🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Mississippi University for Women (Read This First)
- The Presidential Award is a side door into the Honors College. The Honors College advertises a 24 ACT or 1090 SAT bar for applicants. But The W’s own honors scholarship page says students who receive the Presidential Award are automatically qualified to enroll and only need to email honors@muw.edu to accept. Two doors, and most families never see the easier one.
- Getting in is easy. Getting paid is not automatic. The W is not test-optional. A transcript alone will not do it. Your student’s ACT or SAT score is what sorts them into an award tier, so skipping the test means skipping the merit grid entirely.
- Out-of-state pricing just changed for the first time in years. Through 2025-26 The W charged everyone the same rate. Starting Fall 2026 there is a non-resident fee of $41.67 per credit hour, capped at $500 per semester, or $1,000 a year. Still one of the smallest out-of-state premiums in the country, but no longer zero. Older cost comparisons you find online are now low.
- The two biggest awards replace your other money, they do not add to it. The W states plainly that receiving the Centennial or the Honors Award “replaces any prior award offers.” Power of Six is the same story. Winning big can mean losing what you already had.
- There is a hard ceiling on institutional aid. Total W scholarships cannot exceed tuition, room, board, and a book stipend. Stack past that line and your awards get reduced.
- There are two separate grids with two separate deadlines. Freshmen work off one grid with a May 1 priority date. Transfers work off a completely different grid with a July 1 priority date and a September 14 transcript cutoff.

FAQ — Cost of Attendance at Mississippi University for Women
Why is out-of-state barely more expensive than in-state at The W?
Because for years it was not more expensive at all. The W charged residents and non-residents identical rates, which made it one of the cheapest options in the country for out-of-state families. That changed for 2026-2027. Non-resident undergraduates now pay $41.67 per credit hour, capped at $500 a semester, so the total gap is $1,000 a year. Compare that to most public universities, where out-of-state students pay double or triple, and it is still remarkable.
Is there a waiver to get out of the new non-resident fee?
No. The W does not publish a broad undergraduate tuition waiver or a regional reciprocity path. There is one narrow exception worth knowing: the Phi Theta Kappa transfer scholarship states that out-of-state fees are covered if applicable. Beyond that, plan on paying the $1,000. Given the size of the fee, it is not worth building a strategy around.
Does The W participate in the Academic Common Market?

Honestly, at a $1,000 annual out-of-state premium, the Academic Common Market would save you far less than it does at a school charging a $15,000 premium. Why are books and transportation not in the total above?
Because The W does not bill you for them. The university invoices tuition, mandatory fees, housing, and meal plans. Books, travel, and personal spending vary too much student to student to average meaningfully. One thing to price out: The W offers a textbook rental program called WBooks+ at a flat $23 per credit hour, which works out to roughly $690 a year for a full-time student.
Is the average net price really around $12,487?
That is the federal figure, meaning what the average student actually paid after grants and scholarships. It lags the current year by a cycle or two, so treat it as a reference point rather than a quote. Because The W’s merit grid is published and predictable, you can do better than an average here. Do the mandatory fees change anything?
They are already baked into the tuition figure. Full-time students pay a $50 per semester capital improvement fee and a $150 per semester technology fee, both included in the $4,523.50 semester rate. Watch out for the extras: a $50 payment plan enrollment fee, a $150 late payment fee, and a $10 fee every time your student adds or drops a course.
Will tuition go up each year?
Typically yes, modestly. The W went from $4,373.50 a semester in 2025-2026 to $4,523.50 in 2026-2027, roughly a 3.4 percent bump. Your scholarship amount, however, stays fixed at the dollar figure you were awarded. That means the gap widens a little each year, so budget for it.

Are these awards actually guaranteed?
Effectively yes, if you are on time. The W publishes the grid and applies it. The one caveat is money: students admitted after the priority date are considered only if funds remain. That is not a hypothetical warning, it is stated on both the freshman and transfer pages. Apply early.
My student’s admit is basically certain. Do they still need to take the ACT?
Yes, and this is the single most expensive mistake families make here. The W is not test-optional. Admission and money are two different processes. A score of 18 versus 20 is the difference between the bottom of the grid and the top of it, which at The W is $2,000 a year versus $5,500 a year. Over four years that is $14,000.
What is a “CPC GPA” and why is it different from my student’s regular GPA?
CPC stands for college preparatory curriculum. Mississippi’s public universities calculate merit off a defined set of core academic courses rather than a student’s full transcript. Electives, PE, and similar courses do not count toward it. Your student’s CPC GPA can land above or below the GPA printed on their report card, so ask the school counselor to run it before you predict an award tier.
Can these stack with other W scholarships?
Generally yes, and that is a real advantage over schools that force you to pick one. The grid award is designed to be a base you build on with departmental, alumni, and program awards. The limits are firm though: your total package cannot exceed cost of attendance, and institutional scholarships together cannot exceed tuition plus room, board, and a book stipend.
Are they renewable?
Yes. Recipients need at least 12 hours a semester at The W and a 2.5 cumulative W GPA each year, plus Satisfactory Academic Progress. Freshmen entering with no prior credit get eight semesters of eligibility. Transfers get six semesters if they arrive with 24 to 47 hours, four semesters at 48 hours or more.
My student was valedictorian. Is there anything extra?
Yes, though it is modest. The W adds $500 for valedictorians and $400 for salutatorians. It is a one-time, one-year award that layers on top of the grid award rather than replacing it.
We are an international family and cannot file the FAFSA. Are we shut out?
No. The W runs a separate International Freshman Merit Scholarship at $3,000 a year for students who are not FAFSA-eligible. The academic bar mirrors the Franklin Award, no separate application is required, and every admitted international freshman is evaluated automatically.

What exactly does the Centennial Scholarship cover?
It is The W’s most prestigious award and the closest thing to a full ride on campus: full tuition, room, board, and a book stipend, plus a one-time $5,000 award toward the required study abroad experience. Recipients must join the Ina E. Gordy Honors College, live in the Honors Residence Hall, and study abroad the summer after sophomore year. Eligibility starts at a 24 ACT and a 3.4 GPA.
Is the Honors Award really “full tuition”?
This one needs a careful answer, because The W’s own pages disagree. The admissions scholarship page describes the Honors Award as covering “the full cost of tuition.” The Honors College page describes it as $8,250 per year plus $2,500 toward study abroad. Tuition for 2026-2027 is $9,047, so those two descriptions differ by roughly $800 a year. Before you build a budget around it, ask admissions to confirm the dollar figure in writing. Either way it carries the same requirements as the Centennial: Gordy Honors College, Honors Residence Hall, and study abroad after sophomore year.
How many of these awards are actually given out?
The W publishes counts for two of them. The W Leadership Scholarship goes to ten students a year, and the First Generation Ambassador Scholarship goes to five. The Centennial and Honors Awards do not have published counts, but treat them as genuinely selective. They are a stretch goal, not a plan.
What does the W Leadership Program require after you win?
More than most scholarships. Recipients take four one-credit leadership development courses, one per year, moving from self-discovery to teamwork to a service-learning project to a capstone leadership portfolio. What should my student prepare?

What is the Women’s College, and do we have to be female to join?
No. Every W student is eligible regardless of gender. It is a curriculum built around women’s and gender issues that layers onto any major, and students complete one of two pathways named for the university’s 1884 founding as the first public college for women in the United States. Both the 1884 Scholar and 1884 Fellow pathways carry scholarships, awarded in two rounds with a March 1 first deadline and an April 15 second deadline.
Several awards list no deadline. When should we check?
Anchor on the MUWAA date of June 1 for alumni association awards and the Culinary Arts awards, August 1 for the G. Halbert Uplift Scholarship, and April 1 for Neill James. For everything departmental, contact the chair of the academic department directly. The W says outright that departmental scholarships have their own application, deadline, and selection process, which means there is no central calendar to consult.
Are any of these open to students who are already enrolled?
Yes, quite a few. The Southern Grace Scholarship is actually restricted to juniors and seniors in Culinary Arts. Biology, physical sciences, languages, and psychology awards are largely aimed at current majors. Tell your student to keep checking the departmental page every spring rather than treating scholarships as a one-time freshman-year task.

The Ina E. Gordy Honors College at The W
The Ina E. Gordy Honors College is small, residential, and genuinely academic rather than decorative. Students take honors coursework together, live together in Grossnickle Hall if they are in the residential track, travel abroad as a cohort after sophomore year, and finish with original research presented under a faculty mentor. Completing the honors curriculum is the only way to graduate from The W with the “with honors” designation on a degree.
🔑 The Thing Almost Nobody Notices
The Honors College admissions page lists a 24 ACT or 1090 SAT minimum to apply, along with a letter requesting admission, a résumé, and a recommendation letter. That is the door most families see, and plenty of students look at it and decide they are not honors material.
But The W’s own honors scholarship page says something different. Four-year and transfer students who receive the Presidential Award are automatically qualified to enroll in the Honors College. They do not apply. They email honors@muw.edu and accept.
Parent translation: if your student lands the top tier of the automatic grid, honors is already theirs. Do not let them talk themselves out of it because of a test score cutoff that does not apply to them. Send the email.

Is honors admission automatic?
It depends which door you came through. Presidential Award recipients are automatically qualified and just need to notify the Honors College. Everyone else applies, and freshmen need at least a 24 ACT or 1090 SAT to be considered.
What does the application involve?
A letter requesting admission, a résumé listing contact information, high school GPA, test scores, honors, and activities, and a letter of recommendation from someone at the high school who can speak to academic ability. Applicants also indicate whether they want the Residential Honors Program.

About 2,400 students total, an 11 to 1 student-faculty ratio, and a campus of 114 acres in historic downtown Columbus where 23 of the buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. What The W is really known for is turning out graduates efficiently. It leads the entire Mississippi public university system in degree completion, awarding 33.3 undergraduate degrees per 100 full-time equivalent students against a system average of 23.9. U.S. News ranks it 3rd in Best Value among public Southern regional universities, and Washington Monthly puts it 16th for Best Bang for the Buck in the South.
Nationally Known Program:
The Bill & Jo-Ann Vandergriff College of Nursing & Health Sciences — Nursing is not just a strong program at The W, it is the center of gravity. Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees made up over half of all bachelor’s degrees the university awarded in its most recent year. The associate program is accredited by ACEN and the BSN, MSN, and DNP programs by CCNE, both at the maximum term allowed. Niche places it in the top 4 percent of U.S. nursing schools, and RegisteredNursing.org ranked it the top RN program in Mississippi. The W also runs a full BSN campus in Tupelo, which is where the majority of its nursing students actually are.

This is a small, focused, hard-to-find undergraduate pathway into a licensed profession, and The W has been running it for decades.
- Culinary Arts Institute: The W’s culinary program is one of a kind among Mississippi’s public universities and has grown steadily while other departments shrank.
