🚀 Why UAH Plays by Different Rules

UAH is a research university of about 6,700 undergrads sitting next to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and Redstone Arsenal. It’s smaller than Alabama or Auburn, but its merit money works on a simple published grid: your GPA and best test scores pick the box, and the box picks the dollars. The twist most families miss is Tennessee. UAH treats Tennessee students who earn a scholarship like Alabama residents, which makes it one of the cheapest out-of-state options in the Southeast for those families.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at UAH (Read This First)

  • Tennessee families: the scholarship is the ticket to in-state tuition. Earn any award on the grid and you’re billed the Alabama rate. Miss the grid (say, a 3.3 GPA with a 22 ACT) and you pay full out-of-state tuition, unless you live in one of the nine border counties.
  • Test-optional only works if your GPA is 3.5 or higher. No-score awards also top out lower: $5,000 for Alabama students and $13,000 out-of-state. A 3.0 to 3.49 student needs an ACT 24+ or SAT 1160+ to get anything.
  • Academic scholarships pay tuition only. Even Saturn V (full tuition) leaves fees, housing, and meals on your bill.
  • May 15, 2027 is the last day a new score counts. UAH superscores (and ignores ACT Science), so a retake in the spring can move your student up a tier. After May 15, the award is locked.
  • Donor money has its own clock. Have the admissions file complete by Nov 20, 2026 and the UAH Scholarship Application in by Dec 15, 2026. It’s one application for every donor award, and late applicants only see what’s left.

FAQ

Is this college test-optional? Yes, for admission. University of Alabama in Huntsville is test-optional for admission, but scholarships can work differently (see the next question).

Do you need test scores for scholarships at University of Alabama in Huntsville? Test-optional to get in, but no-score merit needs a 3.5+ GPA and pays less, and a 3.0 to 3.49 student needs an ACT 24+ or SAT 1160+. Superscores count; ACT Science does not.

What is the middle 50% ACT/SAT? ACT: 23-31; SAT: 1200-1370.

Average net price? About $18,796/year after aid.

Does this school use waivers/reciprocity? Yes. Institutional waivers are available.

💰 Cost of Attendance at University of Alabama in Huntsville: 2026–2027 Rates

Figures verified against official sources in October 2026.

📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest University of Alabama in Huntsville has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.

Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly $500 to $1,300 more than the in-state total below. $800 to $2,100 more than the out-of-state total below.

In-State: billed cost per year
$26,332
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $13,380
Housing & meals (typical) $12,952
Total billed cost $26,332
Out-of-State: billed cost per year
$41,462
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $28,510
Housing & meals (typical) $12,952
Total billed cost $41,462

That is $15,130 more per year than Alabama residents pay, before any waivers or scholarships.

Average federal net price: $18,796 per year. This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, for in-state students only, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.

Out-of-state families: this average does not include you. Run the college's own net price calculator for a number based on your situation.

📌 Regional Tuition & Waiver Options

Tennessee families get a rare break. Any Tennessee resident who earns a UAH freshman academic scholarship is charged in-state tuition, and the award itself follows the Alabama grid. Students from nine nearby counties (Bedford, Coffee, Franklin, Giles, Lawrence, Lincoln, Marion, Marshall, and Moore) get in-state tuition even with no scholarship at all.

Families from every other state pay non-resident tuition. The out-of-state award grid ($5,000 to $22,000 a year) is how UAH closes that gap.

What the bill looks like after the grid (2026-2027 direct costs)

Here’s the math on a few common scenarios. These are UAH’s billed costs only (tuition, average fees, housing, and a meal plan), before any grants, donor awards, or Space Camp money.

Student Award Left to Pay
Alabama, Saturn V (4.0, ACT 31+)Full tuition~$15,310
Alabama, Juno I$2,000~$24,330
Tennessee, Juno I (billed in-state)$2,000~$24,330
Out-of-state, Saturn V$22,000~$19,460
Out-of-state, Juno I$5,000~$36,460

Notice the Tennessee row. A Tennessee student on the bottom tier pays the same as an Alabama student, which is about $12,000 less per year than an out-of-state student on the same tier.

FAQ: Cost of Attendance at UAH

Can Tennessee students really pay in-state tuition at UAH?
Yes, in two ways. Any Tennessee resident who earns a UAH freshman academic scholarship is billed in-state tuition. Students from Bedford, Coffee, Franklin, Giles, Lawrence, Lincoln, Marion, Marshall, or Moore County get in-state tuition even without a scholarship. For everyone else in Tennessee, the scholarship cutoff is the line between roughly $11,000 and $26,000 in tuition.

Does UAH have a regional tuition deal for other states?
Not one we could confirm. Outside of Tennessee, non-residents pay out-of-state tuition and rely on the out-of-state scholarship grid. If your student wants a major your home state doesn’t offer, check the SREB Academic Common Market search for your state before assuming it applies.

Why does the fee line say “average”?
Because UAH charges per-credit fees that depend on which college teaches the course. Every student pays a $42 per-hour infrastructure fee. Engineering and nursing courses add $46 per hour, science courses $40, business $27, and arts and humanities $24. An engineering-heavy schedule costs more in fees than a liberal arts one, so budget a little above the average if your student is in engineering or nursing.

Is tuition the same whether my student takes 12 or 18 hours?
Yes. Tuition is a flat rate from 12 to 18 hours a semester. Taking 15 to 18 hours costs the same tuition as 12 and keeps your student on track to finish in four years, when the scholarship runs out. The per-hour fees still go up with each class, though.

Will a UAH scholarship cover housing?
Not the academic grid awards. UAH says its academic scholarships pay tuition only. Housing and meals (about $12,950 a year) have to come from savings, grants, donor awards, or loans. First-year students are required to live on campus unless exempt.

Is the average net price really about $18,800?
That’s the federal College Scorecard average for students who get grants or scholarships, and it reflects in-state families. Out-of-state families should use the direct-cost table above and UAH’s net price calculator instead, since the federal number doesn’t cover them.

📅 UAH Scholarship Timeline (Simple Version)

  • By Nov 20, 2026: Admissions file complete (application, transcript, scores) to guarantee freshman consideration for donor scholarships.
  • Dec 15, 2026: Priority date for the UAH Scholarship Application (one application for every donor award).
  • Apr 1, 2027: FAFSA priority date for state and federal grants.
  • May 15, 2027: Last day new test scores or transcripts can upgrade the grid award.
  • May 31, 2027: National Merit Finalists must be admitted and list UAH as their college choice.

Parent rule of thumb: the grid award is automatic, but everything stacked on top of it runs on deadlines. Treat Nov 20 as your real deadline.

Automatic Merit Scholarships: UAH

Every admitted freshman lands somewhere on UAH’s grid based on GPA and test scores. There’s no separate application. Five tiers are named after rockets, from Juno I up to Saturn V. UAH superscores the ACT and SAT and does not count ACT Science. Students without scores can still qualify with a 3.5+ GPA. Alabama and Tennessee students use the in-state grid ($2,000 up to full tuition); everyone else uses the out-of-state grid ($5,000 to $22,000).

Residency
Based on published cutoffs for entering freshmen. Always verify with the college before finalizing plans.
Start with your state. The awards in this first group come from the state, not the college. They are decided by residency and the FAFSA, and they stack on top of whatever automatic merit award the college gives below. If you live out of state, use the toggle above and these will step aside.
State AidAutomatic
Alabama Student Assistance Program
📅 Deadline: FAFSA as early as possible; no separate application
✓ Renews
$300–$5,000/yr
✔ Stackable
Alabama resident with financial need on the FAFSA; amount set by each college's aid office from a limited state allocation

✚
Stacking & Combining
Alabama's only broad need grant. $300 to $5,000 a year, decided by the college, and it runs out. Stacks with Pell and with every college award.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
Most winners: Low-income families who file the FAFSA in October. There is no separate form and no published cutoff; the aid office packages it from a fixed pot, so the late filers are the ones who get nothing.
State AidApp Required
Alabama G.I. Dependent Scholarship
📅 Deadline: Apply through the ADVA portal before the semester starts; not retroactive
✓ Renews (5 yrs)
Varies
✔ Stackable
⚠  Dependents of disabled Alabama veterans
Child, stepchild, spouse, or unremarried widow of an Alabama veteran rated 40% or more service-connected disabled; FAFSA each year; payer of last resort

✚
Stacking & Combining
In-state tuition up to the federal Tuition Assistance cap per credit hour (currently $400), plus up to $1,000 a semester for books and fees. Children get five academic years. Paid after all other aid, so it fills whatever gap is left.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
Most winners: Dependents of veterans with a 40% or higher VA rating who get the ADVA application in before the first semester. The deadline is the problem: it is not granted retroactively, so a family that discovers it in October has lost the fall.
State AidApp Required
Alabama National Guard Educational Assistance Program
📅 Deadline: Each term, with Military Department and aid office signatures
✓ Renews (2 GPA)
Varies
✔ Stackable
⚠  Alabama National Guard members
🏫 2.0+ GPAActive member in good standing of an Alabama National Guard unit; 2.0 GPA; FAFSA on file; at least $100 of cost left after other aid; term-by-term approval

✚
Stacking & Combining
Tuition and instructional fees up to a cap set each year at the median public four-year tuition. Payer of last resort, so it applies after Pell, federal TA, and college aid.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
Guard members who reapply every single term with both signatures. It is reliable money for the students who keep the paperwork moving, and it disappears for a semester the moment someone forgets.
One award, not a pile. Colleges apply your student's single best automatic award. Automatic scholarships almost never stack with each other, though some stack with housing, departmental, or outside money. The stacking notes on each card tell you which.

✚
Stacking & Combining
This is the one academic award a student gets from the grid. The Space Camp Scholarship and donor awards from the UAH Scholarship Application can sit on top, and since this award already covers tuition, that extra money goes toward fees, housing, and meals.

💡
Strategic Detail
Covers full in-state tuition for 12 to 18 hours each fall and spring. UAH academic scholarships pay tuition only, so fees, housing, and meals stay on the family bill. New scores or transcripts received after May 15, 2027 will not raise the award.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
Alabama students with a 4.0+ GPA and a 31+ ACT or 1390+ SAT superscore. Because UAH superscores, a student who builds a 31 across two or three sittings lands here.

"Who Actually Wins" insights are pulled from external peer-sourced data where students and parents have reported real-world award results. Automatic Merit FAQs (UAH)

What does it take to earn Saturn V?
A 4.0+ high school GPA and a 31+ ACT or 1390+ SAT superscore. For Alabama and Tennessee students, that’s full tuition for four years. Out-of-state students get $22,000 a year.

Can my student get merit money without test scores?
Yes, with a 3.5+ GPA. A test-optional student can reach $5,000 a year in-state (Jupiter C, with a 4.0) or $13,000 out-of-state. A student with a 3.0 to 3.49 GPA needs an ACT 24+ or SAT 1160+ to get any award. If your student’s score would land in a higher box, sending it almost always pays more.

Does UAH superscore?
Yes. UAH builds a superscore from the English, Math, and Reading sections across sittings and leaves ACT Science out. A student sitting at 30 who raises one section on a retake can jump from Atlas D to Saturn V.

Can the award go up after my student is admitted?
Yes, until May 15, 2027. New scores or an updated transcript received by then are checked for an upgrade. Anything after that date doesn’t count.

How do Tennessee students fit in?
They use the same grid as Alabama students and get billed in-state tuition when they qualify for any tier. A Tennessee student on Juno I gets $2,000 plus about $15,100 a year off the tuition rate.

How do the awards renew?
They run for four years (fall and spring), renewing each semester with full-time enrollment and satisfactory academic progress. UAH doesn’t publish a single renewal GPA, so check the award description in your student’s myUAH account.

Is the FAFSA required for these?
No. UAH doesn’t require the FAFSA for scholarships. File it anyway if you want to be considered for Pell, the Alabama Student Assistance Program, or federal loans.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)

UAH doesn’t run a big interview-weekend scholarship like some flagships do. Its “competitive” money comes from two places: the National Merit UAH Platinum package for Finalists, and hundreds of donor-funded awards handed out through one single application. That second one is where most families leave money on the table, because there’s nothing to choose and nothing to remind you.

✅ Can You Stack Scholarships at UAH?

Aid Type Stacks with Grid Award? UAH Parent Translation
Grid Award (Juno I to Saturn V) N/A One award per student, the highest box you qualify for. Tuition only.
National Merit UAH Platinum Usually replaces Both pay tuition, so expect Platinum to take the grid award’s place. The extras (housing, fees, study abroad) are what you gain.
Donor Scholarships (single application) Generally yes These are the gap fillers. Since grid money stops at tuition, donor awards are often what pays for fees and housing.
Space Camp Scholarship Yes UAH says outright that it stacks with academic merit.
Pell, ASAP, and other grants Yes Need-based grants sit on top of merit. ASAP comes from a small state pot, so file the FAFSA early.

The honest take: UAH’s biggest dollars are automatic. The competitive side is less about winning one huge award and more about collecting a few smaller ones that cover what the grid won’t. A student with average grades but a specific profile (a certain major, hometown, or activity) has a real shot, and the only way to find out is to submit the application.

Donor awards generally stack with the grid award and with Space Camp. Because academic awards are tuition only, donor money is often what covers fees, housing, and meals.

📄
How to Apply
Get admitted first. Then log in to the UAH Scholarship Application with your UAH credentials and submit one application; it matches you to every donor award you qualify for, and you cannot apply for individual awards. Have every admissions checklist item in by Nov 20, 2026 to guarantee freshman consideration, and submit the scholarship application by Dec 15, 2026.

💡
Strategic Detail
Awards are funded by alumni and friends of UAH and vary in amount and renewal terms. Most offers for the next year go out by May 1, with more made later as funds open up. UAH does not send rejection emails, so watch the UAH email account and the financial aid offer.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
Students who submit by the December priority date, because the first selection round considers them for everything. Major, hometown, leadership, and activities matter here, so a student with an average GPA but a specific profile can still win.

❓ Flagship / Competitive Scholarship FAQs

What does the National Merit UAH Platinum package include?
Full tuition for up to 18 hours a semester for eight semesters, one year of on-campus housing, up to $500 a year in course fees, and a one-time $3,000 allowance for a UAH-led summer study-abroad program. Your student has to be a National Merit Finalist, be admitted to UAH by May 31, and list UAH as their college choice with National Merit by May 31. See our National Merit guide for how the program works.

How do I apply for UAH’s donor scholarships?
After your student is admitted, they log in to the UAH Scholarship Application with their UAH credentials and fill out one application. It matches them to every donor award they qualify for. You can’t apply for specific awards, so the application itself is the whole job.

Which date matters: Nov 20 or Dec 15?
Both. Nov 20, 2026 is when the admissions file (application, transcript, and scores) needs to be complete for guaranteed freshman consideration. Dec 15, 2026 is the priority date for the scholarship application itself. Students who make the priority date are considered in the first round for every award.

We missed the priority date. Is it worth applying?
Yes. UAH keeps awarding after the first round as money frees up, so late applications are still considered for whatever’s left. You just won’t see the full menu.

How will we know if my student won something?
Watch the UAH email account and the financial aid offer. Most offers for the next year go out by May 1, and UAH doesn’t send rejection emails, so no news isn’t final until the year starts.

My student’s GPA is average. Should they still apply?
Yes. Many donor awards look at leadership, service, hometown, intended major, or membership in specific groups, not just grades. Our Essay Toolkit and Brag Sheet Builder help organize what to put in front of the committee.

🧠 Parent Strategy: The Huntsville Head Start

Some of UAH’s best money is tied to things families do before senior year and then forget about.

  1. Did your teen go to Space Camp? Advanced Space Academy, Aviation Challenge Mach III, and Advanced Cyber Academy graduates (May 8, 2025 or later) get a certificate worth up to $8,000 at UAH. Find it.
  2. Still in high school? Every UAH dual enrollment class comes with a scholarship that covers half the tuition. That’s college credit at a discount before freshman year even starts.
  3. Once admitted: submit the UAH Scholarship Application by Dec 15. It’s one form for every donor award.
  4. Junior year of college: students working in a NASA-related research lab can apply for Alabama Space Grant money.

Parent translation: the grid award shows up on its own. Everything else on this page only shows up if somebody remembers to ask for it.

💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships

These awards aren’t on the merit grid, and most families never hear about them. They’re small next to Saturn V, but they stack, and they’re the money that ends up covering fees and books.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

How does the Space Camp Scholarship work?
Students who finish an eligible Space Camp program get a scholarship certificate. Once they’re admitted to UAH as a first-time freshman and enroll full-time right after high school, UAH awards $1,000 a year (if billed in-state) or $2,000 a year (if billed out-of-state) for up to four years. It renews with a 2.5 UAH GPA, full-time enrollment, and 24 credit hours each year.

Does the Space Camp Scholarship stack with the grid award?
Yes. UAH says it can be combined with academic merit scholarships. Each student gets one Space Camp scholarship, no matter how many sessions they attended.

Which Space Camp programs count?
Aviation Challenge Mach III, Advanced Space Academy Expedition, U.S. Advanced Cyber Academy, or a comparable high school Space Camp program at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, completed on or after May 8, 2025. Programs for younger kids don’t qualify.

What’s the dual enrollment discount?
UAH gives dual enrollment students a scholarship equal to half the tuition for each class. Students need at least a 3.0 GPA. It’s worth a look for juniors and seniors near Huntsville or taking online courses, and those credits can carry into a UAH degree.

What’s the Alabama Space Grant scholarship?
It’s a NASA and State of Alabama award of up to $1,500 a year for juniors and seniors at Alabama colleges who are doing NASA-related STEM research. It renews once. It isn’t a freshman award, but it’s a reason to get your student into a research lab early. The consortium is run out of UAH.

Honors College at UAH

The UAH Honors College works with any major and doesn’t add extra coursework. Students take Honors versions of classes they’d take anyway, finish a capstone project, and get smaller classes along the way. For high-stat students, getting in can be automatic.

  • Automatic admission: admitted freshmen with a 3.75+ high school GPA and an ACT of 30+ get in without a separate Honors application.
  • Everyone else: a holistic review of transcripts, activities, leadership, and essays. UAH has listed a 3.5 GPA as the usual floor.
  • Test-optional: scores are considered if sent but not required. Recent admits had a middle 50% ACT of 26 to 34 and an average high school GPA of 4.2.
  • No application fee.

Honors College Scholarships & Fellowships

This institution does not offer designated Honors College scholarships at this time.

The money question, answered straight: we didn’t find a dedicated Honors scholarship for incoming freshmen at UAH. Honors students get their money from the same grid and donor application as everyone else. Honors actually adds a cost: a $220 student service fee each fall and spring ($440 a year). The payoff is access, not a check: priority registration, Honors housing eligibility, and a shot at research and study-abroad grants once your student is in.
What Honors Students Get
  • Priority registration: first pick of class times, which matters in engineering and nursing sequences.
  • Honors housing: eligibility for Honors residence options.
  • Mentoring and extra advising: student mentors plus Honors advisors on top of regular major advising.
  • Research money: eligibility for Honors research and study-abroad grants, plus a published capstone project or thesis.

Honors College FAQs (UAH)

Is Honors admission automatic?
For admitted freshmen with a 3.75+ GPA and an ACT of 30 or higher, yes. Everyone else applies through a holistic review that looks at grades, activities, leadership, and essays.

Does Honors come with a scholarship?
Not a dedicated one for incoming freshmen that we could find. Students still get their grid award and can win donor scholarships through the regular application. Honors adds a $220 fee each fall and spring.

Does Honors mean a heavier workload?
Not more classes. Students complete at least 24 Honors credit hours by graduation, mostly by taking Honors sections of courses already in their degree plan, plus a capstone thesis or project.

Can my student join Honors after freshman year?
Yes. Current UAH students and transfers with a 3.25+ GPA are invited to apply, and applications are rolling.

Can out-of-state students join?
Yes. Honors admission doesn’t depend on residency.

⭐ College Specialty

Huntsville calls itself the Rocket City, and UAH is the university that grew up inside that story. It started as a place to train engineers for the Army and NASA teams on Redstone Arsenal, and it still runs that way: NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center is down the road, and Cummings Research Park, full of defense and aerospace companies, wraps around campus. For a student who wants to work in space, defense, or tech, the employers are close enough to bike to.

Nationally Known Program:
Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering: UAH ranks tenth in the nation for federally funded aerospace engineering research, and it has posted five or more research programs in the national top 25 for 13 straight years. Engineering is the largest college on campus, producing more than a quarter of all UAH bachelor’s degrees. Students have real chances to work on propulsion, rocket components, and space hardware alongside NASA and industry partners.
  • Computer Science and Cybersecurity: One of UAH’s top-ranked research areas, with a pipeline into the defense and intelligence contractors that fill Huntsville.
  • Atmospheric Science and Space Science: Also a top-10 federal research program. UAH is home to the National Space Science and Technology Center and runs serious work on severe weather and space physics.
  • Nursing: UAH’s largest single major, with a simulation lab and steady demand from Huntsville’s hospitals.
  • Business: About one in five UAH degrees, with many graduates heading into program management and contracting roles across the city’s defense economy.

✅ Wrapping It Up

Big picture? UAH is a small research university that punches way above its size, especially in engineering, computer science, and anything that leaves the atmosphere. The money is easy to predict: find your student’s box on the grid and you know the award before you ever apply.

The families who do best here are the ones who catch the extras. For Tennessee families, the scholarship is really a ticket to in-state tuition, so that 3.5 GPA or 24 ACT line is worth fighting for. For everyone, a spring retake before May 15 can bump the award a tier, and the Space Camp certificate in the junk drawer can be worth up to $8,000. One more thing: the grid only pays tuition. Plan to cover housing with the single donor application and early FAFSA money, and UAH can come in well under what families expect for a school with this kind of job pipeline.
