Test-optional for admission is not test-optional for merit. The main Freshmen Merit award needs a 3.0 GPA and at least a 21 ACT or 1060 SAT. Without scores, your student only qualifies for the smaller GPA-only award.
No superscore. WSU uses your best single test date. Improved scores still count if they arrive by May 1 of senior year.
The biggest money has a November deadline. DSI, WISE, and AGH (awards up to $80,000) require the WSU admission application by Nov 1 and competition materials by Nov 8. That sneaks up on families still touring colleges.

Why does WSU’s own budget show higher tuition than the table above?
The table uses the tuition and mandatory fees every student pays for 30 credit hours. WSU’s official 2026–27 budget adds average course and program fees, so it lists $11,580 for Kansans and $22,680 for non-residents. With books, transportation, and personal costs included, WSU estimates the full year on campus at about $30,620 in-state and $41,720 out-of-state.
How much does living on campus cost?
WSU budgets $13,840 a year for on-campus food and housing. Living at home drops that to about $6,770, which is a big reason so many Wichita-area families keep WSU on the list.
Does Shocker City really mean in-state tuition?
Yes, for students from the specific counties WSU lists, the tuition rate is identical to a Kansas resident’s. It is set by county, not by city, so check your county on WSU’s tuition page before assuming you qualify.
What does Shocker Select or MSEP actually cost per year?
For 2026–27, WSU lists tuition and fees of about $14,417 a year at the discounted rate, compared to $21,517 at the full non-resident rate. WSU’s full on-campus budget for these students comes to about $34,670.
Will the MSEP discount show up on my financial aid letter?
No. After admission you get an MSEP agreement form in the mail, and the discount shows up on your first semester bill, not your aid offer. Keep a GPA of 2.50 or higher and stay full-time to keep it.

Does Wichita State superscore?

Does my student need a 3.5 GPA AND a 27 ACT for DSI?
No. Your student needs to meet just one: a 3.5 unweighted GPA, a 27 ACT, a 1260 SAT, or top 10% of their class at the end of junior year. One heads-up: WSU’s Gore Scholar page mentions a 3.5 GPA minimum for that specific award.
Can my student compete in more than one?
Yes. WSU schedules WISE and AGH the day before DSI specifically so engineering and business students can do both.
When will we hear back?
DSI semifinalists hear by the week of December 4. The Smith Scholar is announced by December 18. Gore finalists interview January 21 and winners are announced January 29. James, Parkinson, and Passage 2 Success winners hear in February through April.
Is the Harry Gore Scholarship $64,000 or $80,000?

Does Shocker Promise stack with merit scholarships?
Not the way most families hope. All gift aid gets applied to tuition and fees first, and smaller WSU freshman scholarships are replaced by the Promise. Private WSU Foundation scholarships can still combine up to the cost of tuition and fees.
What does it take to keep the Shocker Promise?

What is the Rudd Scholarship?

Guaranteed Applied Learning: every WSU degree has a built-in internship, co-op, research, or hands-on experience. In 2025 WSU reported a record $39.2 million earned by students in paid internships.
Engineering beyond aerospace: mechanical engineering is among the most popular paths, and the College of Engineering awards nearly $1 million a year in its own scholarships.
W. Frank Barton School of Business: business administration draws large numbers of students, and the AGH competition offers business majors awards up to $50,000, including two for entrepreneurship majors.

Here is the big picture on Wichita State. Admission is easy and the price is already low, so the whole game is collecting money. For most families that starts with the merit chart: get your student admitted by December 1 with a real test score on file, because a 21 ACT is the line between the main Merit award and the smaller GPA-only one.
If your student is a strong applicant, November is the month that matters. DSI, WISE, and AGH hand out awards from $30,500 to $80,000, and a lot of families never hear about them until the deadline has passed. For lower-income Kansas families, the Shocker Promise and the Rudd Scholarship can take college costs close to zero. And if you live in a nearby state, check the tuition discounts, but remember that they shrink merit.
Add in a guaranteed internship or hands-on experience in every major and the Air Capital job market right outside the door, and WSU is a school where a family can come out with a real degree, real work experience, and very little debt.
