📊 Admissions Snapshot

  • Acceptance Rate: ~83%
  • Middle 50% ACT: N/A
  • Middle 50% SAT: 1100-1240
  • Average GPA: 3.3

A quick word on those test scores: Eastern is test-optional, and only about 18% of Fall 2025 first-years sent in SAT scores. The 1100-1240 SAT range above describes that small group, not the typical student Eastern admits. The average high school GPA for that class was 3.30.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Eastern Connecticut State University (Read This First)

  • Test-optional for admission, but not for Honors. Eastern’s only full-tuition award, the University Honors Program Scholarship, requires SAT or ACT scores. If your student is aiming for it, they need to test.
  • CAAP is a real guarantee for Connecticut kids. A 3.0 weighted or 2.75 unweighted GPA from a Connecticut high school locks in admission and a merit scholarship, with no essay and no fee. It does not get your student into Nursing or Honors. Those take their own applications.
  • Honors replaces merit instead of adding to it. And the full tuition-and-fee waiver only applies if your student lives on campus. Commuters get tuition only.
  • Three scholarship dates run the whole year: January 15 (Honors application), February 15 (Connecticut’s Roberta Willis Scholarship, submitted by the school counselor), and March 1 (FAFSA priority for Eastern’s foundation and department awards).
  • Out-of-state is better than you think. New York and New Jersey families pay in-state tuition. Everyone else, New England included, pays only about $3,500 a year more than Connecticut residents.

FAQ

Is this college test-optional? Yes, for admission. Eastern Connecticut State University is test-optional for admission, but scholarships can work differently (see the next question).

Do you need test scores for scholarships at Eastern Connecticut State University? Regular merit scholarships do not need test scores and only count them if they help, but the Honors Program and its scholarship require an SAT or ACT.

What is the middle 50% ACT/SAT? ACT: N/A; SAT: 1100-1240.

Average net price? About $18,092/year after aid.

Does this school use waivers/reciprocity? Yes. It participates in NEBHE.

💰 Cost of Attendance at Eastern Connecticut State University: 2026–2027 Rates

Figures verified against official sources in September 2026.

📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest Eastern Connecticut State University has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.

Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly $600 to $1,500 more than the in-state total below. $700 to $1,700 more than the out-of-state total below.

In-State: billed cost per year
$30,400
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $14,008
Housing & meals (typical) $16,392
Total billed cost $30,400
Out-of-State: billed cost per year
$33,900
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $17,508
Housing & meals (typical) $16,392
Total billed cost $33,900

That is $3,500 more per year than Connecticut residents pay, before any waivers or scholarships.

Average federal net price: $18,092 per year. This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, for in-state students only, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.

Out-of-state families: this average does not include you. Run the college's own net price calculator for a number based on your situation.

📌 Regional Tuition & Waiver Options

Eastern has two ways out-of-state families save. New York and New Jersey residents pay Eastern's in-state tuition rate starting in Fall 2026, for new and continuing students. Everyone else, including students from the other New England states, pays one published nonresident rate that runs only about $3,500 a year above in-state ($17,508 vs. $14,008 in tuition and fees for 2026-27). Eastern still participates in the New England Regional Student Program, but its 2026-27 cost sheet groups New England students with other out-of-state students, so confirm your exact rate with Admissions before you budget. Separately, the competitive University Honors Program waives full tuition and fees for students who live on campus.
Which Price Tag Is Yours? (2026-27 Direct Costs)

Eastern prices by where you live and whether you live on campus. Here’s what actually gets billed for a full year:

Your Situation Billed Per Year
Connecticut resident, commuting from home$14,008
Connecticut resident, living on campus$30,400
New York or New Jersey resident, living on campus$30,400
All other states and international, living on campus$33,900

On-campus figures assume a traditional double room and the unlimited Silver meal plan. Eastern adds about $3,574 in indirect costs (books, travel, personal expenses) that you won’t see on the bill but should budget for.

FAQ: Cost of Attendance at Eastern Connecticut State University

Do New York and New Jersey students really pay in-state tuition at Eastern?
Yes. Starting in Fall 2026, New York and New Jersey residents are charged Eastern’s in-state tuition rate, and Eastern says it applies to both new and continuing students. For a student living on campus, that’s the same $30,400 in direct costs a Connecticut family pays.

Is there still a New England (NEBHE) tuition break at Eastern?
Eastern still participates in the New England Regional Student Program, but its 2026-27 cost sheet puts New England students in the same rate group as other out-of-state students. In plain terms, a student from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, or Maine pays the flat nonresident rate, which is already only about $3,500 above in-state. Ask Admissions to confirm your exact rate before you budget.

How much more does an out-of-state student pay?
About $3,500 a year. Tuition and fees are $17,508 for out-of-state students versus $14,008 in-state, and housing and meals cost the same for everyone. Eastern says its current out-of-state rate is about $10,000 below what it used to charge, which is why the gap is so small.

What does it cost to commute to Eastern?
A Connecticut commuter is billed $14,008 for tuition, fees, and the U-Pass bus fee. Once you add books, gas, and personal costs, Eastern estimates about $18,510 for the year.

Why is the average net price (about $18,092) higher than the commuter price?
The federal net price averages together every aided first-year, and most of them live on campus. It’s what families paid after grants and scholarships, not a sticker price. A commuter with good aid can come in well under it; an on-campus student with no aid will pay more.

Are there extra costs for nursing students?
Yes. Nursing students pay an extra $450 per semester on top of regular tuition and fees.

Does Eastern require the CSS Profile?
No. Eastern only uses the FAFSA. File it by the March 1 priority date, because that single form is also how your student gets matched to Eastern’s foundation and department scholarships.

📅 Eastern Scholarship Timeline (Simple Version)

  • Fall of senior year: Merit is decided when your student is admitted, and Eastern admits on a rolling basis. Earlier applicants get first crack at scholarship money.
  • November 2: The Honors Program application opens (it’s separate from the regular application).
  • January 15: Honors application due, including the essay and two teacher recommendation forms.
  • February 15: Connecticut’s Roberta Willis Scholarship. Your school counselor submits it, and the FAFSA has to be in too.
  • March 1: FAFSA priority date for need-based aid and Eastern’s foundation and department scholarships.

Parent rule of thumb: treat the earliest date on this list as your real deadline, even if your student is still deciding.

Automatic Merit Scholarships at Eastern Connecticut State University

Eastern has two automatic paths. Connecticut students who apply through CAAP with a 3.0 weighted or 2.75 unweighted GPA are guaranteed a merit scholarship. Everyone else, including out-of-state and transfer students, is automatically reviewed for merit when they apply. There’s no separate scholarship application, and test scores are optional for merit.

One award, not a pile. Colleges apply your student's single best automatic award. Automatic scholarships almost never stack with each other, though some stack with housing, departmental, or outside money. The stacking notes on each card tell you which.

Strategic Detail
If you're a Connecticut resident graduating from a Connecticut high school with either a 3.0 weighted or 2.75 unweighted GPA, applying through CAAP guarantees both admission and a merit scholarship, with no essay and no application fee. The scholarship is awarded once Eastern receives your official transcript. CAAP does not guarantee a seat in the Nursing (BSN) program or the University Honors Program; both have separate applications.

💡
Strategic Detail
You're automatically considered for a merit scholarship when you apply for admission, and no separate application is needed. Eastern doesn't publish a dollar chart; your amount appears in the admission letter. In Eastern's Common Data Set, first-year students without financial need who received institutional merit averaged about $7,175 (2024-25). Admission is rolling, so applying early gives you the best shot at scholarship, housing, and aid dollars.

High-achieving first-year and transfer admits, including international students.
Data last verified Sep 27, 2026.* GPA/test bands are estimates based on official selectivity and prior cohort profiles. "Who Actually Wins" insights are pulled from external peer-sourced data where students and parents have reported real-world award results. Because colleges can change funding thresholds and deadlines at any time, always verify these details with the institution before finalizing your application strategy.

Note: Eastern doesn’t publish a merit dollar chart. The amount shows up in your student’s admission letter. If your student later wins the University Honors Program Scholarship, it replaces the merit award rather than stacking on top of it.

Automatic Merit FAQs (Eastern Connecticut State University)

What is CAAP, and who qualifies?
CAAP is the Connecticut Automatic Admission Program. If your student is a Connecticut resident graduating from a Connecticut high school with a 3.0 weighted or 2.75 unweighted GPA, they enter their GPA in the Common App, get an automatic admission offer within about a week, and pick Eastern. The merit scholarship is awarded as soon as Eastern receives the official transcript.

Is CAAP free?
Yes. No essay and no application fee. That’s a big deal for a family applying to several schools at once.

Can out-of-state students get merit at Eastern?
Yes. CAAP is only for Connecticut students, but every first-year applicant, including New York, New Jersey, and other out-of-state students, is automatically considered for a merit scholarship.

How much is Eastern’s merit scholarship?
Eastern doesn’t publish amounts. In its federal Common Data Set, first-year students without financial need who got institutional merit averaged about $7,175 for the year (2024-25). Your student’s own number will be in the admission letter.

Do we need SAT or ACT scores for merit?
No. Eastern is test-optional, and students are fully considered for merit without scores. The one exception is the Honors Program Scholarship, which does require them.

Does CAAP get my student into Nursing or Honors?
No. CAAP guarantees admission to Eastern, not to specific programs. The direct-entry Nursing (BSN) program and the University Honors Program each need their own application.

Is the merit scholarship renewable?
Eastern awards merit at admission but doesn’t post a public renewal GPA. Read the terms in your student’s award letter and ask Financial Aid what GPA and credit load are required to keep it.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)

Eastern does not run a separate essay-and-interview scholarship competition for incoming students. Its one big competitive award is the University Honors Program Scholarship, a full tuition-and-fee waiver covered in the Honors section below. Most other money comes from automatic merit and from foundation awards Eastern matches through the FAFSA (see Hidden Gems).

✅ Can You Stack Scholarships at Eastern?

Aid Type Stacks with Merit? Eastern Parent Translation
Automatic Merit (CAAP or general) N/A This is the base award. Your student gets one merit scholarship, listed in the admission letter.
University Honors Program Scholarship Replaces If your student is admitted to Honors, the tuition waiver takes the place of the merit award. It’s almost always the bigger number.
ECSU Foundation and Department Awards Generally yes These are usually $500 or more and layer on top, within Eastern’s overall aid limits. The FAFSA is the application.
Roberta Willis Scholarship (Connecticut) Usually State money for Connecticut students with strong grades or scores and financial need. It follows your student to any eligible Connecticut college.
Federal and need-based grants Usually Pell and Eastern’s need-based grants fill the gap after merit. Filing the FAFSA by March 1 matters.
Connecticut families: don’t skip the Roberta Willis Scholarship.

It’s the closest thing Connecticut has to a state merit scholarship. Students in the top 20% of their junior-year class, or with a 1200+ SAT or 25+ ACT, who also have a Student Aid Index of 10,999 or less can receive up to $5,250 a year at a four-year school like Eastern. Your student doesn’t apply directly: the school counselor submits the application, and it and the FAFSA are due by February 15. Ask the counselor about it in the fall.

If your student wants a school with a long list of named competitive scholarships, finalist weekends, and interviews, Eastern isn’t that school. What it offers instead is a low sticker price, guaranteed merit for Connecticut students, and one very valuable Honors award.

This institution does not offer designated Competitive scholarships at this time.

❓ Flagship / Competitive Scholarship FAQs

Does Eastern offer a full-ride scholarship?
No. The top award is the University Honors Program Scholarship, which covers full tuition and fees for students living on campus. It does not cover housing or meals, which run about $16,392 a year.

What is Eastern’s most competitive scholarship?
The University Honors Program Scholarship. It takes a separate application with an essay and two teacher recommendations by January 15, and it requires SAT or ACT scores.

How does the Roberta Willis Scholarship work at Eastern?
It’s a Connecticut state award, not an Eastern award, so it goes wherever your student enrolls in the state. The school counselor submits the application, and both it and the FAFSA are due February 15. The need-merit version pays up to $5,250 a year at four-year schools.

Does Eastern give athletic scholarships?
No. Eastern competes in NCAA Division III, and Division III schools don’t award athletic scholarships. Athletes are eligible for the same merit, Honors, and foundation money as everyone else.

Is Eastern a National Merit, QuestBridge, or Stamps school?
No. Eastern doesn’t list a National Merit package and isn’t a QuestBridge or Stamps partner.

🧠 Parent Strategy: At Eastern, the FAFSA Is the Scholarship Application

Eastern has a long list of donor-funded scholarships through the ECSU Foundation, and there’s no separate application for any of them. Financial Aid and the academic departments match students to awards using the FAFSA.

  1. File the FAFSA by March 1. Late filers can miss the match.
  2. Declare an intended major early. Many awards are tied to a department.
  3. Check the hometown awards. Eastern has scholarships reserved for graduates of Windham High and Windham Tech, New London High, Norwich Free Academy, Bridgeport, and Hartford-area high schools, plus several for students from Windham, Tolland, and New London counties.
  4. If your student works to help pay for school, make sure Financial Aid knows. At least one award (Carlyle) is set aside for working students.

Parent translation: these awards are often $500 or more each and stack on top of merit. Skip the FAFSA and your student is invisible to all of them.

💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships

These awards aren’t automatic merit, but they’re easy to miss and they stack. Most are matched through the FAFSA; a few are limited to certain majors, towns, or high schools.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

Do we need to apply separately for ECSU Foundation scholarships?
No. There’s no separate application. File the FAFSA by March 1, and Eastern’s Financial Aid Office and academic departments match your student to the awards they fit.

How much are these scholarships worth?
Many list a minimum of $500 a year, and a few are larger or multi-year. The Kevin Crosbie award for Windham High and Windham Tech graduates, for example, is a four-year scholarship.

Are there scholarships for students from specific Connecticut towns?
Yes, and this is Eastern’s real hidden gem. There are awards reserved for New London High School seniors, Norwich Free Academy graduates, Bridgeport residents, Windham High and Windham Tech graduates, Hartford-area and Hartford public school graduates, and students from New London, Tolland, Windham, Hartford, and New Haven counties.

Can out-of-state students get foundation scholarships?
Some of them. Many of the hometown awards are for Connecticut students, but need-based, working-student, and major-based awards (like the department and nursing scholarships) are open to out-of-state students who file the FAFSA.

Are there scholarships for Nursing and tech majors?
Yes. The William Backus Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Association Scholarship supports nursing majors, and the Philip Morales ’99 Scholarship supports Connecticut students from underrepresented groups in Data Science, Computer Science, Math, and Business Information Systems.

Can current Eastern students still win these?
Yes, and many are designed for sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Keep filing the FAFSA by March 1 every year, because that’s how continuing students get matched too.

University Honors Program at Eastern Connecticut State University

Eastern’s University Honors Program is a small, selective community inside the university, with its own seminars, a cohort that moves through core courses together, and a required senior thesis. It also carries the biggest scholarship Eastern offers. Admission is not automatic: your student applies to Eastern first, then submits a separate Honors application.

  • Typical admit: Top 10% of the class, a 3.8+ GPA, and an SAT above 1200. Students below those marks can still apply and explain their circumstances.
  • Test scores: SAT or ACT scores are required for Honors, even though Eastern is test-optional otherwise.
  • Application opens: November 2
  • Deadline: January 15 (application, Honors essay, and two teacher recommendation forms)
  • Decisions: Usually by the end of March

Strategic Detail
Students living on campus receive a tuition and fee waiver ($14,008 at the in-state rate, which also covers New York and New Jersey residents, or $17,508 at the out-of-state rate). Students living at home receive a tuition-only waiver ($6,998 in-state or $10,498 out-of-state). The waiver covers tuition and fees, not housing or dining. To keep it, Honors Scholars must meet a rising cumulative GPA ladder (3.30 after first year, 3.40 sophomore, 3.45 junior, 3.50 senior), carry 12 graded credits each semester, take at least one Honors course per year, and complete an Honors thesis.

Living on campus: tuition and fees waived $14,008 $17,508

*Eastern’s Honors page labels these amounts as 2025-26 costs; the same tuition and fee figures appear on Eastern’s 2026-27 cost sheet. The waiver never covers housing or meals, and it replaces any merit scholarship your student was offered.

Keeping It Is a Rising Bar: The scholarship renews for up to four years (eight semesters), but the cumulative GPA needed goes up each year: 3.30 after the first year, 3.40 as a sophomore, 3.45 as a junior, and 3.50 as a senior. Honors Scholars also need 12 graded credits every semester, at least one Honors course per year, and must start the thesis sequence in the fall of junior year.

Honors Program FAQs (Eastern Connecticut State University)

Is Honors admission automatic at Eastern?
No. Your student must be admitted to Eastern first, then submit the separate Honors application by January 15. CAAP admission doesn’t include Honors.

Does Eastern’s Honors Program require SAT or ACT scores?
Yes. Scores are required to be considered for Honors, even though Eastern is test-optional for regular admission and merit.

Is the Honors scholarship a full ride?
No. It’s a full tuition-and-fee waiver for students living on campus, or a tuition-only waiver for commuters. Housing and meals are still on you.

Can out-of-state students get the Honors scholarship?
Yes. Out-of-state students living on campus get the full $17,508 in tuition and fees waived. New York and New Jersey students are waived at the in-state amount, since that’s what they’re charged.

Can my student keep merit and Honors together?
No. The Honors scholarship replaces the merit award from admission. Foundation scholarships and need-based grants can still be added on top.

What happens if my student’s GPA dips?
The renewal GPA rises each year, from 3.30 after freshman year to 3.50 by senior year. Falling below it puts the scholarship at risk, so it’s worth talking with the Honors Director early if grades slip.

⭐ College Specialty

Eastern calls itself Connecticut’s public liberal arts university, and it’s the state’s member of COPLAC, a national group of public liberal arts colleges. In practice, that means a campus of about 4,000 undergraduates, small classes where professors know your student’s name, and a price closer to a state school than a private college. Eastern started in 1889 as a teacher-training school in Willimantic, and it has grown into a place with strong pipelines in business, psychology, education, and the health sciences.

Newest Program to Watch:
Direct-Entry Nursing (BSN) admits about 60 students per cohort straight out of high school, with clinical training through a Hartford HealthCare partnership and a simulation lab at Windham Hospital. It needs its own application by March 1, a 3.0+ GPA, and a C or better in science and math courses, so don’t assume regular admission covers it.
  • Business Administration and Accounting: One of Eastern’s most popular paths, with majors that feed directly into Connecticut’s insurance, finance, and accounting employers.
  • Psychology: A popular major with room for faculty-student research, which helps if your student is eyeing grad school.
  • Education: Eastern’s founding purpose, and still a strength, especially early childhood and elementary education. It’s also where a large share of the foundation scholarships are aimed.
  • Biology and Health Sciences: A popular pre-health route, with department scholarships that reward research with faculty.
  • Communication: A hands-on major for students interested in media, journalism, and digital content.
  • Sport and Leisure Management: A less common major that has pulled in students from other New England states who couldn’t find it closer to home.
  • Data Science and Business Analytics: A growing option Eastern now features among its top programs, with scholarship support for Connecticut students in tech and math majors.

Eastern reports that 95% of its graduates are employed or in graduate school within six months of graduating.

✅ Wrapping It Up

Big picture? Eastern is a small public liberal arts school that keeps its price honest. A Connecticut commuter is billed about $14,000 a year, and even an out-of-state student living on campus pays less than a lot of families pay at their own state flagship. New York and New Jersey families get in-state tuition outright, and everyone else is only about $3,500 behind.

For Connecticut students with a 3.0 weighted GPA, CAAP is about as close to a sure thing as college money gets: guaranteed admission, guaranteed merit, no essay, no fee. For the strongest students, the Honors Program Scholarship can wipe out tuition and fees for four years, but only if they test, apply by January 15, and live on campus. And for everyone, the FAFSA filed by March 1 is the key that unlocks Eastern’s long list of foundation scholarships, including awards reserved for kids from specific Connecticut towns and high schools.

If your student wants small classes, professors who know them, and a strong start in business, education, psychology, or nursing without taking on private-college debt, Eastern deserves a serious look.
