Harding is the largest private university in Arkansas, a Churches of Christ school in Searcy about 50 miles northeast of Little Rock. Admission is rolling and roughly 7 in 10 applicants get in. Faith is woven into daily life here, and a surprising amount of the scholarship money is tied to it, from Christian school graduates to ministers’ kids to church matching. Because Harding is private, a family from Texas pays the same tuition as a family from Searcy.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Harding (Read This First)

  • Test scores are required. Plenty of college sites list Harding as test-optional. Harding’s own admissions page says an official ACT, SAT or CLT is required, and scores printed on a transcript don’t count.
  • The merit chart is a blend, not a cutoff. Harding mixes the test score (55%) and GPA (45%) into one number. An 18 ACT only earns money with about a 3.6 GPA. A 3.0 student needs a 23, and below that the chart pays $0.
  • Retesting can raise the award after you commit. Harding counts new scores through July after senior year, so a summer ACT can move a student up a tier.
  • Trustee replaces everything Harding pays. The full-tuition Trustee Scholarship can’t be combined with any other Harding scholarship or discount. Arkansas state aid still stacks on top.
  • The Harding Guarantee has two gates. Free tuition is real, but only for Arkansans who qualify for the maximum Pell Grant and also hold Academic Challenge or the Governor’s Scholarship (SAMS and FAFSA by July 1).

FAQ

Is this college test-optional? No. Harding University is test-required for admission.

Do you need test scores for scholarships at Harding University? Official ACT, SAT or CLT required for admission and merit. Merit uses a blended score with GPA, and retests through July after senior year can raise the award.

💰 Cost of Attendance at Harding University: 2026–2027 Rates

Figures verified against official sources in October 2026.

📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest Harding University has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.

Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly $800 to $2,000 more than the total below.

✔ Same price for every student, no matter which state you live in.

All students: billed cost per year
$39,950
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $29,550
Housing & meals (typical) $10,400
Total billed cost $39,950

Average federal net price: $22,806 per year. This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.

Reading Harding’s Price Tag the Right Way

Harding charges tuition by the credit hour ($945), and the yearly number assumes 15 hours a semester. The technology fee works the same way, so it shrinks if your student takes fewer hours. The dorm fee even includes three loads of laundry a week. What’s not in the total: textbooks and any lab or equipment fees for your student’s major. So the bill you’ll actually see from Harding sits close to the $39,950 sticker before aid, and most families never pay that.

FAQ: Cost of Attendance at Harding University

Does Harding charge out-of-state students more?
No. Harding is private, so every student pays the same tuition no matter what state they come from. The only cost difference by state comes from Arkansas aid. Arkansas families can add Academic Challenge and the Governor’s awards on top of Harding’s money, and families from other states can’t.

What do families actually pay at Harding?
The federal average net price was about $22,800 in 2023-24, after grants and scholarships. It ranged from roughly $15,400 for families earning under $30,000 to about $26,300 for families over $110,000. That’s a narrower spread than many colleges, because a lot of Harding’s aid is merit and faith-based rather than strictly need-based.

Is the Harding Guarantee free tuition for everyone?
No. It covers whatever tuition is left after other aid, but only for Arkansas residents who qualify for the maximum Pell Grant and hold Academic Challenge or the Governor’s Scholarship. It never covers housing, meals or fees.

Can my student take fewer hours to save money?
Tuition goes down with fewer hours, but be careful. Harding’s academic scholarships require 12 hours, and Arkansas Academic Challenge requires 15 hours every semester after the first fall. Dropping to 12 can cost more in lost state aid than it saves in tuition.

Is there a way to lock in today’s tuition for a younger child?
Yes. Harding runs a Prepaid Tuition Certificate plan that lets families buy tuition credit at today’s per-hour rate for a child who hasn’t started college yet.

Do freshmen have to live on campus?
Many of Harding’s biggest awards (Trustee, National Merit) require living in campus housing to keep them. Budget for the $10,400 housing and meal package rather than assuming a cheaper off-campus setup.

📅 Harding Scholarship Timeline (Simple Version)

  • October 1: FAFSA opens. File early for the Harding Grant and the clearest award letter.
  • Before January 1: Official scores must be in for Trustee Scholarship consideration.
  • Early January: Trustee application materials due (events run late January and early February).
  • March 1: Governor’s Distinguished Scholarship deadline in SAMS (Arkansas students).
  • July 1: Academic Challenge and FAFSA deadline in SAMS. This also gates the Harding Guarantee.
  • Through July after senior year: New ACT, SAT or CLT scores can still raise the academic award.

Parent rule of thumb: at Harding, the fall of senior year decides the Trustee shot, and the summer after graduation can still decide the merit tier.

Automatic Merit Scholarships at Harding University

Harding’s Academic Achievement Scholarship pays $7,000 to $11,000 a year for four years with no separate application. The catch is how it’s figured: Harding blends the test score and GPA into one number, so the same ACT can be worth $11,000 for one student and $0 for another. Use the quick lookup below before you trust any “minimum ACT” you see online.

Worked out from the formula behind Harding’s 2026-2027 scholarship chart. SAT and CLT convert to the ACT column (for example, 1390 SAT or 100 CLT counts as a 31). Harding rounds GPA to the nearest 0.05, and anything under a 2.5 GPA or an 18 ACT earns no academic award. Plug your exact numbers into Harding’s calculator on its scholarships page to confirm.

$2,000 freshman year, $4,000 sophomore and junior, $5,000 senior. Challenge PLUS adds up to $1,500 a semester for families with a Student Aid Index under 8,000. At Harding it also unlocks the Harding Guarantee for maximum-Pell students. Stacks with all Harding awards.

🕵
Who Actually Wins
Most Arkansas students headed to Harding qualify on grades alone. The losses come on hours: the state wants 15 hours every semester after the first fall, while Harding only needs 12 to keep its own merit, so a student who drops to 12 keeps the Harding award and loses the state money (and, for max-Pell students, the Guarantee with it).

Homeschool and private-school graduates, a big share of Harding's class, cannot use the diploma route.
One award, not a pile. Colleges apply your student's single best automatic award. Automatic scholarships almost never stack with each other, though some stack with housing, departmental, or outside money. The stacking notes on each card tell you which.

🕵
Who Actually Wins
Most winners: Arkansans from the lowest-income households: the student has to qualify for the maximum Pell Grant, which generally means a Student Aid Index of zero or below, and has to be an Academic Challenge or Governor's Scholars recipient. Families just above the max-Pell line get nothing from it, and a student who loses Academic Challenge (for example, finishing freshman year with 24 hours instead of 27) loses the Guarantee too.
Data last verified Oct 29, 2026.* GPA/test bands are estimates based on official selectivity and prior cohort profiles. "Who Actually Wins" insights are pulled from external peer-sourced data where students and parents have reported real-world award results. Because colleges can change funding thresholds and deadlines at any time, always verify these details with the institution before finalizing your application strategy.

Note: Each student gets one academic tier. The faith and family add-ons (Christian school graduate, homeschool, ministers and educators, missionary children) can stack on top, but all of Harding’s own money together stops at full tuition. Arkansas state aid isn’t Harding money, so it sits outside that cap.

Automatic Merit FAQs (Harding University)

Does Harding superscore the ACT for scholarships?
Harding says ACT superscores count for Trustee Scholarship screening. It doesn’t publish a superscore rule for the academic scholarship chart, so ask your admissions counselor which score they used before you accept the offer.

Can a better test score raise the award after my student is admitted?
Yes. Harding lets students retest through July after senior year and will bump the award if the new score moves them into a higher tier. That’s unusual and worth a summer test date if your student is close to a cutoff.

Why did a 3.5 GPA with a 31 ACT only get $8,000?
Because the chart blends the two numbers. A 3.5 with a 31 scores just under the $9,000 line. That same combination is exactly the Trustee interview cutoff, so those students should apply for Trustee rather than settle.

How does the National Merit scholarship work?
Semifinalists who name Harding as their first-choice college with National Merit get full tuition. Finalists get full tuition plus $2,000 a year. Both require a 3.25 GPA and campus housing to renew, and both come with automatic Honors College admission.

Do Christian school and homeschool graduates get extra?
Yes, automatically. Graduates of NCSA or CESA member schools get $1,000 a year, and homeschool graduates get a Homeschool Scholarship (Harding doesn’t publish the amount). Both stack on the academic tier up to full tuition.

What does it take to keep the academic scholarship?
Full-time enrollment (12 hours) and a 3.0 college GPA each year, for up to four years or eight semesters.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)

Harding’s headline award is the Trustee Scholarship: full tuition for eight semesters plus a spot in the Honors College. To be invited, a student needs a 3.5 GPA and a 31 ACT (superscore counts), 1390 SAT, or 100 CLT, with official scores in before January 1. Then comes a real application and a two-day campus event with an interview. Recent classes have had about 17 to 20 Trustee Scholars a year.

📝 What the Trustee Application Really Looks Like

  • One-page resume. Single-spaced with a minimum font size. Go over the limit and Harding won’t read it.
  • Three recommendation letters, two pages max each. Pick people who together can speak to all four criteria.
  • A 750 to 1,000 word statement of purpose in the student’s own words. Harding specifically bans AI-written essays.
  • A two-person interview in business attire during a Thursday to Friday campus event, with up to two parents invited.

Harding judges four things: intellectual curiosity, how faith shapes the student’s sense of calling, what they’ll add to campus life, and how they’ve grown through hard experiences. The deadline is early January, but Harding’s page still shows last cycle’s dates next to the 2027 events, so confirm the exact day with your admissions counselor.

✅ Can You Stack Scholarships at Harding?

Faith and family add-ons Yes, to a cap Christian school, homeschool, ministers and educators, and missionary children awards stack, but Harding money stops at full tuition.
Arkansas state aid Yes Academic Challenge and Governor’s awards aren’t Harding money, so they stack even with Trustee and can go toward housing.
Harding Guarantee Fills the gap For qualifying Arkansans, it pays whatever tuition is left after everything else.

Outside Trustee, Harding’s competitive money is small and specific: a leadership and service award and three engineering scholarships, neither with a published dollar amount. For most families the real decisions are the academic tier and whether to chase Trustee.

Qualifying students who treat the application like a real job interview. Incoming engineering majors who download and submit the application from the Department of Engineering and Physics. With three awards a year the field is small, and students who can point to robotics, design projects, or strong math and physics grades are the typical fit.

❓ Flagship / Competitive Scholarship FAQs

When is the Trustee Scholarship deadline?
Materials are due in early January, about two to three weeks before your student’s chosen event weekend. Official test scores must reach Harding before January 1. Decisions go out by March 2, and winners accept by April 3.

If my student doesn’t win Trustee, do they lose their academic scholarship?
No. The academic scholarship is automatic, so a student who interviews and isn’t selected keeps whatever tier their scores earned.

Can Trustee Scholars get money for housing?
Not from Harding, since Trustee blocks other Harding-funded aid. Arkansas students can use Academic Challenge and the Governor’s Distinguished Scholarship (up to $10,000 a year combined) toward housing and meals on top of Trustee.

What does it take to keep Trustee?
Full-time enrollment, a 3.25 GPA, living on campus, and staying active in the Honors College.

How do I apply for the Christian Leadership and Service Scholarship?
It’s a separate application linked from Harding’s scholarships page. Harding doesn’t publish the amount, so treat it as a bonus. Our Brag Sheet Builder helps organize church and service work for it and for the Trustee resume.

Are there engineering scholarships for freshmen?
Yes. The Crews Family Endowment funds three scholarships a year for incoming engineering majors. The application is on the Department of Engineering and Physics webpage.

🧠 Parent Strategy: The Church and Family Checklist

At Harding, a lot of the extra money depends on who your family is rather than on test scores. Most of it never shows up unless you ask. Run through this list before you compare award letters:

  1. Does a parent work full-time as a minister, missionary, or Christian school or college employee? File the Christian Ministers and Educators request form.
  2. Are you serving as missionaries overseas? Add the Missionary Children grant ($4,000 a year). It stacks with the one above.
  3. Is your family in a Church of Christ? Apply to Women for Harding by February 15.
  4. Does your church give scholarships? Ask them to join Harding’s Church Match (up to $500 a year).
  5. Did a grandparent or parent ever attend Harding? Apply for the Class of ’72 Legacy award.

Parent translation: these awards stack, but all of Harding’s own money together tops out at full tuition. Families already near that line should focus on housing and meal costs instead.

💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships

These awards aren’t part of the automatic chart, and most need a form, an audition, a portfolio, or a FAFSA. The Harding Grant is the easiest one on the list: $3,000 a year for admitted students who show need on the FAFSA, with no separate application.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

Do I need a separate application for the Harding Grant?
No. File the FAFSA (Harding’s code is 001097) starting October 1. Harding considers you for the $3,000 grant along with federal and state need-based aid, and it shows up on your award letter.

Can the Ministers and Educators award and the Missionary Children grant be combined?
Yes. Harding says outright that the $4,000 Missionary Children grant stacks with the Ministers and Educators scholarship. Together with everything else, Harding’s money still caps at full tuition.

Are there scholarships for art, music and English majors?
Yes. Art and Design pays $600 to $1,200 a year with a portfolio due April 3. Music awards go by audition, with forms from music@harding.edu and a May 1 target. English offers a one-time freshman award with an August 23 deadline.

We live in Northwest Arkansas. Is there anything specific for us?
The Carter Admissions Scholarship goes to Northwest Arkansas students with financial need. Harding mails the application to qualifying seniors in the spring, so make sure your FAFSA is on file.

What if my student transfers in from another college?
Transfers with 14 or more hours and a 2.5 GPA get $4,000 to $8,000 a year if they live on campus, and much less off campus. A student who spent only one full-time term elsewhere is treated as a freshman for scholarships instead.

Does Harding take the Yellow Ribbon Program?
Yes. GI Bill benefits plus Harding’s contribution cover full tuition and fees for qualifying students. Harding counts its own scholarships first, then Yellow Ribbon fills what’s left.

Honors College at Harding University

The Harding Honors College takes about 100 new students a year, roughly 1 in 10 undergraduates, and has around 400 members in nearly 80 majors. Here’s what parents should know: at Harding, the big money comes first and Honors admission follows from it. Honors itself doesn’t hand out tuition scholarships.

  • Automatic entry as a freshman: Trustee Scholars, Heritage Scholars, National Merit Scholars, and students with a perfect ACT or SAT.
  • Everyone else: Can apply after earning a 3.25 GPA at midterm of the first semester, or a 3.25 cumulative GPA in any later semester.
  • Transfers: Can apply on arrival with a 3.25 GPA from their previous college.
About the Heritage Scholarship: Harding’s Honors reports show a group of Heritage Scholars each year (28 in fall 2025), and they’re admitted to Honors automatically. Harding doesn’t publish the criteria or the amount anywhere we could verify. If your student has strong Trustee-level numbers, ask your admissions counselor directly whether they’re being considered for Heritage.

Honors students with a research project already underway and a faculty mentor behind it. Harding named two recipients in 2026, so it rewards students who start research early.

Honors money at Harding is mostly research support for current students. The tuition dollars come through Trustee, National Merit and the academic chart covered above.

Why Honors Still Matters for Families
  • Trustee requires it. Keeping the Trustee Scholarship means staying active in Honors, so it’s not optional for winners.
  • Research and fellowships. Honors students get help applying for grants and national fellowships like Rhodes, Fulbright and Truman.
  • Honors Symposium. A two-week summer program on campus for rising seniors. It’s a low-pressure way to test-drive Harding before applying.

Honors College FAQs (Harding University)

Is there a separate Honors application for freshmen?
Not in the usual sense. Freshmen get in automatically through Trustee, Heritage, National Merit, or a perfect score. Everyone else applies once they post a 3.25 GPA in college.

Does joining Honors later come with a scholarship?
No tuition scholarship. Students who join after their first semester get the classes, advising and research opportunities, plus a shot at awards like the Trey Carlock Rising Scholar research grant.

Is the “Honors Scholarship” on the merit chart the same as the Honors College?
No. The $9,000 Honors Scholarship is just a tier on the academic chart. It doesn’t put your student in the Honors College.

Can nursing and other busy majors do Honors?
Yes. Honors students can earn credit through “honors contracts” in regular upper-level courses, and Harding’s nursing college runs its own Honors track.

Can a student lose Honors status?
Graduating with Honors recognition requires a minimum GPA (3.25 for Honors College Graduate) plus honors credit hours. For Trustee Scholars, dropping out of Honors also puts the scholarship at risk.

⭐ College Specialty

Harding is a faith-first university, and it shows in the majors that draw the most students: helping professions like nursing, teaching and ministry, plus a big business school. It’s also one of the strongest launch pads in Arkansas for students headed into health careers, because Harding runs its own graduate programs in pharmacy, physician assistant, physical therapy and speech-language pathology on the same campus.

Nationally Known Program:
Carr College of Nursing. Harding has trained nurses since 1975, and RNCareers.org named it the best nursing school in Arkansas in 2024. Students can take the traditional four-year BSN in Searcy, and there’s an accelerated BSN in Rogers for students who already have a degree.
  • Business: The Paul R. Carter College of Business Administration is one of the largest programs on campus, with endowed scholarships for accounting and finance juniors and seniors.
  • Education: The Cannon-Clary College of Education prepares teachers across a long list of licensure areas. Arkansas students headed into high-need fields can add state teacher aid later.
  • Bible and Ministry: A natural fit for a Churches of Christ university, with majors in ministry, family ministry, missions and preaching, plus their own scholarship committee.
  • Pre-health and sciences: Strong pathways into Harding’s own pharmacy, PA, physical therapy and speech-language pathology programs, backed by several premed and health science scholarships for juniors and seniors.
  • Engineering: A smaller department with hands-on design work and three dedicated freshman scholarships.
  • Study abroad: Harding runs its own semester programs in Greece, Florence, Europe, Australasia, Latin America and Zambia, so students can study overseas with Harding faculty and Harding credit.

✅ Wrapping It Up

Harding is a place where your family’s story can matter as much as your student’s test score. The academic chart is generous, but it rewards the full combination of GPA and ACT, so run your real numbers before you trust a headline minimum, and don’t be shy about a summer retest. Strong students should take a real swing at Trustee. Arkansas families should treat SAMS and the July 1 deadline like part of the Harding application, because state aid stacks on top of everything and opens the door to the Harding Guarantee. And if your family has ties to ministry, missions, a Christian school, or a Church of Christ congregation, go through the hidden gems one by one. That’s often where Harding goes from “maybe” to affordable.

I started CollegeReadyParent while working through college costs for my own kid, and quickly figured out that the number a school advertises and the number a family actually pays are two very different things. Since then I’ve gone school by school pulling apart award letters, scholarship pages, and cost sheets to find what families are supposed to just know. This site is the version of that research I wish someone had handed me. More about Leo →
