Wichita State is not a school that makes families sweat the admission decision. WSU publishes an assured admission standard: a cumulative 2.25 GPA on a 4.00 scale, or an ACT composite of 21, or a combined SAT of 1060. Meet any one of those and you are in. Students who fall short are still reviewed individually, and WSU accepts the Common App.
That means the real work at Wichita State is not getting admitted. It is getting the money right, and WSU has more moving parts than most schools this accessible. Scholarship amounts change based on your residency, tuition discounts can quietly shrink your merit award, and there is a hard ceiling on how much institutional aid one student can hold. Those rules are all written down. They are just scattered across a dozen pages.

📌 Wichita State University at a Glance
- The tuition discount can shrink your scholarship. This is the big one. If your student qualifies for Shocker City, Shocker Select, MSEP, or Legacy tuition, WSU reduces the merit award to the Kansas resident amount. The merit ceiling drops from $6,000/yr to $4,000/yr. You still come out ahead overall, but the two do not simply add together the way most families assume.
- There is a hard cap on institutional aid. WSU limits all combined WSU scholarships to $50,000 over four years for students paying resident rates and $75,000 for students paying non-resident rates. Go over it and the merit award gets reduced or pulled.
- Your merit award may “disappear” and that is usually fine. WSU often replaces the automatic merit award with a named donor scholarship later in the cycle. The dollars typically hold. The line item on the dashboard changes. Do not panic when the merit line goes to zero.
- No superscore. Wichita State does not superscore the ACT or SAT. One test date has to carry the whole load.
- Self-reported scores get checked. Merit offers are built off what your student reports during admission. If the official scores or final transcript come in lower, WSU can revise or withdraw the award.
- November 1 is the real deadline, not December 1. December 1 is the priority date for automatic merit. But if your student wants a shot at the big competitive money, the admission application has to be complete by November 1 and the competition materials by November 8. Miss those and the $80,000 and $64,000 awards are off the table for the year.
- WSU lists conflicting FAFSA dates on its own site. The official deadlines page says December 1. Other pages say March 1 or April 1. File by December 1 to be safe. If you are chasing Shocker Promise, April 1 is a hard wall with no flexibility.

📌 Regional Tuition & Waiver Options
Wichita State runs four separate discount paths, and they are unusually generous. Shocker City Partnership gives students from designated metro areas in Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas the full in-state rate, worth about $10,625 a year. Shocker Select gives other students from those same eight states 33% off non-resident tuition, worth about $6,750 a year. The Midwest Student Exchange Program (MSEP) offers the same 33% to residents of Indiana, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, and Wisconsin who meet major, GPA, and test requirements. And Legacy Tuition gives the in-state rate to any non-resident whose parent, step-parent, guardian, grandparent, or step-grandparent earned a WSU degree.
Read this part twice: if your student receives any of these discounts, WSU reduces the merit scholarship to the Kansas resident amount. The discount and the scholarship do not fully stack.
FAQ — Cost of Attendance at Wichita State University
If I take the Shocker City discount, do I lose my scholarship?
Not entirely, but it gets smaller. WSU reduces the merit or university academic award to the Kansas resident amount, which caps the merit award at $4,000 a year instead of $6,000. The discount is still worth far more than the difference. A family from Kansas City going from the non-resident rate to the in-state rate saves about $10,625 a year, which dwarfs the $2,000 scholarship reduction. Just do not build your budget assuming both hit at full value.
How do I know if my town counts for Shocker City?
Shocker City is tied to specific metro counties, not whole states. Two families in the same state can get different answers. Check WSU’s tuition discount page and confirm your county directly with admissions before you assume anything. If your county is not on the Shocker City list but your state is one of the eight, you likely land on Shocker Select instead at 33% off.
Why is the out-of-state total so much higher?
Non-resident tuition runs about $645 per credit hour compared to about $272 for Kansas residents. That gap is the state subsidy Kansas taxpayers cover for their own students. The discount programs above exist specifically to close it, which is why they matter so much more at WSU than at a typical public university.
Are there extra fees my student’s major will trigger?
Yes, and they add up. WSU charges per-credit-hour college fees on top of tuition: about $97 for engineering, $76 for business, $40 for fine arts, $45 for innovation and design, and $53.43 for nursing. Dental hygiene adds $500 a semester and medical lab sciences adds $250 a semester. Honors students pay $50 a semester. Budget for these separately, because they are not in the headline tuition number.
Does the housing figure cover everything?
The number here reflects a double-occupancy room with unlimited meal access, which is what most first-year students choose. Shocker Hall and The Suites both run about $12,100 a year. The Flats at WSU run slightly higher at about $12,170. Books add roughly $1,200 a year and parking is about $150 if your student brings a car.
Is the average net price what my family will actually pay?
It is a useful anchor, not a prediction. That figure is the federal average across all aided students after grants and scholarships. Kansas families under $60,000 in income may pay close to nothing for tuition through Shocker Promise. A high-stats out-of-state student with no tuition discount and no merit could pay well above it. Do costs go up each year while my scholarship stays flat?
Usually, yes. The Kansas Board of Regents approves new rates each year, typically in early July. Merit scholarship amounts are locked at the level offered when your student was admitted and renew for up to eight semesters. So the gap between cost and award tends to widen a little each year. Plan for that.

Parent rule of thumb: treat November 1 as your family’s real deadline. Everything downstream at WSU depends on the admission file being complete by then.
Automatic Merit Scholarships — Wichita State University
The higher end of each range is reserved for students paying full non-resident tuition. Kansas residents, and any out-of-state student receiving a tuition discount, are awarded off the lower band. In practice that means Freshmen Merit runs $1,000 to $4,000 a year for residents and discount recipients, and $1,500 to $6,000 a year for full-pay non-residents. The University Academic Scholarship runs $1,000 to $2,000 and $1,500 to $3,000 on the same split.
Also note: the WSU National Merit Scholarship figure is a four-year total, not an annual amount. The annual value varies.
Note: Students receive the single highest-value award they qualify for between the Freshmen Merit and University Academic categories. Those two do not stack with each other. They can stack with the Cohen Honors College Merit Scholarship if your student is admitted to Honors.
Automatic Merit — FAQs (Wichita State)
Do we have to apply for these?
No. Getting admitted is the application. If your student qualifies, WSU sends the scholarship offer, usually within about two weeks of admission. The only thing you control is timing, which is why the December 1 priority date matters.
What if my student never took the ACT or SAT?
They can still get money. The University Academic Scholarship is awarded on unweighted high school GPA alone, with no test score required. It tops out lower than the Merit Scholarship, so students who can post a decent score should submit it. But a testless student is not shut out at WSU, which is not true everywhere.
Does Wichita State superscore?
No. WSU uses a single test sitting. If your student is close to a scholarship threshold, one more clean test date is usually worth more than another round of practice on a superscore strategy that WSU will not honor.
Can we improve the offer after it arrives?
Yes, and families overlook this. WSU reconsiders merit awards when updated official ACT or SAT scores and official GPAs arrive. Those updates must be on file by May 1. A spring test date that bumps a composite by two points can move your student a full tier.
What does it take to keep the money?
Enroll full time each fall and spring, earn at least 24 WSU credit hours per year, and hold a 3.00 cumulative GPA. Note the word “earn.” Dropping a class after the deadline does not count toward that 24. First-year awards get checked after the first semester, so there is no free freshman fall.
Why did my student’s merit scholarship vanish from the dashboard?
Almost always because WSU replaced it with a named donor scholarship from the Foundation. The total dollars usually stay the same or improve. Your student gets a separate notification and has to accept it. Read the award letter before you call the office in a panic.
What about National Merit Finalists?
WSU offers an estimated $50,000 over four years. Your student must be fully admitted in a degree-bound program by March 1 and must designate WSU as first choice with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation by May 1. It replaces the Freshmen Merit award, but it can combine with academic college scholarships up to the cost of attendance. Renewal is demanding: a 3.50 GPA, 15 credit hours every semester, participation in two organizations, and pre-registration for classes by July 1 and December 1 each year.
Is there anything for transfer students?
Yes. The Transfer Merit Scholarship runs $2,000 to $3,000 a year for up to two years with a 3.25 transfer GPA, renewing at a 3.00. Named Phi Theta Kappa All-Kansas Academic Team members can add a separate $1,000 one-year award on top of it.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)
The grid below lists a 3.5 GPA, a 27 ACT, and a 1260 SAT. Those are alternative pathways, not a combined requirement. To be eligible for DSI, your student needs any one of the following:
- Minimum unweighted 3.5 GPA, or
- Minimum ACT composite of 27, or
- Minimum SAT composite of 1260, or
- Rank in the top 10 percent of the class at the end of junior year
A student with a 3.6 GPA and a 24 ACT qualifies. So does a student with a 3.2 GPA who ranks in the top 10 percent. Do not let a single number talk your family out of applying.

WSU runs several major-specific competitions on the same November 8 materials deadline. These are not listed in the grid below, so families skip them constantly:
- WISE (Wallace Invitational for Scholarships in Engineering): awards 10 Wallace scholarships to engineering majors.
- AGH (Allen, Gibbs and Houlik): awards the Clay Barton, Ross Tidemann, Harry Najim, and Fran Jabara scholarships to business majors.
- Lenora McGregor Scholarship: awarded through the Cohen Honors College to an honors student of any major. Requires the Honors application by January 10.
- College of Fine Arts: awards flow from audition and portfolio review, with most funding decided by March 15.

What are the actual DSI deadlines?
Three dates, all of them firm. Wichita State admission application materials by November 1. Scholarship competition materials by 11:59 p.m. on November 8. Competition day on campus November 21. Your student has to be physically present on competition day. There is no virtual option.
How much money is actually on the table?
One $80,000 Richard D. Smith Scholarship, three $64,000 Harry Gore Memorial Scholarships, one $40,000 Mike & Mary James Scholarship, one Mark & Stacy Parkinson Scholarship up to $34,000, at least ten Passage 2 Success Scholarships from $8,000 to $20,000, and multiple $4,000 DSI Semifinalist awards. All figures are four-year totals except the Semifinalist award, which is one time.
Do some DSI awards have extra strings?
Yes, and this is not obvious from the grid. The Mike & Mary James Scholarship requires a declared major in the College of Fine Arts or the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. The Mark & Stacy Parkinson Scholarship requires graduating from a Kansas high school and is geared toward first-generation students. Passage 2 Success requires meeting the April 1 FAFSA date and participating in the Passage 2 Success program on campus.
What are the odds, really?
Better than the headline suggests. Roughly 528 students competed for 12 finalist slots in the most recent cycle, and those finalists averaged a 27 ACT and a 3.91 GPA. But the Gore and Smith awards are only part of it. Semifinalist awards go to a much wider group, and Passage 2 Success alone has at least ten recipients. Showing up on a Saturday for a $4,000 award is a good hourly rate.
What does WSU actually evaluate?
An application with essays, plus an on-campus leadership exercise scored by observers in groups of about ten to twelve students. Finalists return in January for interviews. When do we hear back?
Staggered. Richard D. Smith and DSI Semifinalist decisions come in December. Harry Gore Memorial in January. Mike & Mary James and Mark & Stacy Parkinson in February. Passage 2 Success in April. Plan your family’s spring decision timeline around that April date if Passage 2 Success is your target.
Is Wichita State a Stamps Scholarship partner?

The Dorothy and Bill Cohen Honors College
Here is the part that surprises families: the Cohen Honors College has no minimum GPA and no minimum test score. None. Admission is a holistic read of an essay and a resume, and WSU says explicitly that greater emphasis goes on those two pieces than on scores.
For a student with an uneven transcript, a late bloom, or a story that does not fit neatly on a score report, that is a genuine opening. It is also why the Honors application is worth the effort even for families who assume honors programs are not for their kid.
- Application Opens: July 1, separate from the WSU admission application (your student needs a WSU ID first)
- What They Ask For: a 500 to 1,000 word essay on the college’s four pillars, plus a polished resume that can include volunteer work, family responsibilities, athletics, music, and paid work
- Decisions: reviewed monthly November through April. Everyone who applies by November 1 hears back by the end of December
- Staying In: a 3.25 cumulative GPA, at least 3 honors credits a year, and 12 credit hours each semester
- Honors Fee: $50 per semester
The Office of Financial Aid page states that priority consideration for the Honors College Merit Scholarship is November 1 for incoming freshmen and February 1 for transfers. The Cohen Honors College’s own page states February 1 for both. Those two pages do not agree.
Apply by November 1 and the conflict stops mattering. That date also lines up with the scholarship competition admission deadline, so your student is doing the work anyway.
Honors College Scholarships & Fellowships
Be honest about the numbers here. The Honors College Merit Scholarship is $500 a year for two years, so $1,000 total. Nobody is choosing Wichita State for that. What makes Honors worth it is that it stacks cleanly with the Freshmen or Transfer Merit Scholarship, it opens the door to the McGregor competition, and it puts your student in front of the faculty and advisors who nominate for larger awards later.
- Lenora McGregor Scholarship: a competitive award to an Honors student of any major. High school seniors must submit the Honors College application by January 10 to be considered. It uses the same essay prompt as the Honors application, so save that file.
- Cohen Enhancement Scholarship: up to $4,000 for roughly 25 current Honors students each year, funding study abroad, National Student Exchange, public sector internships, national conferences, undergraduate research, or service learning. This is upperclassman money and it is the reason the $500 entry award matters.
The Cohen Honors College awards nearly $450,000 a year in total to incoming and current students.
If your student is thinking about law school, save a copy of the Honors application essay. Wichita State’s Legal Education Accelerated Degree (LEAD) program uses it too. LEAD students move through together and finish with a WSU bachelor’s degree and a juris doctorate from the University of Kansas. One essay, two applications.
Cohen Honors College — FAQs
Is Honors admission automatic if my student has good stats?
No, and it also is not blocked by weak stats. There is no cutoff in either direction. WSU reads for a creative approach to problem solving, a drive to make an impact, open engagement with different perspectives, and a willingness to take on intellectual challenge. Those are essay qualities, not transcript qualities.
Should we submit test scores if they are mediocre?
Scores are considered but weighted below the essay and resume. Students with no scores at all are still encouraged to apply. If a score would hurt more than help, the application does not require it.
Can transfer students and current WSU students apply?
Yes. High school seniors, transfers, and current WSU students are all eligible. Applications are reviewed monthly November through April, plus a window one to two weeks before each semester starts. Students transferring from another honors program should talk to the Honors advisor about carrying credits over.
Does Honors add to the workload?
It changes the shape of the work more than the volume. WSU offers multiple curriculum paths to an honors distinction, so a student arriving with a stack of general education credits already done is not stuck. Ask the Honors advisor which path fits before enrolling.
What is the actual financial case for applying?
The entry scholarship is small, but Honors stacks with automatic merit, unlocks the McGregor competition, and puts your student in the pool for the Cohen Enhancement Scholarship in later years. It also costs nothing to apply beyond an essay you can reuse for LEAD and McGregor. The math works.

⭐ College Specialty
Wichita State is not the Kansas flagship. That title belongs to KU up in Lawrence. What WSU is instead is the state’s urban public research university, sitting in the middle of the city that calls itself the Air Capital of the World, and it has built something in aerospace that no other university in the country can match.
Aerospace Engineering and the National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) — According to National Science Foundation data, Wichita State ranks first among all U.S. universities in aerospace research and development expenditures and second in industry-funded engineering R&D. NIAR runs on roughly a $400 million annual budget with about 2,000 staff across two million square feet of lab space in six locations around Wichita. It works directly with the FAA, the Department of Defense, Boeing, Textron, and Spirit AeroSystems on composites, digital twin technology, crash dynamics, and advanced manufacturing.
Here is the part that matters to a parent: NIAR employs roughly 800 paid student interns at any given time. Undergraduates are not watching this work from a classroom. They are on the payroll doing it.
That same instinct shows up across the whole university. Every degree Wichita State offers has a guaranteed applied learning or research experience built into it. Not encouraged. Built in. For families who worry about a kid graduating with a diploma and no resume, that is a structural answer rather than a marketing line.
- Engineering (Aerospace and Mechanical): The College of Engineering feeds directly into Wichita’s aviation manufacturing cluster, and the region ranks third in the nation for concentration of engineers per capita. Students graduate with employers already knowing their names.
- W. Frank Barton School of Business: The largest scholarship pool of any WSU college, over $1 million a year to more than 250 students, plus its own AGH scholarship competition for incoming business majors.
- Nursing and the Health Professions: A deep cluster that goes well beyond nursing, including physician associate, dental hygiene, medical laboratory sciences, communication sciences and disorders, and physical therapy. Each carries its own scholarship deadline, several of which fall outside the normal April 1 window.
- Elementary Education: The College of Education awards nearly $600,000 a year across roughly 200 students, and Kansas teacher pipelines out of WSU are well established statewide.
- Forensic Science: A genuine niche program at WSU and a draw for students who would otherwise have to leave the region to find it.
- Innovation Campus: One of the fastest growing university research parks in the country, with global companies operating on university ground. It is the physical version of the applied learning promise.
One honest note on rankings: Wichita State is currently classified by the Carnegie Foundation as an R2 research institution, not R1. You will occasionally see R1 claimed in third-party writeups. The aerospace research numbers above are real and independently reported, but the Carnegie classification is R2.
