parent translation: the aid forms are the scholarship application at Hopkins. Skip them and the Tuition Promise cannot reach you.

💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships

These aren’t the merit awards you hear about, but they are where most Hopkins families actually save money: income-based guarantees, a full-ride program for city public school grads, a match on Maryland’s biggest state grant, and a free summer head start for first-gen students.

Strategic Detail
Income tiers are guidelines, not hard cutoffs, and aid phases down gradually. Johns Hopkins' typical cost chart shows a family earning $150,000 to $200,000 paying about $22,000 a year (mostly housing and food), plus about $1,800 the student covers. Assets above three times income can reduce the offer. Johns Hopkins' own FAQ still quotes tuition as "$66k," but 2026-27 tuition is $68,670.

Johns Hopkins' policy is that state grants for students whose need is already fully met replace Hopkins-funded money dollar for dollar, with total aid unchanged. Expect the state grant and the match to change the mix of your package more than the total.

Strategic Detail
Johns Hopkins states it provides a matching award to every Guaranteed Access Grant recipient. Missing the March 1 FAFSA date forfeits the state grant, and the match with it.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
Most winners: Low-income Maryland families who file the FAFSA by March 1. The miss is filing late because Hopkins' own aid deadline came first and the family thought it was done.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

Who qualifies for the Cummings Scholars Program?
Graduates of Baltimore City or Washington, DC public or public charter high schools who lived in the city and attended its public schools for at least 10th through 12th grade. Families under $100,000 get full cost of attendance plus a $1,500 startup grant each year. Families from $100,000 to $200,000 pay no more than 10% of income. Admitted students who qualify become Cummings Scholars automatically.

Does Hopkins really match Maryland’s Guaranteed Access Grant?
Yes, Hopkins says it matches the grant for every recipient. Just know that for students whose need is already fully met, state grants replace Hopkins money, so the match changes the mix of your package more than the total.

What is Hop-In, and how does my student get in?
A free five-week summer program on campus for about 40 incoming first-generation, limited-income students, with housing, meals, and three credit-bearing courses. There is no application. Hopkins invites students based on their admission file, so answer the first-generation questions accurately.

If my student wins outside scholarships, do we get to keep them?
The first $4,500 for a first-year (or $5,300 for a returning student) replaces the summer savings and work-study expectations. Beyond that, Hopkins lowers its own grant dollar for dollar, so the total aid stays the same. Report every outside award to Student Financial Support.

Do the Tuition Promise guarantees apply to current students and transfers?
Yes. Current Krieger and Whiting undergraduates were moved to the new structure for 2026-27, and domestic transfer students qualify too. Peabody undergraduates use Peabody’s separate aid program.

Honors Programs at Johns Hopkins

Johns Hopkins does not have an honors college or a campus-wide honors program. At a school where the typical admitted student already has a 1530+ SAT and near-perfect grades, the whole undergraduate experience works like an honors track. What Hopkins does have are a few selective cohorts that come with their own funding and mentoring, and those are worth knowing about.

  • Hodson Scholars Program: the community every Hodson Trust and Hodson-Gilliam winner joins, with peer mentoring, a leadership team, and Baltimore service projects. Chosen at admission.
  • Clark Scholars and Cummings Scholars: cohort programs with faculty mentors and required programming, covered in the sections above.
  • University Undergraduate Research Fellowship: the closest thing to an honors award you apply for after arriving. Details below.

Research funding pays for project costs like travel, equipment, and lab or archive access. It does not lower your tuition bill.

Timing Note: The University Undergraduate Research Fellowship is only open to first-year Krieger students, so the clock starts the moment your student arrives. Last cycle the pre-application was due December 21 and the final application January 25. Students who want it should start talking to professors in the fall of freshman year.
Research Is the Real “Honors” Experience Here
  • 80% of undergraduates do at least one research experience, according to Hopkins.
  • Krieger research awards: the same office that runs the University Fellowship offers one-year research grants to sophomores and juniors.
  • First-gen students: the FLI Network connects students to summer experience funding.

Honors at Johns Hopkins: FAQs

Does Johns Hopkins have an honors college?
No. There is no separate honors college or honors application. Selective programs like the Hodson Scholars, Clark Scholars, and Cummings Scholars are chosen from the admission file instead.

What is the University Undergraduate Research Fellowship?
It funds an independent research project across three years with up to $12,000. About 10 first-year Krieger students are chosen each year, and they commit to at least two full summers of research. It used to be called the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship.

Can engineering students apply for it?
No. Fellows must be majors in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. Engineering students have the Clark Scholars program and the Westgate Scholarship instead.

Does a research fellowship reduce our financial aid?
Research fellowships pay project costs rather than your bill, so they are a different pot from tuition aid. If your student receives other outside money, check with Student Financial Support on how it is counted.

⭐ College Specialty

Johns Hopkins calls itself America’s first research university, and that is not a slogan. It leads the country in research spending, and Hopkins says 80% of undergraduates do at least one research project. Families tend to think “pre-med,” and the medical pipeline is real, but the strengths run much wider: engineering, public health, international studies, neuroscience, and writing all draw students from across the country.

Nationally Known Program:
Biomedical Engineering: Hopkins’ undergraduate BME program has been ranked No. 1 by U.S. News for years, run jointly by the engineering school and the School of Medicine. One catch: BME admits separately inside the Hopkins application. List it as your first-choice major, and know that a student can be admitted to Hopkins without a spot in BME.
  • Public Health Studies: undergraduates study next door to the Bloomberg School of Public Health, ranked No. 1 among graduate public health schools.
  • Neuroscience and Molecular Biology: some of the most popular majors on campus, with constant access to Hopkins medical research labs.
  • International Studies: a large, well-known major with a direct-admit path to a master’s in international relations.
  • Writing Seminars: one of the country’s oldest undergraduate creative writing programs.
  • Computer Science, Applied Math, and Economics: strong quantitative majors that feed tech, finance, and data science careers.
  • Peabody Institute: Hopkins’ music conservatory, with its own admission and aid rules separate from the Tuition Promise.

✅ Wrapping It Up

Johns Hopkins flips the usual scholarship game on its head. Most colleges on our site make you chase merit money with scores and deadlines. Hopkins barely bothers with merit: fewer than 20 Hodson awards, two Westgates, and a handful of cohort programs. Instead it puts nearly everything into need-based aid, and as of 2026-27 that aid is remarkably generous. Families earning up to $200,000 pay no tuition, families under $100,000 pay nothing, and nobody is expected to borrow.

That means the winning move here isn’t a higher test score. It’s paperwork. File the CSS Profile and FAFSA with the application, keep an eye on the asset rule if you have big savings outside retirement accounts, and don’t count on outside scholarships or a merit award to lower your bill once your need is met. If your student is a Baltimore City or DC public school grad, look hard at the Cummings Scholars Program, which is one of the best deals in American higher education.

The academic side lives up to the name, from the No. 1 biomedical engineering program to research opportunities that start freshman year. For a middle-income family that assumed a $95,000 sticker price was out of reach, Hopkins may end up cheaper than your state flagship. The only way to find out is to run the numbers.

I started CollegeReadyParent while working through college costs for my own kid, and quickly figured out that the number a school advertises and the number a family actually pays are two very different things. Since then I’ve gone school by school pulling apart award letters, scholarship pages, and cost sheets to find what families are supposed to just know. This site is the version of that research I wish someone had handed me. More about Leo →
