💡 The Big Picture at Cal State LA

Cal State LA plays a different game than most schools on this site. There is no merit grid, no test-score ladder, and right now no honors scholarship for incoming freshmen. What it has instead is a very low sticker price and a state aid system that does the heavy lifting. Tuition and fees run $7,938 for California residents, and the average family receiving aid paid about $4,460 a year after grants. That is why Cal State LA ranks No. 1 in the country for moving students up the income ladder. For this school, the FAFSA or CADAA is your scholarship application.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Cal State LA (Read This First)

  • The Honors College is closed to new students. It admitted nobody for 2025-26 or 2026-27, and that froze the President’s Scholars award ($2,500 to $6,800 a year), the only merit money freshmen used to get. Some outside websites still list it as available. It is not, until Cal State LA says otherwise.
  • March 2 is the real money deadline. Cal Grant, the State University Grant, and the Middle Class Scholarship all key off the FAFSA or CADAA. For Cal Grant A, your high school must also send a verified GPA to the state by March 2, and that step gets missed all the time.
  • Test scores do nothing here. Cal State LA is test-blind for admission and for every scholarship. Skip the retake fees.
  • WUE skips some of the most popular majors. Western students can pay 150% of in-state tuition, but not in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Nursing, Social Work, Music BM, Fire Protection, or Urban Learning. And you can only opt out of WUE during your first term.
  • Pre-Nursing is a one-shot door. It takes a 3.5 GPA plus a B- or better on your first try in Algebra II, Biology, and Chemistry. Students admitted to another major cannot switch into Nursing later.
  • EOP has its own January deadline. First-generation and lower-income students should check the EOP box in Cal State Apply and finish the separate EOP questions by mid-January. Miss it and the program, plus its grant, is gone for good.

💰 Cost of Attendance at California State University, Los Angeles: 2026–2027 Rates

Figures verified against official sources in October 2026.

📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest California State University, Los Angeles has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.

Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly $600 to $1,500 more than the in-state total below. $800 to $2,100 more than the out-of-state total below.

In-State: billed cost per year
$29,592
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $7,938
Housing & meals (typical) $21,654
Total billed cost $29,592
Out-of-State: billed cost per year
$41,838
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $20,184
Housing & meals (typical) $21,654
Total billed cost $41,838

That is $12,246 more per year than California residents pay, before any waivers or scholarships.

Average federal net price: $4,460 per year. This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, for in-state students only, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.

Out-of-state families: this average does not include you. Run the college's own net price calculator for a number based on your situation.

📌 Regional Tuition & Waiver Options

Out-of-state students pay a nonresident charge of $471 per unit on top of regular tuition (about $12,246 a year at 13 units per semester). Since Fall 2025, Cal State LA participates in the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE): students from WICHE states admitted to an eligible major pay 150% of resident tuition instead, about $5,676 per semester in tuition and campus fees for Fall 2026 compared with about $9,618 at the standard nonresident rate for 12 units. WUE is not available in Criminal Justice, Fire Protection Administration and Technology, Music BM, Nursing (including Pre-Nursing), Psychology, Social Work, or Urban Learning, and WUE awards also consider the applicant's academic profile. California's nonresident tuition exemption (AB 540) can waive the nonresident charge for eligible students who attended California high schools.
Living at Home Changes Everything

At Cal State LA, housing costs more than tuition. On-campus housing alone is budgeted at $13,682 for 2026-27, compared with $7,938 in tuition and fees. Cal State LA’s own estimate puts a student living at home at about $29,696 for the year, versus about $38,500 on campus. Most students here commute, and for a lot of LA-area families that one decision saves more than any scholarship could.

FAQ: Cost of Attendance at Cal State LA

How much is tuition at Cal State LA for California residents?
For 2026-27, tuition and mandatory fees are $7,938 for a full-time undergraduate (two semesters). That is $3,419 in CSU tuition plus about $547 in campus fees each semester. You may see $7,160 on older Cal State LA pages; that was the 2024-25 figure.

Can Cal Grant or the State University Grant cover all of tuition?
Yes, if you qualify. Cal Grant A and the State University Grant each pay the full CSU tuition charge ($6,838 in 2026-27), though never both for the same term. Campus fees, housing, and food are not covered, so plan for those separately. Both depend on filing the FAFSA or CADAA by March 2.

What do out-of-state students pay?
Nonresidents pay an extra $471 per unit on top of regular tuition, which adds roughly $11,000 to $12,000 a year for a full-time load. Students from Western states may qualify for WUE instead (see below).

How does the WUE discount work at Cal State LA?
Since Fall 2025, Cal State LA takes part in the Western Undergraduate Exchange. Eligible students from WICHE states pay 150% of in-state tuition, about $5,676 a semester in Fall 2026 versus about $9,618 at the standard nonresident rate for 12 units. There is no separate application, and notices go out by mid-April. Freshmen keep it for up to 4 years with good standing and continuous enrollment. Criminal Justice, Psychology, Nursing, Social Work, Music BM, Fire Protection, and Urban Learning are excluded.

Can a WUE student switch to California residency later?
Only with planning. You can opt out of WUE during your first term only, and time spent under WUE does not count toward the physical presence needed for California residency. If residency is the long-term goal, talk to admissions before the first term ends.

Is the $4,460 average net price real?
That is the federal figure for full-time freshmen who received grant aid in 2023-24. It varies a lot by income: about $2,877 for families under $30,000, about $7,355 for $75,000 to $110,000, and about $13,578 above $110,000. Cal State LA’s net price calculator will give you a number for your own family.

Do undocumented or AB 540 students get aid?
Yes. Students who qualify for the nonresident tuition exemption (AB 540) pay resident tuition, and by filing the California Dream Act Application (CADAA) instead of the FAFSA they can receive Cal Grant, the State University Grant, and the Middle Class Scholarship.

📅 Cal State LA Money Timeline (Simple Version)

  • October 1: FAFSA and CADAA open. File early so nothing is waiting on you in March.
  • Mid-January: EOP application deadline inside Cal State Apply (January 15 last cycle).
  • March 2: FAFSA or CADAA plus verified GPA due for Cal Grant, SUG, and the Middle Class Scholarship.
  • Spring of freshman year: the General Scholarship Application opens for next year’s money.

Parent rule of thumb: at Cal State LA, March 2 matters more than any scholarship essay.

Automatic Scholarships at Cal State LA

Cal State LA does not offer automatic merit scholarships based on GPA or test scores. The “automatic” money here is California state aid: file the FAFSA or CADAA by March 2, and if you qualify, it shows up without a separate application. Out-of-state students should use the residency filter and look at WUE in the cost section instead.

🕵

No fixed amount: the state computes cost of attendance minus other gift aid, minus an $8,616 student contribution, minus a parent contribution for incomes over $100,000, and pays a share of what is left based on the year's budget. 🕵
Who Actually Wins
Most winners: Families between roughly $100,000 and $262,000 at a UC or CSU, the group that gets nothing from Cal Grant. The award changes every year with the state budget, so a sophomore's letter can be smaller than freshman year's for reasons that have nothing to do with the student.

This institution does not offer designated Automatic Merit scholarships at this time.

Note: Cal Grant A and the State University Grant both pay tuition, but never both for the same term. If your family’s income is too high for Cal Grant, the Middle Class Scholarship is the one to watch.

Automatic Aid FAQs (Cal State LA)

Does Cal State LA have automatic merit scholarships?
No. There is no GPA or test-score scholarship grid for freshmen. The one merit award incoming freshmen used to get, President’s Scholars, ran through the Honors College, which is not admitting new students right now.

What GPA do I need for Cal Grant A?
A 3.0 high school GPA, plus family income and assets under the state ceiling ($144,700 for a family of four in 2026-27). Your high school sends the GPA to the state; check with the counselor that it went in by March 2.

What if I miss Cal Grant?
The State University Grant is the backup. It covers CSU tuition for California students with need who did not get Cal Grant, and it is awarded from the same FAFSA or CADAA. Funds are limited, so filing by March 2 still matters.

Why is my Cal Grant B so small freshman year?
Year one of Cal Grant B is a $1,648 access award for books and living costs. Starting sophomore year it adds full tuition on top, so the second-year award is far larger.

We make over $100,000. Is there anything for us?
Yes. The Middle Class Scholarship reaches families with income and assets up to about $262,000 at UC and CSU campuses. There is no GPA requirement and no separate application, but the amount changes each year with the state budget.

Do test scores help with any of this?
No. Cal State LA is test-blind, and the state programs are based on GPA and financial need.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)

Cal State LA does not run a big flagship scholarship competition for incoming freshmen. Its top merit awards lived inside the Honors College, which is paused. The competitive money that exists today is mostly for current students, starting the spring of freshman year.

✅ How Aid Stacks at Cal State LA

Aid Type Stacks? Parent Translation
Cal Grant A + SUG No (one or the other) Both pay tuition, so you get one, never both for the same term.
Pell Grant Yes Federal money on top of state tuition aid. Often the piece that helps with living costs.
Middle Class Scholarship Yes Calculated after other gift aid, so it fills whatever gap is left.
Donor and outside scholarships Usually You must report every one, even checks mailed to you. Once need is fully met, Cal State LA may trim other aid.
WUE (out-of-state) Yes A tuition rate, not a scholarship, so it never shows up in the aid package.

If your student is chasing a big essay-and-interview scholarship as a freshman, Cal State LA is not where that happens right now. The better play is outside scholarships during senior year of high school, plus the CSU Trustees’ Award once they are enrolled with a 3.0 and a story to tell.

CSU system award funded by the Hearst Foundations, the CSU Trustees, and private donors. Each campus forwards nominees to the CSU Foundation. Cal State LA lists the range as $7,000 to $20,000; other CSU campuses describe most awards as $7,000, with specially named awards (STEM, education, veterans, community service) at the higher end. Open to current students, so it is a year-two option, not freshman money.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
Most winners: A current Cal State LA student with a 3.0 or better, real financial need, and a story of pushing through something hard while still showing up for school and community. The personal statement carries the application. Expect roughly one winner per campus, so treat it as a long shot worth an evening, not a plan.

❓ Competitive Scholarship FAQs

Who can apply for the CSU Trustees’ Award?
Current full-time Cal State LA students with at least a 3.0 GPA and financial need on the FAFSA or CADAA. It rewards students who have overcome real adversity and still performed in class and in their community. Incoming high school seniors are not eligible.

How much is the Trustees’ Award?
Cal State LA lists $7,000 to $20,000. Most campus winners receive $7,000, with specially named awards in STEM, education, veterans service, and community service paying more.

When is the deadline?
The campus deadline was April 10 in 2026. Watch Cal State LA’s scholarships page in early spring for the 2027 date.

Did Cal State LA ever have a freshman merit scholarship?
Yes. President’s Scholars paid $2,500 to $6,800 a year to California residents with a 3.75 GPA who entered the Honors College. With Honors admissions paused for 2025-26 and 2026-27, that award is not open to new freshmen.

What should students prepare for competitive applications?
A strong personal statement is the whole game. Families can use our Essay Toolkit and Brag Sheet Builder to get the story and accomplishments organized ahead of time.

🧠 Parent Strategy: Line Up the Letter in February

Cal State LA’s 400+ donor scholarships all run through one General Scholarship Application, and freshmen can apply in the spring of year one for sophomore-year money. Most of those awards require a letter of recommendation, and that is where students lose.

  1. During fall semester, have your student get to know at least one professor or advisor.
  2. In February, ask that person to write a letter before the window opens.
  3. When the application opens in March, finish the questions and a personal statement of two pages or less.
  4. Check before the April deadline that the letter actually arrived.

Parent translation: one application covers hundreds of awards, but a missing letter quietly knocks a student out of most of them.

💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships

These are the awards most families never hear about. A few are for students the moment they apply, and the rest open up once your student is on campus. None require test scores.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

Can incoming freshmen apply for the General Scholarship Application?
Not as high school seniors. It is open to current Cal State LA students who will be enrolled the following year. Freshmen apply in the spring of their first year for money the next fall.

What is EOP, and is it worth the extra application?
The Educational Opportunity Program supports first-generation, low-income, and educationally disadvantaged students with counseling, a summer bridge, peer mentors, and priority registration. EOP students who qualify for aid can also get an EOP grant of up to $1,100 a year. Students can only join at the application stage, so check the box in Cal State Apply.

What is the CSU Future Scholars Scholarship?
A short spring form for California-resident freshmen already enrolled full-time at Cal State LA. It asks how the money would help and what financial pressures the family faces. The deadline was May 8 in 2026, and Cal State LA does not publish the award amount.

Do I have to report outside scholarships?
Yes, every one, including checks mailed straight to your student. Cal State LA folds them into the aid package and may adjust other aid once need is fully met.

Are there scholarships for specific majors?
Yes. Many of the 400+ donor funds target majors such as nursing, engineering, chemistry, criminalistics, music, journalism, and education. The General Scholarship Application matches students to them automatically based on their record.

The Honors College at Cal State LA (Currently Paused)

Status as of October 2026: Cal State LA’s Honors College is not admitting new students. It took no new freshmen, transfers, or Early Entrance students for 2025-26, and on May 19, 2026, Cal State LA announced none would be admitted for 2026-27 while the college is reimagined. Nothing has been announced for Fall 2027. Current Honors students keep their courses, services, and scholarships through graduation.

This matters for money because the Honors College was the only place Cal State LA offered merit scholarships to incoming freshmen. If Honors admissions reopen, these are the awards to watch for:

  • President’s Scholars: $2,500 to $6,800 a year, potentially renewable for up to three more years. Required California residency, a 3.75 high school GPA, and enrollment in the Honors College.
  • Honors College Scholars: multi-year awards for incoming Honors freshmen. Amounts varied.
  • Named Honors awards: including Edison Scholars, Joseph Drown Scholars, and the Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarship.

Honors College Scholarships

This institution does not offer designated Honors College scholarships at this time.

We are not listing Honors awards as available while admissions are paused. We will update this section as soon as Cal State LA posts a new admission cycle.

Watch Out for Old Pages: Cal State LA’s Honors requirements page still shows deadlines from the 2024-25 cycle, and several outside scholarship sites list President’s Scholars as active. Go by the Honors College admission update page, which is the one Cal State LA keeps current.
The Early Entrance Program (Also Paused)

Since 1982, Cal State LA has run one of the few programs in the country that lets highly gifted kids start college full-time as young as 11, with an average entering age of about 13 and a half. It lives inside the Honors College, so it is paused too. If you have a young student who might fit, keep an eye on the EEP page for news.

Honors College FAQs (Cal State LA)

Can my student apply to the Honors College for Fall 2027?
Not as of October 2026. Cal State LA has not announced a Fall 2027 admission cycle. Check the Honors College admission update page before you apply.

Are there any merit scholarships for freshmen right now?
Not from Cal State LA. Freshman aid here is need-based: Cal Grant, the State University Grant, the Middle Class Scholarship, Pell, and EOP. Outside scholarships won in high school still count and are worth chasing.

Will current Honors students lose their scholarships?
No. Cal State LA has said continuing Honors students keep their courses, opportunities, and scholarships through graduation without disruption.

Can a student join Honors later as a sophomore or transfer?
Normally yes, with a 3.5 college GPA, but that pathway is paused too. If the college reopens, sophomore and transfer entry is the most likely second chance.

⭐ College Specialty

Cal State LA sits on a hilltop about five miles from downtown Los Angeles, and its whole identity is built around one idea: take students from working families and launch them into good careers. It does that better than almost anyone. Harvard’s Opportunity Insights research ranks Cal State LA No. 1 in the nation for upward mobility, and most of its students are the first in their families to go to college.

Nationally Known Program:
Criminal Justice and Criminalistics: Cal State LA’s Hertzberg-Davis Forensic Science Center puts the crime labs of the Los Angeles Police Department and the LA County Sheriff’s Department in the same building as the School of Criminal Justice and Criminalistics. It is the largest municipal and regional crime lab collaboration in the country, and students study next door to working forensic scientists. Note that Criminal Justice is not eligible for the WUE tuition discount.
  • Business: The College of Business and Economics has held AACSB accreditation for more than 60 years and produces more graduates than any other area on campus, with strong pipelines in accounting, finance, and management.
  • Nursing: The Patricia A. Chin School of Nursing is one of the most competitive programs at Cal State LA. Admission is decided at the freshman application, so the high school science and math grades matter.
  • Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology: Hands-on and industry-connected. The campus Hydrogen Research and Fueling Facility was the first station anywhere to sell hydrogen fuel to the public by the kilogram, and students help run it.
  • Education: Home to the nation’s first Charter College of Education, created in 1993, and a major pipeline for California teachers.
  • Psychology and Social Work: Two of the largest majors on campus, feeding counseling, social services, and graduate programs. Neither is eligible for WUE.
  • Television, Film, and Media: Hollywood is down the freeway, and the program uses the city as its classroom.

One more point of pride: the National Science Foundation lists Cal State LA as the top undergraduate starting point for Latino science and engineering Ph.D. recipients among undergraduate and master’s universities in the continental United States.

✅ Wrapping It Up

Cal State LA is a school where the price tag does most of the work. There is no merit ladder to climb, no test score to chase, and for now no honors scholarship waiting at the top. What there is: tuition under $8,000, a state aid system that can cover all of it for families who qualify, and the best track record in the country for turning first-generation students into middle-class earners.

For most families, winning here comes down to three habits. File the FAFSA or CADAA early and make sure the GPA reaches the state by March 2. Check the EOP box if your student is the first in the family to go to college. And once your student is on campus, line up a professor’s letter every spring so the 400+ donor scholarships stay within reach. Do those, and live at home if you can, and a Cal State LA degree can cost less than a used car.
