It’s an openly Christian college, and the application shows it. Every applicant needs a Christian faith reference from a pastor, youth leader or mentor outside the family. If your student isn’t comfortable with that, this isn’t the right fit.
The acceptance rate is high, but the class is strong. Wheaton admits close to 9 out of 10 applicants, yet the average enrolled student had a 3.79 GPA. The people who apply mostly already belong there.
Test-optional, with two exceptions. Homeschooled and international applicants still have to send an SAT, ACT or CLT score. Everyone else can choose, and Wheaton superscores all three tests.
There are four admission rounds: Oct 15, Nov 15, Jan 15 and Feb 15. The scholarship dates that matter (Aequitas and SMLS) fall early, so applying in the fall gives your student the most shots at money.
🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Wheaton (Read This First)
The first-year offer is basically the four-year offer. Wheaton keeps your total grant and scholarship money level through graduation, adjusting only for part-time enrollment or a housing change. If tuition goes up, the family covers the increase. That makes the first award letter the one to question before you put down a deposit.
Wheaton money stops at tuition. All Wheaton scholarships and grants added together can’t go past the tuition bill ($49,000 for 2026-27). Housing and food (about $14,270) is always the family’s piece unless outside money or Pell covers it.
The best extra award is invite-only, and Round 1 closes Nov 3, 2026. Aequitas Fellows get $4,000 a year on top of everything else. Students don’t apply cold; they get invited after they apply to Wheaton. Check the applicant portal. Round 2 closes Feb 2, 2027.
The full-tuition scholarship has a Nov 20 deadline and a separate application. Summit Multicultural Leadership Scholars (SMLS) takes up to 15 students a year and requires financial need.
Wheaton doesn’t meet full need. On average it covered about 76% of need for first-years in 2024-25. Run the net price calculator early so the gap doesn’t surprise you in April.
FAQ
Is this college test-optional? Yes, for admission. Wheaton College (Illinois) is test-optional for admission, but scholarships can work differently (see the next question).
Do you need test scores for scholarships at Wheaton College (Illinois)? Test-optional for most, but homeschool and international applicants must submit SAT, ACT or CLT. Wheaton superscores, and scores can lift academic scholarship placement.
What is the middle 50% ACT/SAT? ACT: 28-32; SAT: 1260-1470.
Average net price? About $26,059/year after aid.
Does this school use waivers/reciprocity?
No. It is a private school, so everyone pays the same rate.

📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest Wheaton College (Illinois) has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.
Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly $1,300 to $3,200 more than the total below.
✔ Same price for every student, no matter which state you live in.
All students: billed cost per year
$63,804
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees
$49,534
Housing & meals (typical)
$14,270
Total billed cost
$63,804
Average federal net price: $26,059 per year.
This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.
One Price for Every State
Wheaton is private, so there’s no in-state discount and no out-of-state penalty. A family in Wheaton, Illinois and a family in Texas see the same bill.
What changes the price is aid: academic scholarships, the need-based Wheaton Grant, and for Illinois families, the state MAP Grant and Wheaton’s own
Illinois Promise.
What’s Actually on the 2026-27 Bill
Tuition: $49,000
Average course fees: $184 (Conservatory students pay more)
Health and wellness fee: $350
Double room in a residence hall: $8,380
18-meal plan: $5,890 (residence hall students must pick the 18 or 14 meal plan)
That adds up to Wheaton’s own number of $63,804. New first-years also pay a one-time $995 fee for Passage, the orientation program. Books, travel home and spending money come on top of that.
FAQ: Cost of Attendance at Wheaton College (Illinois)
Do out-of-state students pay more at Wheaton?
No. Wheaton is a private college, so tuition is the same no matter where you live. There’s no reciprocity program to worry about either, because there’s no out-of-state premium to waive.
What do families actually pay after aid?
The federal College Scorecard puts the average at about $26,000 a year after grants and scholarships. It moves a lot with income: families under $110,000 paid roughly $18,000 to $21,000 on average, while families over $110,000 paid about $35,000. The only way to know your number is the Wheaton net price calculator.
Will my aid go up if tuition goes up?
Usually not. Wheaton holds your total grant and scholarship aid level from year to year, adjusting only for part-time enrollment or housing changes. So any tuition increase lands on the family. Budget for it from day one.
Does Wheaton meet 100% of financial need?
No. In 2024-25, Wheaton met about 76% of need on average for first-years who got need-based aid, and only 62 of 317 had their full need met. Expect a gap and plan how you’ll cover it with savings, work-study or loans.
Can Illinois families use the MAP Grant at Wheaton?
Yes. MAP works at private Illinois colleges, Wheaton included, and it’s the key that unlocks the Wheaton Illinois Promise. MAP is paid out until the state money runs dry, so file the FAFSA as soon as it opens in the fall.
Is there a CSS Profile?
No. Wheaton uses the FAFSA only (school code 001781). That makes the paperwork simpler than at a lot of private colleges.
Can my student live at home to save money?
Wheaton is a residential college and builds aid assuming students live on campus. Aid gets adjusted for students who live off campus or at home, and the Illinois Promise requires on-campus housing, so living at home can cost you aid. Ask Student Financial Services before you decide.
As soon as the FAFSA opens in the fall: File it. Wheaton Grant is first-come, first-served, and Illinois MAP runs out.
Nov 3, 2026: Aequitas Round 1 closes (invite only).
Nov 20: Summit Multicultural Leadership Scholars application due.
Feb 2, 2027: Aequitas Round 2 closes.
Parent rule of thumb: the academic scholarship arrives with the acceptance letter, so the earlier your student applies, the earlier you see the real price.
Automatic Merit Scholarships: Wheaton College (Illinois)
Every applicant is considered for a Wheaton Academic Scholarship. There’s no extra form. The award shows up with the acceptance letter.
Here’s the catch: Wheaton doesn’t publish GPA or test cutoffs for any tier, so you can’t look up your number in a chart.
The one guarantee: National Merit Semifinalists get the top $25,000 Trustee Scholarship.

Automatic Merit: FAQs (Wheaton College, Illinois)
How much are Wheaton’s academic scholarships?
For 2026-27 there are five levels: Trustee $25,000, President $23,000, Provost $20,000, Dean $15,000 and the Wheaton Scholarship $8,000, all per year for up to eight semesters.
What GPA or test score do I need for each level?
Wheaton doesn’t say. It’s a holistic review of grades, course rigor and the rest of the application. For a reality check, first-years without financial need who got merit in 2024-25 averaged about $22,000, which sits between Provost and President.
Should my student send test scores?
If the score helps, yes. Wheaton is test-optional and superscores the SAT, ACT and CLT, and scores can lift scholarship placement. The middle 50% of enrolled students who sent an ACT scored 28 to 32. Homeschooled and international applicants must send a score.
What’s the Wheaton Illinois Promise?
For Illinois residents who qualify for both a Federal Pell Grant and an Illinois MAP Grant, Wheaton covers whatever tuition is left after those grants and Wheaton’s own aid. The student has to live on campus and take at least 12 credit hours. It covers tuition, not housing or food.
Who doesn’t qualify for the Illinois Promise?
Students outside Illinois, students who qualify for only one of the two grants, and students who got Pell or MAP only through a one-time special-circumstance appeal. Missing the MAP FAFSA deadline in a later year also ends it.
Do academic scholarships renew automatically?
They’re good for eight semesters as long as your student stays at least half-time and makes Satisfactory Academic Progress. They’re prorated for part-time semesters and not paid for summer.
Is there a National Merit bonus beyond Trustee?
Yes. Finalists who name Wheaton first with National Merit can add a $1,000 renewable award or a one-time $2,500 award. That’s covered in the next section.
Wheaton doesn’t run a big full-ride competition. The one full-tuition award is Summit Multicultural Leadership Scholars (SMLS):
up to 15 students a year, a separate essay application, and a Nov 20 deadline. It’s open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents
with financial need who’ve done real bridge-building work across different communities.

❓ Flagship / Competitive Scholarship FAQs
When is the SMLS deadline?
November 20. Your student applies to Wheaton and then sends the separate SMLS application with essays. Transfer and Conservatory applicants can sometimes be considered after the deadline.
Who can apply for SMLS?
U.S. citizens and permanent residents with demonstrated financial need, strong grades in challenging classes, evidence of Christian faith, and leadership in diverse communities. Scholars meet quarterly and hold campus leadership roles for at least two years.
How many SMLS scholarships are there?
Up to 15 a year. That’s a small number, so treat it as a reach and keep the academic scholarship and Wheaton Grant in your budget plan.
Does Wheaton give money to National Merit Finalists?
Yes. Wheaton is a National Merit sponsor. Finalists who name Wheaton first get either $1,000 a year for up to four years or a one-time $2,500 award, and National Merit decides which. That’s on top of the $25,000 Trustee Scholarship Semifinalists already get.
Are there athletic scholarships?
No. Wheaton plays NCAA Division III, which doesn’t allow athletic scholarships. Athletes are considered for the same academic and need-based aid as everyone else.
How does Army ROTC work with Wheaton aid?
Wheaton hosts the Rolling Thunder Battalion. First-years who win a full-tuition Army ROTC scholarship for years 2 through 4 get a Brigade Gap Scholarship that tops year one up to 75% of tuition, plus housing and food. After that ROTC pays tuition and Wheaton keeps paying housing and food.
🧠 Parent Strategy: Pick the Right Door Into Wheaton
At Wheaton, some money depends on which application your student files and which extra steps they take. Before you hit submit, check:
Music majors: apply to the Conservatory of Music, not Arts and Sciences. The admission audition is also the scholarship audition, and only Conservatory students get music awards.
Engineering students: write the short engineering scholarship essay in the winter of senior year.
Homeschool graduates: keep a letter from a non-family member about your community service handy.
Everyone: file the FAFSA early. Wheaton Grant goes out first-come, first-served.
Parent translation: none of these are huge on their own, but they’re the pieces that turn a “close” offer into one that works.
💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships
These awards aren’t automatic, but most of them add on top of the academic scholarship. Some depend on your student’s major, some on need, and one on homeschooling.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ
What is the Wheaton Grant?
It’s Wheaton’s own need-based grant, figured from the FAFSA. It’s usually the last piece of the package after federal and state grants, and it’s handed out first-come, first-served, so filing early matters.
How much are Conservatory music scholarships?
Wheaton says only that they vary. Every Conservatory applicant who auditions is considered. Audition deadlines are Nov 13, Dec 5, Feb 6 and Mar 1, depending on the admission round.
Can a Bachelor of Arts music major get a music scholarship?
Music awards are for Conservatory students, meaning the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Music Education degrees. A student who wants the money needs to apply to the Conservatory.
What engineering scholarships are there for first-years?
Three for incoming students: the Milbourne, the Wheaton Engineering Scholars Award and the Shuster. Students apply with a one to two page essay. The 2026 deadline was January 22, and Wheaton hadn’t posted the 2027 date yet. Amounts aren’t published.
Is there anything for homeschooled students?
The Acker Academy Excellence in Home Education Scholarship gives $1,500 to one first-year a year. The student has to qualify for an academic scholarship and show community service through a letter from someone outside the family. Wheaton contacts eligible students.
Will outside scholarships cut my Wheaton aid?
Only if they push you past your financial need. Then Wheaton trims work-study first, then loans, and grants last. So outside money usually replaces the parts you’d rather not have anyway.
No Honors College at Wheaton. Here’s Aequitas Instead.
Wheaton doesn’t have an honors college. Its argument is that the average Wheaton student already works at an honors level. What it has instead is the
Aequitas Fellows Program: small groups of students who
take classes together around one big theme for all four years, with money attached.
The money: $4,000 a year on top of the academic scholarship and need-based aid, plus funding for a summer experience like study abroad, an internship or research.
The themes: Global Public Health; Politics, Philosophy and Economics; Public Humanities and the Arts; Sustainability; and Urban Leadership. Each one works with almost any major.
How you get in: by invitation. Wheaton looks at your student’s application and invites a select group to apply with an essay. Finalists interview.

Round 2 is due February 2, 2027, with Fellows chosen in mid-March. If your student applied to Wheaton, check the applicant portal for an invitation.
The 3.0 Rule (Read This Twice)
Wheaton checks grades after each spring. If your student’s cumulative GPA is under 3.0, the Aequitas award is gone for good. It doesn’t come back even if the GPA recovers later. That’s stricter than the academic scholarship, which only requires normal academic progress.
Does Wheaton have an honors college?
No. Aequitas is Wheaton’s version of an honors track. It’s a four-year cohort with shared classes, reading groups, events and a certificate at the end.
Can my student apply to Aequitas without an invitation?
No. Wheaton invites students based on their admission application, looking for strong academics, leadership and serious Christian commitment.
How much is the Aequitas scholarship?
An extra $4,000 a year for up to eight semesters, plus money toward a summer learning experience. It’s added on top of other aid, but all Wheaton aid together still stops at tuition.
How big is the program?
Wheaton reported 64 first-years picked for one recent class across all the themes, so it’s selective but not tiny.
Can an Aequitas Fellow still major in anything?
Yes. Each theme is built to pair with almost any major. A biology student could join Global Public Health, and an economics student could join Politics, Philosophy and Economics.
Wheaton is a small Christian liberal arts college about 25 miles west of Chicago, with roughly 2,150 undergraduates and a 10 to 1 student-to-faculty ratio.
Faith isn’t a side program here. It’s built into the general education requirements, which Wheaton calls Christ at the Core.
Families usually come for that mix: serious academics taught by professors who share the faith.
Nationally Known Program: Conservatory of Music: a full music school inside a liberal arts college, offering the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Music Education.
Admission is by audition, and the same audition decides music scholarships. Music education graduates are prepared to teach K-12 in Illinois.
Biology and pre-health: one of Wheaton’s most popular majors, with neuroscience, biochemistry, health science and a liberal arts nursing track nearby.
Business and economics: business is among the most-enrolled majors, alongside economics and a newer business analytics degree.
Psychology, communication and English: all three are listed by Wheaton among its biggest majors.
Biblical and theological studies: what Wheaton is best known for in the Christian world, with a graduate school and the Billy Graham Center on campus.
Engineering: a 4-year program or a 3-2 dual degree, where students finish with a second engineering degree from a partner university.
Teacher education: elementary and secondary programs lead to an Illinois teaching license, and Wheaton is a Golden Apple Scholars partner.
Learning outside the classroom: HoneyRock, Wheaton’s leadership center in northern Wisconsin; a field station in the Black Hills of South Dakota; and a semester in Chicago.
The outcomes are solid for a small school: 96.5% of the Class of 2025 had a job, grad school or service placement within six months,
and 69% did at least one internship along the way.

Wheaton is for a specific kind of student: one who wants a hard academic program and a Christian community at the same time, and doesn’t want to choose between them. If that’s your kid, the money side is fairly predictable. Almost everyone gets an academic scholarship between $8,000 and $25,000, the Wheaton Grant fills in some of the need, and Illinois families with Pell and MAP can get tuition covered through the Illinois Promise.
Two things to keep in front of you. First, whatever Wheaton offers freshman year is roughly what you’ll get every year, while tuition keeps climbing, so judge the offer on four years, not one. Second, the extra money comes early: Aequitas by invitation in November and February, and the full-tuition SMLS scholarship by November 20. File the FAFSA the day it opens, apply in the fall, and watch the applicant portal.

Your kid did everything right. That does not mean the money follows.
Most families build a college list first and think about scholarships second, which is backwards. This free four-part series shows you where the money actually comes from, and how to build a list around it.
After the series, about once a month, sometimes twice during application season. No drip funnels, no affiliate pitches, and we never sell your information. Unsubscribe anytime.

I started CollegeReadyParent while working through college costs for my own kid, and quickly figured out that the number a school advertises and the number a family actually pays are two very different things. Since then I’ve gone school by school pulling apart award letters, scholarship pages, and cost sheets to find what families are supposed to just know. This site is the version of that research I wish someone had handed me. More about Leo →
