🏛️ What Makes Oakwood Different

Oakwood is a Seventh-day Adventist HBCU in Huntsville, founded in 1896 on what is now a 1,186-acre campus, with roughly 1,200 undergraduates. Faith shapes the calendar here: the Sabbath runs from Friday sunset to Saturday sunset, and Oakwood even offers an on-campus “Residual ACT” the day before fall orientation for accepted students who couldn’t test anywhere else, including students who won’t sit for a Saturday exam.

Admission is rolling and Oakwood admitted about 46% of applicants in the most recent reported year. Oakwood doesn’t publish middle-50% test ranges, which is why the snapshot above shows N/A. The average enrolled freshman ACT was about 20.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Oakwood (Read This First)

  • A test score is worth less than you’d think, until the top. Oakwood’s BLUE awards use GPA alone. A qualifying ACT or SAT adds $1,000 to $2,000 a year at most GPA levels and $6,250 only at the 3.9+/26+ Platinum tier. The SAT is read as a composite, not superscored.
  • May 1 is a money date. Pay the $200 intent-to-enroll fee by May 1 and Oakwood adds a $1,000 Early Bird scholarship.
  • “Automatic” still has a ceiling. Oakwood says every internal scholarship is limited in funding and in slots, and once a scholarship fills, nobody else is considered. Earlier is safer.
  • Outside money can shrink Oakwood’s money. Oakwood applies state, federal and outside scholarships first and won’t let total aid pass tuition, room and board.
  • The award can move after graduation. Offers are built on the 9th to 11th grade transcript and can change once the final transcript arrives.

FAQ

Is this college test-optional? No. Oakwood University is test-required for admission.

Do you need test scores for scholarships at Oakwood University? Oakwood's BLUE awards use GPA only. The GOLD awards need an official ACT or SAT (SAT read as a single composite) and pay $1,000 to $6,250 a year more than the BLUE award at the same GPA.

What is the middle 50% ACT/SAT? ACT: N/A; SAT: N/A.

Average net price? About $22,833/year after aid.

Does this school use waivers/reciprocity? No. It is a private school, so everyone pays the same rate.

💰 Cost of Attendance at Oakwood University: 2026–2027 Rates

Figures verified against official sources in October 2026.

📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest Oakwood University has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.

Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly $700 to $1,700 more than the total below.

✔ Same price for every student, no matter which state you live in.

All students: billed cost per year
$34,768
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $24,112
Housing & meals (typical) $10,656
Total billed cost $34,768

Average federal net price: $22,833 per year. This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.

One Price From Every State (and a Heads-Up on Timing)

Oakwood is private, so there’s no out-of-state markup to waive. A family in Atlanta pays the same tuition as a family in Huntsville. Two things to know: Oakwood hadn’t posted 2026-27 rates when this page was built, so the figures above are its 2025-26 numbers, and the tuition package covers 12 to 16 hours. Every hour past 16 cost $580 in 2025-26.

FAQ: Cost of Attendance at Oakwood University

Why is the cost the same for in-state and out-of-state students?
Because Oakwood is a private university. There’s no state subsidy to lose by crossing a state line, so everyone starts from the same sticker price. Alabama residents can still add state money like the Alabama Student Grant Program on top.

What does the direct cost actually include?
Tuition for 12 to 16 hours, Oakwood’s mandatory per-semester fee, a standard residence hall room and a meal plan, which every on-campus student has to buy. It does not include books, travel or personal costs, and it doesn’t include student health insurance, which ran $1,300 a year in 2025-26 and can be waived with proof of other coverage.

Does Oakwood charge extra for taking more than 16 hours?
Yes. In 2025-26, each credit hour past 16 cost $580. That matters because Oakwood’s scholarships stop after eight semesters, so students who fall behind can’t just load up later without paying for it.

How does Oakwood expect the bill to be paid?
Under the 2025-26 schedule, students paid most of each semester’s balance up front (about 80%) and spread the remaining 20% over three monthly payments through a payment plan. Plan your cash flow around that front-loaded first payment.

Is the average net price really around $22,800?
That’s the federal average for 2022-23 after grants and scholarships. Here’s the part worth noticing: families earning under $30,000 paid about $21,400 on average, while families over $110,000 paid about $28,200. The gap between the lowest and highest income groups is small, which tells you Oakwood’s aid leans on merit more than need.

Does Oakwood have a net price calculator?
Oakwood has a Net Price Calculator page, but when we checked it in October 2026 there was no working calculator on it. Call Financial Aid at 256-726-7210 for an estimate, and have your GPA and test scores ready so they can place your student on the scholarship grid.

Do scholarships cover summer classes or off-campus housing?
No. Oakwood’s scholarships and grants cover fall and spring only, and Oakwood isn’t responsible for off-campus room and board.

📅 Oakwood’s Money Calendar (Simple Version)

  • Fall of senior year: Apply, and send an official ACT or SAT if your student wants a GOLD award.
  • March 1: Oakwood’s fall FAFSA priority date.
  • May 1: Pay the $200 intent-to-enroll fee to lock in the $1,000 Early Bird scholarship.
  • Summer: Oakwood checks the final transcript, and the award can change if the GPA dropped.

Parent rule of thumb: Oakwood says its scholarships are limited in slots, so treat “rolling” as “the earlier, the better.”

Automatic Merit Scholarships: Oakwood University

"Who Actually Wins" insights are pulled from external peer-sourced data where students and parents have reported real-world award results. Because colleges can change funding thresholds and deadlines at any time, always verify these details with the institution before finalizing your application strategy.

Automatic Merit FAQs (Oakwood University)

Does my student need an ACT or SAT to get merit at Oakwood?
No. The BLUE awards (Soaring, Striving, Forward, Challenge and Recruitment) are based on GPA alone. A score only matters for the GOLD awards, and it adds $1,000 to $2,000 a year at most GPA levels. The big jump is Platinum, where a 3.9 GPA plus a 26 ACT or 1260 SAT pays $6,250 a year more than Soaring.

Can my student get both a GOLD and a BLUE award?
Plan on one. Oakwood’s grid is built so each student lands on the highest tier they qualify for. Oakwood doesn’t spell this out in writing, so check the offer letter.

Does Oakwood superscore?
Oakwood’s grid says SAT calculations use the composite score, and it doesn’t mention superscoring the ACT. Plan on your student’s best single sitting counting.

What GPA does it take to keep the award?
For the top tiers, Oakwood’s rule steps up: a 2.5 GPA to renew for year two, 2.75 for year three and 3.0 for year four. Lower tiers renew at a 2.0. Either way, the student has to stay full-time every semester. Oakwood publishes both rules but not which awards fall under which, so confirm on the offer letter.

How long does the money last?
Up to eight fall and spring semesters, or three years for students in the engineering dual degree with UAH. Taking 15 hours a semester instead of 12 is how students finish on time, and Oakwood itself estimates a fifth year can cost a family about $30,000.

Is there money for valedictorians and salutatorians?
Yes. Oakwood’s Presidential Scholarship pays valedictorians $7,500 and salutatorians $5,500, spread over four years. The high school has to send official documentation of the rank.

Can Alabama families add state money?
Yes. Oakwood takes part in the Alabama Student Grant Program, worth up to $3,000 a year for Alabama residents at participating private colleges. It isn’t triggered by the FAFSA. Ask Oakwood’s aid office for the form.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)

Oakwood doesn’t run an essay-and-interview scholarship competition. Its biggest awards go to National Merit Semifinalists and Finalists, and they’re tied to a national competition your student enters through the PSAT/NMSQT in junior year. For almost every other family, the grid in the section above is where the real money is.

⚠  National Merit Semifinalists only.
Named a National Merit Semifinalist by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation and enrolling at Oakwood as a first-time freshman.

✚
Stacking & Combining
Covers tuition, so a Gold and Blue grid award would have nothing left to pay. Oakwood caps its own aid at tuition, room and board.

💡
Strategic Detail
Food and housing are not covered (about $10,656 billed in 2025-26). Renewal follows Oakwood's Tier 1 rule: 2.5, then 2.75, then 3.0 GPA. Confirm with admissions how to report Semifinalist status.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
Students named Semifinalists in September of senior year, roughly the top 1% of PSAT/NMSQT takers in each state. It is the more reachable of Oakwood's two National Merit awards and still pays full tuition.
Data last verified Oct 30, 2026.* GPA/test bands are estimates based on official selectivity and prior cohort profiles. "Who Actually Wins" insights are pulled from external peer-sourced data where students and parents have reported real-world award results. Because colleges can change funding thresholds and deadlines at any time, always verify these details with the institution before finalizing your application strategy.

❓ Flagship / Competitive Scholarship FAQs

What’s the difference between Oakwood’s two National Merit awards?
Semifinalists get full tuition for four years. Finalists get tuition plus on-campus housing for four years. Semifinalists are named in September of senior year and Finalists in February, so a student can qualify for the first and move up to the second.

Does the National Merit Finalist award cover meals?
No. It covers tuition and housing, but Oakwood requires residents to buy a meal plan, which ran about $5,400 to $6,000 a year in 2025-26. Budget for it.

How does a student claim the National Merit award?
Oakwood’s scholarship grid lists the awards but not the steps. Call admissions early in senior year to confirm how to report Semifinalist or Finalist status. See our National Merit guide for how the competition works.

What GPA keeps National Merit money?
Oakwood lists National Merit under its stepped renewal rule: a 2.5 GPA after year one, 2.75 after year two and 3.0 after year three, with full-time enrollment every semester.

Are there athletic scholarships?
Yes. Oakwood fields athletic teams, and athletic aid is handled separately. Contact the Athletic Department at 256-726-8385.

🧠 Parent Strategy: Don’t Let the Grid Be the Whole Conversation

Oakwood’s grid award shows up on its own. These smaller programs don’t, and two of them replace other aid instead of adding to it. Before your student says yes, run these checks with the aid office:

  1. Was the $200 intent fee paid by May 1 so the $1,000 Early Bird posts?
  2. Is the grid award under $3,000 a year? If so, compare it with My Road to Graduation.
  3. Does a parent work for an Adventist employer? Compare the Church Subsidy Match against what it would cancel.
  4. For Alabama residents: has the Alabama Student Grant form been turned in?

Parent translation: at Oakwood the right answer depends on which program wins the math, not on how many you collect.

💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships

These are the Oakwood programs most families never hear about. A couple reward a habit, like finishing 15 hours a semester or committing early, and one is built for families in Adventist ministry.

💡
Strategic Detail
Oakwood's 2025-26 tuition and fees sheet ties the $1,000 to paying the fee by May 1. The 2018 Early Bird card still linked on the scholarships page is outdated, so go by the tuition sheet.

Taking it can cancel Oakwood's grid merit, National Merit, transfer and GED awards, SEOG, and any Pell Grant above 50%.

📄
How to Apply
Confirm eligibility with Financial Aid (256-726-7210). A parent must receive 70% NAD tuition assistance; the student files the FAFSA, lives in an Oakwood residence hall with a meal plan and registers for 12+ hours.

The match is capped at 16 credit hours and awarded semester by semester. If a student later receives one of the excluded aid types, Oakwood reverses the match.
🕵

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

When does My Road to Graduation beat the grid award?
When the grid award is Recruitment ($1,500) or Challenge ($2,500). My Road pays $3,000 a year, $1,500 after each semester the student earns at least 15 Oakwood hours with a 2.0 GPA. It replaces every other Oakwood award, so a student on Forward ($5,000) or higher should keep the grid award. It also pays at the end of the semester, so the bill has to be covered first.

Who qualifies for the Church Subsidy Matching Scholarship?
Students with a parent who works for a Seventh-day Adventist organization and receives NAD tuition assistance at 70% of Oakwood’s tuition. Oakwood matches up to the other 30% of tuition and matriculation fees. The student has to live on campus, file the FAFSA and carry 12 or more hours.

Is the Church Subsidy Match always a good deal?
Not always. Accepting it can cancel grid merit, National Merit, SEOG and any Pell Grant above 50%. A student with a big grid award may come out ahead by keeping the merit award alongside the employer’s benefit, so ask Financial Aid (256-726-7210) to price both ways.

What is STEP?
The Student Training Entrepreneurial Program. Students commit to literature evangelism campaigns during fall and winter breaks, at least three times a week for 12 weeks, and Oakwood matches their commissions dollar for dollar up to $2,600. That’s as much as $5,200 toward the bill. Contact the Office of Spiritual Life at 256-726-7018.

My student left Oakwood with a balance. Can they come back?
Oakwood offers a Debt Amnesty Program for former students who haven’t attended in at least five years and want to finish their bachelor’s degree. Call Enrollment Management at 256-726-7356.

Where do outside scholarships like UNCF fit?
Oakwood is a UNCF member college, and UNCF runs many separate scholarship programs. Apply for as many as fit. Just know Oakwood counts outside money before its own and won’t let total aid pass tuition, room and board.

Honors Program at Oakwood University

Oakwood’s Honors Program is young. It launched in fall 2020 with its first cohort of 28 scholars. It’s a program rather than a separate honors college, and here’s the honest part up front: it doesn’t come with its own scholarship money. What it offers is a different kind of college experience that can pay off later, especially for students headed to graduate or medical school.

  • How to qualify: Meet at least two of three: a 3.7+ high school GPA, a 1150+ SAT or 25+ ACT, or a rigorous transcript with precalculus or calculus plus physics or at least one AP or dual-enrollment course.
  • What students get: Honors housing, interdisciplinary team projects, a research thesis, enhanced library support and an honors distinction on the transcript and at graduation.
  • The big one: At least one internship is required to graduate, and the program lines up internships with competitive pay.

Honors Scholarships & Fellowships

This institution does not offer designated Honors College scholarships at this time.

Oakwood doesn’t publish scholarships tied to Honors admission. Honors students still receive their Gold and Blue grid award like everyone else.

Deadline Note: Oakwood doesn’t post an Honors application deadline. Email the program director, Brandon Dent (bdent@oakwood.edu), early in senior year so your student isn’t guessing.
Pathways Worth Knowing (Beyond Honors)
  • Pre-Med: Oakwood is a partner school in UAB’s Burroughs Wellcome Scholars Early Assurance Program. Students with a 3.5 overall and 3.5 science GPA after three semesters can apply for early acceptance to UAB’s medical school, with preference for Alabama residents.
  • Pre-Dental: A 2022 partnership with UAB created an early-assurance path to UAB’s School of Dentistry for selected Oakwood sophomores.
  • Engineering: Students spend about three years at Oakwood, finish at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and earn two degrees. Oakwood scholarships stop after three years on this track.

Honors Program FAQs (Oakwood University)

Does the Honors Program come with a scholarship?
No. Honors students keep whatever grid award they earned, but the program itself doesn’t add money. Its value is the research, internship and transcript distinction.

Does my student need a test score to get in?
Not necessarily. The program takes students who meet two of its three bars, so a 3.7 GPA plus a rigorous transcript can qualify without a 25 ACT.

Is the internship really required?
Yes. Honors students must complete at least one internship to graduate, and they also present a thesis as a capstone.

Do Honors students live together?
Yes. Dedicated honors living space is one of the program’s listed benefits.

Who do we contact with questions?
Brandon Dent, the Honors Program Director, at bdent@oakwood.edu or 256-726-7351.

⭐ College Specialty

Oakwood is small, faith-centered and focused. With around 1,200 undergraduates on a sprawling 1,186-acre campus, it isn’t trying to be everything to everyone. What it does well, it does at a level that surprises people who only know it as a small Adventist school in Huntsville.

Nationally Known Program:
Biology and Pre-Medicine: Oakwood has long been one of the country’s top producers of Black applicants to medical school, a remarkable record for a school this size. It’s also a partner in UAB’s early-assurance medical program, which gives strong Oakwood students a path to medical school acceptance before senior year.
  • Music: The Aeolians, Oakwood’s concert choir, were named Choir of the World at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales in 2017. Music here is a tradition, not an extracurricular.
  • Theology and Religion: Oakwood’s School of Theology prepares pastors and ministry leaders for the Seventh-day Adventist church, which is the heart of why the university exists.
  • Engineering via UAH: Students earn a B.S. in applied mathematics at Oakwood, then finish one of seven engineering degrees at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, in the middle of one of the country’s biggest aerospace and defense job markets.
  • Health and Helping Professions: Nursing, dietetics and social work are accredited programs, and psychology and health sciences draw large numbers of students.
  • Business: Oakwood’s School of Business offers a practical option for students who want a career-ready degree in a close-knit setting.

✅ Wrapping It Up

Big picture? Oakwood is one of the easiest private colleges in the South to price before you apply. The grid is public, it’s driven mostly by GPA, and a student with a 3.75 can land $10,000 a year without ever taking the ACT. Where families get tripped up is the fine print: the May 1 Early Bird deadline, the 15-hour pace that keeps the money flowing for all eight semesters, and the programs like My Road to Graduation and the Church Subsidy Match that replace other aid instead of adding to it.

If your student wants a faith-centered HBCU with a real track record of sending graduates to medical school, a world-class choir and a straight path into Huntsville’s engineering economy, Oakwood deserves a serious look. Just run the numbers both ways before you sign anything, and make that call to Financial Aid early.

I started CollegeReadyParent while working through college costs for my own kid, and quickly figured out that the number a school advertises and the number a family actually pays are two very different things. Since then I’ve gone school by school pulling apart award letters, scholarship pages, and cost sheets to find what families are supposed to just know. This site is the version of that research I wish someone had handed me. More about Leo →
