Do we have to live on campus?

Mississippi Christian University is a small private university in Clinton, about fifteen minutes west of downtown Jackson, and it is the oldest institution of higher learning in the state. Founded in 1826, it turned 200 in the same year it changed its name. It is affiliated with the Mississippi Baptist Convention and is the second oldest Baptist university in the country.
What that history buys a family today is scale that punches above the enrollment. Roughly 2,900 undergraduates, but with more than 80 undergraduate majors, a law school, doctoral programs, and a physician assistant program on the same campus. If your student is aiming at a health profession, at teaching, or at law, MC has the pipeline built already.
Nationally Known Program:
Nursing and the health sciences are MC’s flagship. Registered Nursing is far and away the most popular major on campus, graduating roughly 90 students a year, and the School of Nursing has been building clinical partnerships with area hospitals for more than fifty years. Most nursing graduates line up employment before they walk. Sitting alongside it are Kinesiology and Exercise Science and Biomedical Sciences, the second and third most popular majors, which together make MC an unusually deep bench for pre-health students at this size.
- Pre-Health and the Cadaver Lab: MC runs a wet cadaver lab and gives prospective students tours of it during scholarship weekend. Hands-on anatomy access at the undergraduate level is rare at a school this small. MC also houses a physician assistant program, which is a real advantage if your student wants that path without transferring institutions.
- Business: The School of Business runs its own scholarship money through a campus interview day and offers accounting, finance, entrepreneurship, and general business administration. Outside reviewers have consistently singled out business as one of MC’s strongest undergraduate offerings.
- Education: The School of Education and Human Sciences has been nationally accredited since the middle of the last century and turns out a large share of Mississippi’s teachers. It also houses the nation’s only Doctor of Professional Counseling. This is the only program at MC with a dedicated $25,000 scholarship competition attached to it, which tells you where the university is investing.
- Law and the 3+3 Pathway: MC Law sits under the same university, and undergraduates can enter an English 3+3 accelerated track that shaves a year off the road to a law degree. If your student already knows law is the destination, that is a year of tuition saved.
- Psychology and Criminal Justice: Both are heavily enrolled, and MC pairs them with Administration of Justice, Homeland Security, Paralegal Studies, and Social Work, which is a practical cluster for students headed toward public service or graduate counseling work.
- Quietly Unusual for the Size: MC offers a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, a full music and fine arts slate with audition scholarships, and Christian Studies as an elevated interdisciplinary unit following the university’s 2026 academic reorganization.
One note on athletics, since it affects some families’ plans. MC discontinued football after the 2024 season and now competes in 17 sports at the NCAA Division II level in the Gulf South Conference. And for a Mississippi community college student headed into teaching, eight $25,000 education grants against a tiny applicant pool may be the best value in the state.
Two honest cautions before you build a budget. The Speed Scholarship is described one way in older recruiting material and another way on the financial aid page today, so get an award letter in hand rather than a promise. And this is a residential campus. Most students are required to live on campus, off-campus students see their stackables cut in half, and Mississippi residents lose Speed entirely if they move off. Plan on the full room and board.
One last thing, and it is worth saying plainly. This school spent 200 years as Mississippi College and only became Mississippi Christian University in June of 2026. Same campus in Clinton, same accreditation, same MC. But if a search comes up empty, or a database looks out of date, or a relative swears they went somewhere with a different name, that is why.
