Starting Fall 2026, Southern charges every out-of-state student the reduced NEBHE rate, which is Connecticut tuition plus 50%. Your family does not have to live in New England to get it. In real dollars, out-of-state tuition and fees land about $3,500 a year above what Connecticut families pay, and housing and meals cost the same for everyone. - The merit deadline hides inside the admission application. There is no scholarship form, but your student has to submit the SCSU admission application by March 1, 2027 to be considered for the Southern Merit Award. Apply in April and that money is off the table.

What GPA or test score does my student need?
Southern does not publish cutoffs. It says awards are based on academic achievement and program criteria. Southern is test-optional, so scores are not required to apply.
How much is it worth?
Southern says merit awards typically range from $500 to $4,000 a year.
Does it renew every year?
Yes. Southern renews it automatically based on continued academic eligibility. It does not publish the exact renewal GPA, so ask the aid office to put the renewal terms in writing when the award arrives.
Can my student get the Southern Merit Award and the Presidential Merit Scholarship?
No. Southern says students cannot receive both. If your student gets into the Honors College, the $7,000 Presidential Merit Scholarship takes the place of the regular merit award.

What it does offer is a low starting price, one clear Honors award, and a lot of smaller money that shows up once your student is enrolled and has a semester or two of grades.

Is there a scholarship interview day or finalist weekend?
Not for general merit. The Southern Merit Award comes with the admission decision. The Honors College application does require an essay, and NOYCE applicants are interviewed by a selection committee.

Honors College at Southern Connecticut State University
The SCSU Honors College is where the biggest scholarship money at Southern lives. It is open to every major, and Southern says it requires no additional classes. Instead, your student’s regular requirements are tailored through small, interdisciplinary Honors courses. ⭐ College Specialty
Southern started life in 1893 as a school for training teachers, and you can still feel that today. It’s a hands-on public university in New Haven built around careers that serve people: teaching, nursing, social work, and health. Classes stay fairly small for a public school, with an 11-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio, and Southern reports that 87% of graduates are working or in grad school within six months.
