We visited the University of Alabama recently, and I’ll be honest—I didn’t expect to love it as much as I did.
The campus was beautiful. The buildings looked brand new. Everything from the dorms to the Honors College setup felt like it belonged to a much more expensive school. And as we walked around, I could see it: my daughter fit there.
But then I had that quiet gut-check moment.
Can we actually afford this?
🧠 When “Stretch School” Means Something Different
At one point, I called Alabama a “stretch” school.
And my daughter looked at me and said, “What do you mean, Dad? You don’t think I can get in?”
That moment stuck with me.
Because of course she could. I never doubted her.
But what I realized was—when I said “stretch,” I wasn’t talking about her.
I was talking about our bank account.
And that’s where Alabama surprised me.
🎓 Why Alabama Might Be the Best Deal No One’s Talking About
A lot of families don’t realize this, but the University of Alabama offers some of the most generous automatic scholarships in the country—especially for out-of-state students with strong ACT scores or GPAs.
You don’t need an extra essay. You don’t need an interview.
If your kid hits the right numbers, the award is automatic.
📌 We break down every award here.
- A 30 ACT (single sitting only) and 3.5 GPA qualifies for $24,000/year automatically
- If your kid is first-gen, stack another $2,000/year
- Honors College? More awards and support open up once admitted
Important: Alabama does not superscore for scholarships.
Your kid’s qualifying ACT score must come from a single test date—not a mix of best section scores.
💡 Why It Felt Like a Private School With Public Tuition
During our visit, it became clear that Alabama is intentionally recruiting high-achieving out-of-state students. They’ve invested heavily in facilities, student life, and academic programs—especially for Honors and pre-health majors.
It felt more like a flagship private university than a big public school.
Except with one major difference:
They actually give merit aid to out-of-state kids.
🔍 What to Do If It’s On Your Kid’s List (or Should Be)
- ✅ Use the scholarship estimator tool to preview offers
- ✅ Look into the Honors College — it’s where a lot of support (and extra money) lives
- ✅ Make sure ACT scores meet cutoffs in a single sitting
- ✅ Apply early — applications open August 1
- ✅ Start on scholarships right away — some close in December

❤️ Final Thought: Don’t Let “Out-of-State” Scare You
I almost skipped the visit.
In my mind, it was already out of reach.
But seeing it in person—and then doing the scholarship math—changed everything.
Alabama isn’t perfect. It’s big, bold, and yes, football-driven. But it’s also full of opportunity for kids like mine.
It might be worth a look for yours too.
Especially if you’ve been quietly crossing it off the list without ever running the numbers.
